  • Low-value fish is the most commonly used feed in Asian fish farms despite the fact that its application is controversial in regard to the sustainability and biosecurity of aquaculture. In this study, the causal agent of a disease outbreak at a Korean rockfish Sebastes schlegeli farm was investigated to determine whether the low-value fish used at the farm was the source. Infected Korean rockfish and Pacific sand eel used as feed were sampled from the farm, and bacterial cultures recovered from the internal organs of all sampled rockfish were isolated as pure cultures and later identified as Vibrio harveyi. The causal agent of the disease was also isolated from the kidneys of some of the sampled Pacific sand eels. This study provides additional evidence that the low-value fish used as feed at fish farms can be a key source of infectious diseases.

  • To investigate changes of components in salt-fermented northern sand lance, Ammodytes personatus sauce during fermentation, various chemical properties were examined at 1$\~$3 months intervals during 18 months fermentation. The moisture content decreased slightly, but the content of VBN and crude protein, total nitrogen, amino nitrogen, degree of hydrolysis, and absorbance at 453 nm increased gradually during fermentation. On the other hand, ash content, pH, and salinity showed almost no change. The contents of total nitrogen, amino nitrogen, and degree of hydrolysis increased sharply until 6$\~$8 months fermentation and showed the gentle increment after that, The Hx and uric acid were the most abundant in ATP related compounds, ranging from $83.1\%$ to $92.9\%$, After 18 month of fermentation, sauce was rich in free amino acids, such as glutamic acid, alanine, Iysine, leucine, isoleucine, valine, aspartic acid in that order.

  • Garolim Bay is not only important fishing ground but also expected area for the tidal power plant. The construction and operation of tidal power plant will make change the ecosystem of this bay. Therefore, the actual fisheries stocks should be precisely understood for the effect estimation and overall utilization of the bay after the construction of the tidal power plant. During the study period from January through December in 1981, forty-six adult fishes species, 3 species of fish egg and 25 fishes larvae species have occurred in the bay. Considering the result on monthly distribution of eggs and larvae, the inner area of the bay seems to be important as nursing ground of larvae spawned at the outside bay in winter, e. g., Ammodytes personatus, and Enedrias sp. This inner bay is also major spawning ground for many species spawning in spring and summer, e. g., Gobiidae, Konosirus punctatus, Engraulis japonica, etc. Taking into consideration the annual mean production for three years($1978{\sim}1980$), there are two major fishing seasons. The one is in May-June for Enedrias larvae stock, and the another in October-November for big eyed herring stock. For the mariculture stocks, short necked clam, oyster and laver are important species. After construction of the tidal power plant, the migratory species, i. e., larvae of Enedrias and Ammodytes personatus, Mugil cephalus, Konosirus punctatus, etc. will be directly damaged by the interuption of migration route. On the otter hand, the change of physico-chemical factors of seawater will also affect the ecosystem of the bay. Consequently, for the overall utilization of the bay after construction, the actual ecosystem including the fisheries stocks, must bs precisely revealed, and the mechanical designs, e. g., sluice position and its demension, should be also considered with these biological characters of the bay.

  • The whole body of three species of fishes, raw anchovy (Engraulis japonica), big eyed herring (Harengula zunasi), and northern sand lance (Ammodytes personatus) catched at the south adjacent coast of Korea, were analyzed for extractive nitrogen, free amino acids, combined amino acids, ATP and its related compounds quaternary ammonium bases, and guanidino compounds using specimens collected in May and July 1991, and the composition of these nitrogenous components were compared with each other. The contents of extractive nitrogen in anchovy, big eyed herring, and northern sand lance were 633 mg, 601 mg, and 455 mg/100 g, respectively. Thirty-one or thirty-two kinds of free amino acids were found in the extracts of the three species of fishes. Histidine, taurine, alanine, leucine, carnosine, glutamic acid, and lysine were the major free amino acids in every sample. The composition of the major extractive components such as free amino acids, combined amino acids, ATP and its related compounds, TMAO, and creatine in the extracts were similar to each other, but their contents were some different individually.

  • Fisheries resources collected by set net in the Mizo fishing ground off Namhae Island were studied from March to December 2004 to determine species composition and catch variation. The water temperature of the fishing ground ranged $10.9{\sim}25.1^{\circ}C$ A total of 69,147.5 kg comprising 39 species was caught during the survey period. Most of the catch was fishes (33 species); others included cephalopods (5 species) and crustaceans (1 species). The dominant species were migratory, such as Trichiurus lepturus, Ammodytes personatus, Engraulis japonicus, and Scomberomorus niphonius, and accounted for 81.2% of the total catch. Sub-dominant species were Sardinops melanostictus, Acanthopagrus schlegeli, shrimps, and Todarodes pacificus, but they accounted for only 12.1% of the total. The catch by set net during the fishing period was much higher in spring and in autumn than in summer, relating to the recruitment of dominant species. Although the number of species had a tendency to decreased after summer, the catch in autumn was also higher than that in spring due to high temperatures (>$17^{\circ}C$ and seasonal variation of dominant species. The dominant species in spring were A. personatus and E. japonicus and in autumn were T. lepturus, S. niphonius, and E. japonicus.

  • Seasonal variation in species composition and abundance of pelagic fish in Chonsu Bay were determined by analyzing monthly samples collected using a set net from March, 1992 to January, 1993. The data in this study were compared with those of 1981$\~$82. Of 63 species identified, Engraulis japonicus, Ammodytes penonatus, Enedrias fangi and Sardinella zunasi predominated in abundance. Especially E.japonicus occupied $87\%$ of total number of individuals. In spling, fish abundance increased by recruitment of lariat E. fanti as well as adults of E. japonicus, A. personatus and S. zunasi. These adults moved towards the open sea after spawning in early summer. A large number of juveniles was then collected from August until December. The seasonal change in species composition from the present study showed a similar trend to that occurred in 1981$\~$82. However, larger number of pelagic fish was caught in 1992$\~$93 than in 1981$\~$82. This result seems to be related to the higher water temperature (>$2^{\circ}C$) than the average mean temperature in spring and autumn, implying that higher temperature provides favorable conditions for spawning and growth of the fish.

  • Sea temperature in the South Sea of Korea has been increased over the last decades. Seabirds are sensitive to changes in food availability in marine environment. In this study, we investigate the diet of Black-tailed gulls (Larus crassirostris) during the breeding season to identify changes of marine environment and biological response such as breeding performance in the South Sea of Korea. A total of 22 fish species or family (n = 128) from regurgitates by chicks were collected on Hongdo Island in 2002 and 2012. The most important prey item was Japanese anchovies (Engraulis japonicas). Proportion of Anchovy in diet increased in 2012 (70.5%) compared to 10 years ago (27.5%). Some species were newly found in 2012: Spotted chub mackerel (Scomber australasicus), Pacific sand lace (Ammodytes personatus), White ventral goby (Acanthogobius lactipes), Silver-strip round herring, Multicolorfin rainbowfish (Halichoeres poecilopterus), Silverside (Hypoatherina tsurugae), Surfperch (Neoditrema ransonneti) and Spotnape ponyfish (Leiognathus muchalis), but not in 2002. Especially, sub-tropic fish such as Kammal thryssa (Thryssa kammalensis), and Rosefish (Helicolenus hilgendorfi) were frequently observed in the diet of 2012. These results might reflect the increase of sea temperature in the South Sea of Korea.
