  • N-Methyl-p-aminophenol was polymerized by oxidative couplng in the aqueous iron chelate solution in the presence of oxygen, and black precipitate of oligo-(N-methyl-p-aminophenol) was formed quantitatively. In this oxidative polymerization reaction, methyl group attached to N in the monomer was partly eliminated, and it was clarified by the infrared spectra from the fact that the absorption of ${\delta}\;asym\;CH_3\;1460\;cm^{-1}$ and ${\delta}\;sym\;CH_3\;1380\;cm^{-1}$ in acetone insoluble fraction was much weaker than that in acetone soluble fraction. From Thermo-gravimetric analysis, oligo-(N-methyl-p-aminophenol) showed about 40% weight loss at $600^{\circ}C$ and it was less heat-resistant than oligo (p-aminophenol) that methyl group was not contained. In pyrolysis of oligo-(N-methyl-p-aminophenol) in He atmosphere, monomer N-methyl-p-aminophenol and water were formed, and in the pyrolytic gases, $H_2,\;CO,\;CO_2$ were detected by gas chromatography. From the above facts, to the structural change on oligo-(N-methyl-p-aminophenol) when it was heat-treated, it was considered that original linear structure was partly degraded, and the most of the oligomer was to go in with melt polycondensation to form polymer, and heat-resistant cyclic structure was formed at a time.

  • Polymer amines are found to show distinct corrosion inhibition effects in acidic media. The functional groups of organic compounds have a wide role in the physical and chemical properties, for the inhibition efficiency with respect to steric factors, aromaticity, and electron density. The influence of $H^+$ ions and $Cl^-$ ions on the corrosion inhibitive effect of poly(p-aminophenol) for iron in hydrochloric acid was studied using electrochemical methods such as impedance, linear polarization, and Tafel polarization techniques. The experiments were conducted with and without the inhibitor, poly(p-aminophenol). The concentration range of $H^+$ ions and $Cl^-$ ions are from 1 M to 0.05 M and 1 M to 0.1 M, respectively. With the inhibitor poly(p-aminophenol), this study shows that inhibition efficiency decreases with the reduction of $H^+$ ion and $Cl^-$ ion concentrations in aqueous solution. Further, it reveals that the adsorption of an inhibitor on the surface of iron is dependent on the concentrations of $H^+$ and $Cl^-$ ions in the solution and the adsorption of inhibitor on the iron surface through the cationic form of amine.

  • The dioxygen transfer reaction from $N^5$-ethyl-4a-hydroperoxy-3-methyllumiflavin anion (4a-FlEtOO-) has been extended to isomeric aminophenol systems (1a-4a). O-aminophenol (o-AP, 1a & 2a) and p-aminophenol(p-AP, 3a & 4a) were turned out to be good substrates, whereas m-aminophenol(m-AP, 5a) was not. This is due to the charge location which is not on the carbon bearing the amino group. o-AO's react with 4a-FlEtOO- to give isophenoxazine derivatives (6 & 7) and with p-AP's to produce p-benzoquinone derivatives (8 & 9). The partition coefficients $(k_2/k_3)$ of 1a & 2a were $4.84{\times}10^{-4}\;&\;1.66{\times}10^{-5}M$, respectively and those of methylated aminophenolates, 2a & 4a were 4-10 times greater than nonmethylated substrates, 1a & 3a.

  • This study was conducted to analyze and determine formation potentials for chlorination disinfection by-products (DBPs) from 14 synthetic nitrogen compounds with or without $Br^-$. 5 of 14 compounds were 3-aminobenzoic acid, 2-aminophenol, aniline, anthranilic acid and 4-nitroaniline that were relatively shown high for formation of THMs/DOC whether or not $Br^-$ presented. 6 compounds that were p-nitrophenol, 3-aminobenzoic acid, 2-aminophenol, aniline, anthranilic acid and 4-nitroaniline were shown high for formation of haloacetic acids (HAAs)/DOC whether or not $Br^-$ presented. Trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) was dominated in 6 compounds. The formation of haloacetonitriles (HANs)/DOC whether or not $Br^-$ presented was high in 3-aminobenzoic acid, 2-aminophenol, aniline and anthranilic acid. Specially, aniline was detected 14.6∼16.1 ${\mu}g/mg$. The formation of chloral hydrate (CH)/DOC and chloropicrin (CP)/DOC were shown high in 3-aminobenzoic acid and 2-aminophenol in 14 compounds. 6 compounds (3-aminobenzoic acid, 2-aminophenol, aniline, anthranilic acid, 4-nitroaniline, p-nitrophenol) and a commercial humic acid were tested for the formation of DBPs/DOC whether or not $Br^-$ presented. When $Br^-$ was added, the DBPs/DOC was higher for the order of aniline> anthranilic acid> 3-aminobenzoic acid> 4-nitroaniline> humic acid> p-nitrophenol> 2-aminophenol. And when $Br^-$ was not added, the DBPs/DOC was higher for the order of anthranilic acid> aniline> p-nitrophenol> humic acid> 4-nitroaniline> 3-aminobenzoic acid> 2-aminophenol.

  • The structure of 3-aminophenol $(CO_2)_1$ cluster was computationally studied both in the ground and the lowest singlet excited electronic states. The ground state structure and binding energy of the cluster was investigated using the second-order M$\ddoot{o}$ller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) at the complete basis set (CBS) limit. The excited state geometry of the cluster was obtained at the second-order approximate coupled cluster (CC2) level with cc-pVDZ basis set, and the $S_0-S_1$ absorption spectrum was simulated by calculating Franck-Condon overlap integral. The ground state geometry of the global minimum with a very high binding energy of 4.3 kcal/mol was found for the cluster, due to the interaction between amino group and $CO_2$ in addition to the strong $\pi-\pi$ interaction between the aromatic ring and $CO_2$. The excited state geometry shows a very big shift in the position of $CO_2$ compared to the ground state geometry, which results in low intensity and broad envelope in the Franck-Condon simulation.

  • When m-phenylenediamine (MPD) or m-aminophenol (MAP) was treated with formaldehyde(F), under $N_2$ stream, at the temperature $-5\sim0^{\circ}C$, addition condensation occurred and insoluble resins formed immediately. Under the same reaction conditions m-phenylenediamine, m-aminophenol and formaldehyde also easily copolycondensed and insoluble MPD-MAP-F type copolymer formed. MPD-MAP-F type copolycondensed resin was superior in both heat-resistant property and adsorptivity of Bromophenol Blue or Methylene Blue than the MPD-F and MAP-F type resins. From the result of TGA, under $N_2$stream, MPD-MAP-F resin showed about $40\%$ weight loss at $800^{\circ}C$, and this type of resin 1g adsorbed 308mg of Bromophenol Blue.

  • Fe-EDTA complex, which is easily formed when Fe salt and EDTA.2Na are mixed in the aqueous medium, is found to be a very effective catalyst in the dehydropolycondensation of aminophenols. In the dehydropolycondensation of aminophenols, the catalyst, Fe(Ⅲ)-EDTA complex (higher oxidation state) is reduced to less stable Fe(Ⅱ)-EDTA complex (lower oxidation state), and the latter is easily oxidized by air to the original higher oxidation state complex, therefore the catalytic action of Fe-EDTA complex is found to be recycled effectively. Under the catalytic action of the above mentioned complex, p-aminophenol is polymerized in the aqueous medium to form the oligomers of p-aminophenol, which the degree of polymerization to be 5 or more. The oligomers formed contain partly quinone nucleus as well as amino and hydroxyl groups. In this study, the effects of the solvents and characteristics of the oligomers are discussed. These types of polymerizations catalyzed by the metallic chelate compounds are considered to be very closely related to the reactions in the living matters.

  • Alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and partially ferrocene (Fc) modifications were applied to the Au ultramicroelectrode (UME) rather than to standard sized electrodes with dimension of millimeters. The electron transfer mediation of the SAMs and Fc modified Au UME was investigated by using a p-aminophenol (p-AP) oxidation reaction via cyclic voltammetry. The electrocatalytic p-AP oxidation at the SAMs and Fc modified Au UME showed a much larger electrocatalytic current density than that at the standard sized electrode due to the fast mass transfer rate at the UME.

  • o-Aminophenols react with alcohols in the presense of a catalytic amount of ruthenium catalyst at 180$^{\circ}C$ to give 2-substituted benzoxazole in good yield. The yields of 2-substituted benzoxazoles were affected by the yield of N-alkylation compound from o-aminophenol and alcohol as starting materials. During the reaction, a stoichiometric amount of hydrogen was spontaneously evolved into the gas phase.

  • Thermodynamic and electrical functions of aminophenol and anthranilic acid complexes with Mn(Ⅱ), Fe(Ⅱ), Co(Ⅱ), Ni(Ⅱ) and Cu(Ⅱ) were determined. ΔG°, ΔH° and ΔS° were calculated with the help of stability constant values at different temperatures. It was found that the complexing processes have an exothermic nature. The studied complexes behave like semiconductors. The conduction takes place according to hopping mechanism. To show the composition of complexes conductometric and photometric titrations, IR spectra, thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction techniques were employed.
