  • Poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene ether) (PPE) was synthesized by oxidative polymerization using various Cu(I)-amine catalyst system. The effects of catalyst/monomer ratio, different amine ligand, and the content of 2,4,6-trimethylphenol (TMP) additive on the polymer yield and molecular weight were investigated by using gel permeation chromatography. The catalytic activity of various Cu-amine systems on the 2,S-dimethylphenol (DMP) polymerization was monitored and compared each other through oxygen-uptake experiment. In addition, the effect of catalyst removal using aqueous EDTA on the thermal stability of the prepared polymer was elucidated by thermogravimetric analysis.

  • Porous organic-inorganic hybrids have been prepared from tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and organosilane precursors by sol-gel method. Two organosilanes, 3-(2,4-dinitrophenylamino)propyltriethoxysilane (DNPTES) and N-[[(2-nitrophenyl)methoxy]carbonyl]-3-triethoxysilylpropylamine (NPTES) were used to incorporate electron-accepting (di)nitrophenyl groups into the hybrids. The hybrids were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis, and their pore characteristics were studied by nitrogen sorption porosimetry. Surface area of the hybrids ranged from 563 to 770 $m^2$/g, pore volume, 0.23-0.30 $cm^3$/g, and porosity, 35-41%. It was demonstrated by UV-vis spectroscopy that aniline, ethylenediamine, and 1-aminonaphthalene could be removed from their hexane solutions in the presence of the hybrid powders. The removal of amines is attributable to donor-acceptor interaction between the electron-donating amines and electron-accepting (di)nitrophenyl moiety.

  • Due to the rapid development of the livestock industry, particularly due to residual pharmaceutical antibiotics, environmental populations have been negatively affected. Herein, we report a ZnO/melamine-functionalized carboxylic-rich graphene oxide (ZFG) photocatalyst for visible light-driven photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride in aqueous solutions. The properties of the photocatalysts were evaluated by XRD, FTIR, XPS, Fe-SEM, HR-TEM, TGA, Raman spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, zeta potential, and electrochemical measurements. The photocatalytic activity was measured using high-performance liquid chromatography. The photocatalytic properties of the ZFG photocatalyst evaluated against the tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) antibiotic under visible light irradiation showed superior photodegradation of 96.27% within 60 min at an initial pH of 11. The enhancement of photocatalytic degradation was due to the introduction of functionalized graphene, which increases the light-harvesting capability and molecular adsorption capability in addition to minimizing the recombination rate of photogenerated charge carriers due to its role as an electron acceptor and mediator.

  • The adsorption capability of cobalt phthalocyanine derivatives was investigated by means of X-ray diffractometor (XRD), FT-IR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and temperature programmed desorption (TPD). According to TPD results for ammonia, cobalt phthalocyanine derivatives showed two desorption peaks at low temperature ($100{\sim}150^{\circ}C$) and high temperature ($350{\sim}400^{\circ}C$) indicating that there were two kinds of acidities. Tetracarboxylic cobalt phthalocyanine (Co-TCPC) has a stronger desorption peak (chemical adsorption) at high temperature and a weaker desorption peak (physical adsorption) at low temperature than cobalt phthalocyanine (Co-PC). The specific surface areas of Co-TCPC and Co-PC were 37.5 and $18.4m^2/g$, respectively. The pore volumes of Co-TCPC and Co-PC were 0.17 and $0.10cm^3/g$, respectively. The adsorption capability of triethyl amine calculated by breakthrough curve at 120 ppm of equilibrium concentration was 24.3 mmol/g for Co-TCPC and 0.8 mmol/g for Co-PC. The removal efficiencies of dimethyl sulfide of Co-TCPC and Co-PC in batch experiment of 225 ppm of initial concentration were 92 and 18%, respectively. The removal efficiencies of trimethyl amine of Co-TCPC and Co-PC in batch experiment of 118 ppm of initial concentration were 100 and 17%, respectively.

  • The removal of colours from aqueous solution and/or dispersions has been studied by dispersed-air flotation, in a semi-batch column. Two colours were used for the experiments: Basic Yellow 28(basic) and Direct Orange 31(basic). All two effectively removed by flotation within 8 min. Sodium dodecyl sulfate, sodium oleate and amines were found to be effective as collectors in the removal of colour, which was found to be related to the pH of the solution and the amount of collector added to it, with high collector dosages causing the process to become pH-independent.

  • It was found that the absorbent mixed with 2-aminoethanol and others has been applied to remove them via chemical neutralization. The absorbent of natural second metabolites was achieved by a removal efficiency of 20~30% by itself depending on treatment conditions, but the complex absorbent mixed with 0.2% amine chemical provides the removal efficiency of over 98%. Optimal removal efficiencies have been examined against two major parameters of the temperature and pH to remove ammonia and hydrogen sulfide gases. The chemical analysis was also performed to analyze the composition of an essential oil by GC-MS. The monoterpenes in an essential oil reacted with odorous compounds by neutralization and their reaction mechanism was partially elucidated.

  • In this study, polysulfone-Escherichia coli biomass composite fiber (PSBF) was prepared by spinning the suspension of PS and E. coli biomass and amine-methylated PSBF (AM-PSBF) was fabricated through the methylation of amine groups in PSBF. As comparing the adsorption characteristics of basic dye, Basic Blue 3 (BB3) by the PSBF and AM-PSBF, the effect of the methylation of amine groups on BB3 adsorption was confirmed. pH edge experiments showed that the BB3 uptake of PSBF and AM-PSBF increased as pH was increased and the BB3 uptake of AM-PSBF was higher than that of PSBF at the same pH. Both of PSBF and AM-PSBF was reached at equilibrium within 5 h and kinetic experimental data were well fitted by the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. By the Langmuir model, the maximum adsorption capacities of PSBF and AM-PSBF at pH 8 were evaluated to be 28.9 and 20.7 mg/g, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of AM-PSBF was enhanced 1.4 times comparing that of PSBF. These results indicate that the methylation of amine groups in PSBF leads to the improvement of BB3 adsorption capacity. In addition, the results of desorption experiments revealed that AM-PSBF was repeatedly reusable.

  • Alginate derivatives possessing various lengths of alkyl amine (C8, C12, C16) chain were prepared by oxidation followed by reductive amination of alginate and the products were characterized by spectral analysis. The surface tension critical micelle concentration (c. m. c) and solubility of a hydrophobic compound azobenzene were examined. Series of synthesized alginate-derived polymeric surfactants(APSs) reduced the surface tension. The dissolving capacity of APSs toward azobenzene was about half that of SDS. In order to investigate the capacity of metal adsorption Co and Pb were selected as a representative metal. The overall removal efficiency of APSs were high compared with that of alginate at pH 3.5 and 7 respectively. Major mechanism of the heavy metal removal is the complex of metal with carboxyl group.
