The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of sociotropy, as perceived by college students, and ambivalence over emotional expressiveness on their interpersonal problems. A total of 248 college students (127 males and 121 females) living in Seoul and Gyonggi responded to questionnaires, which included items related to sociotropy, ambivalence over emotional expressiveness, and interpersonal problem. First, college students' sociotropy was correlated with ambivalence over emotional expressiveness and interpersonal problems. It was suggested that people with high level of sociotropy experienced more emotional expressive conflict and interpersonal problems than people with low level of sociotropy. Second, male and female college students' ambivalence over emotional expressiveness partially mediated the relation between sociotropy and move toward other people, one of the interpersonal problem's subtypes. Male college students' ambivalence over emotional expressiveness has fully mediated the relation between sociotropy and move against other people, one of the interpersonal problem's subtypes. And female college students' ambivalence over emotional expressiveness has fully mediated the relation between sociotropy and move away from other people, one of the interpersonal problem's subtypes. According to gender difference, different interpersonal problems appeared. This study's results may provide some important suggestions for interpersonal problems in college students by increasing understanding of multiple dimensions according to their internal tendency and emotional expressiveness.
This research was a comparative study of children's mothers in counseling and mothers in non-counseling (comparison) groups to examine differences between groups in emotional expressiveness, ambivalence over emotional expressiveness, type of communication and parenting behavior, Subjects were 91 mothers having counseling and 133 mothers in the non-counseling group. Data were analyzed by independent samples t-test. Results showed that mothers in the non-counseling group reported more positive emotional expressiveness than the counseling group. Mothers in the counseling group reported more ambivalence over emotional expressiveness, more negative communications and more negative parenting behavior than the comparison group.
This study was done to investigate emotional awareness, emotional expressiveness, ambivalence over emotional expressiveness, and college student adjustment, to analyze the factor affecting college student adjustment. The subjects were 159 freshman nursing students. Data were collected through structured questionnaires from May 20 to June 10, 2012. Data analysis was done using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression with SPSS WIN v 18.0. Positive correlation were found between college student adjustment and mood monitoring as well as mood labeling. On the other hand, ambivalence over positive emotional expressiveness and ambivalence over negative emotional expressiveness were significantly negative correlation with college student adjustment. In addition, mood monitoring, ambivalence over positive emotional expressiveness, mood labeling, and ambivalence over negative emotional expressiveness accounted for 31.8% of variance in college student adjustment. The results of this study suggest that programs for promoting emotional awareness and reducing ambivalence over emotional expressiveness are important for college adjustment in freshman nursing students.
The aim of this research was to verify the mediating effects of ambivalence over emotional expressiveness and distress tolerance on the relationship between harm avoidance and depression. A total of 403 university students completed TCI-RS(Temperament and Character Inventory-Revised Short version), AEQ-K(Ambivalence over Emotional Expressiveness Questionnaire-Korean), DTS (Distress Tolerance Scale) and CES-D(The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale). The results revealed that harm avoidance and ambivalence over emotional expressiveness were positively related with depression, and negatively related with distress tolerance. In addition, the relationship of harm avoidance and depression was successively mediated by ambivalence over emotional expressiveness and distress tolerance. That is, the motivation of emotional expression conflict may have an effect on depression and the distress tolerance would play an important role in therapeutic intervention of depression.
Background: The purpose of this study was to explore the mediating effect of ambivalence over emotional expressiveness on the relationship between covert narcissistic tendency of adults in their twenties and the satisfaction of interpersonal relations. Methods: 194 male and female adults in their twenties completed the self-report questionnaires on covert narcissism, ambivalence over emotional expressiveness, and interpersonal satisfaction. A mediated model was tested using the SPSS Macro by Hayes. Results: We verified that the ambivalence over emotional expressiveness played a mediating role in the relationship between covert narcissistic tendency and interpersonal satisfaction. In terms of the characteristics of relationship, except for the superior person, the relationship between lover/spouse and friends/colleagues showed the mediating effect between covert narcissism and interpersonal satisfaction. Conclusions: The covert narcissistic tendency itself affects low interpersonal satisfaction, but the ambivalence over emotional expressiveness affects low interpersonal satisfaction when the covert narcissist interacts with lover/spouse, friends/colleagues. We discussed the directions of intervention for the covert narcissist having low satisfaction in relationships, limitations and future suggestions of this research.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between behavioral inhibition, ambivalence over emotional expressiveness and social anxiety among Korean middle school students. In addition, we examined whether ambivalence over emotional expressiveness mediated the relationship between behavioral inhibition and social anxiety. For this aim, we conducted a survey of 357 first-third grade students from 6 middle schools located in the cities of Wonju, Seoul, Suwon, Suncheon, and Kwangju. Survey data was analyzed through descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, and Sobel test using the SPSS/WIN 19.0 program. Results were as follows: First, there was a positive correlation between behavioral inhibition and social anxiety on ambivalence over emotional expressiveness. Second, ambivalence over emotional expressiveness was found to partially mediate the relationships between behavioral inhibition and interpersonal anxiety as well as performance anxiety. In other words, while behavioral inhibition tends to affect interpersonal anxiety and performance anxiety in a very direct way, it also influences them indirectly by increasing the ambivalence over emotional expressiveness. These results suggest that counseling of middle school students with social anxiety due to innate behavioral inhibition should seek to reduce their social anxiety by decreasing their ambivalence over emotional expressiveness.

Purpose: This study was conducted to identify influence of emotional awareness, ambivalence over emotional expressiveness and emotional regulation style on nursing student adjustment. Method: One hundred and sixty nine nursing students completed the questionnaires from May to June, 2013. Data analysis was done using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression with SAS v 9.3. Results: Ambivalence over positive emotional expressiveness, motivation of application for nursing-aptitude, emotional awareness-mood labeling, avoidant/distractive style of emotion regulation, and parents-both alive were identified as factors influencing nursing student adjustment. The model explained 37% of variance in nursing student adjustment. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that programs for promoting mood labeling and reducing ambivalence over positive emotional expressiveness and avoidant/distractive style of emotion regulation are important for college adjustment in nursing students. In addition, aptitude test for nursing applicants can be considered.

To this end, we conducted a survey of 343 university students living in central area of Korea, a measure of CNS, BDI, TMMS, AEQ-K. The result of the study were as follows. First, all the variables had meaningful positive of negative correlations. Secondly, When Covert Narcissism affects Depression, Emotional Clarity and Ambivalence over emotional expressiveness were full mediated. Third, the indirect effects of Emotional Clarity, Ambivalence over Emotional Expressiveness on the effects of covert narcissism on depression were relevance. Finally, the implications and limitations of the study were discussed.
This study explored the effects of maternal ambivalence over emotional expressiveness (AEE) and mother-adolescent communication on adolescent depression (depressed affect, positive affect, somatic symptoms and activity inhibition, interpersonal difficulties). Data were taken from 233 middle school students (128 boys, 105 girls) and their mothers. Regression analyses showed varying gender differences in the relationships among these variables. Boys with high maternal AEE had lower positive affect, and higher depressive affect, somatic symptoms and activity inhibition, and interpersonal difficulties, whereas girls' moods were not influenced by maternal AEE. In addition, boys with problems in mother-dolescent communication exhibited lower positive affect, higher depressed affect and interpersonal difficulties, but open communication was not related to any depressive symptoms. The mother-adolescent communication type did not appear to be associated with depression in girls either. Both boys and girls both had less open communication and more problem communication with mothers experiencing high AEE. Problem communication with mothers partially mediated the relationship between maternal AEE and interpersonal difficulties in boys only. Examination of maternal ambivalence over emotional expressiveness provides a deeper context for our understanding of negative family communication patterns and the psychological consequences, especially in mother-adolescent boy dyads.
The current study was conducted to examine the dual mediating effect of dysfunctional belief and ambivalence over emotional expressiveness in the relationship between the parents' psychological control scale perceived by university students and interpersonal problems. For that purpose, 305 4-year university students in G Metropolitan City and J Province were surveyed to rate the parents' psychological control scale, dysfunctional belief, ambivalence over emotional expressiveness, and interpersonal problems. The data were analyzed using SPSS 22.0 and SPSS Macro. As a result, it was found that dysfunctional belief and ambivalence over emotional expressiveness had a mediating effect in the relationship between the parents' psychological control scale and interpersonal problems. Also, dysfunctional belief and ambivalence over emotional expressiveness had a dual mediating effect on the relationship between psychological control scale and interpersonal problems. As a result of testing the significance of the mediating effect through Bootstrapping, dysfunctional belief and ambivalence over emotional expressiveness had a significant dual mediating effect. The purpose of the current study was to establish a useful theoretical foundation for counseling strategies to efficiently help through counseling the university students who are having difficulties with interpersonal relations due to parental control.
