The negative sentence may have an ambiguity depending on which constituent of the sentence is negated. In case of sentence final adverbials, whether they are included in the scope of negation generates the semantic ambiguity. Since sentences with ambiguous meanings have the same word order, the differences of the meanings in different contexts should be manifested with intonational cues. This article represents how intonation contributes to the disambiguation in negative sentences with ambiguity and which phonological/phonetic cues are specifically used in the course of the disambiguation.

This study investigates the improvement in the theoretical success rate of the integer ambiguity resolution in GPS/GNSS carrier-phase positioning by using many visible satellites. It estimates the dependence of the rate on the baseline length in relative positioning under the condition of the use of double/triple-frequency navigation signals. The calculation results show that the use of 14 navigation satellites (i.e., seven GPS and seven Galileo ones) remarkably improves the success rate under the condition of very short baseline length, compared with the use of seven GPS ones. The numerical reliability of the calculated success rates is strictly tested by examining the tightness of the union and minimum-distance bounds to the rate. These bounds are also shown to be effective to investigate the realization of the high success rates.

Coordination in natural language is often syntactically explained by the rule schema X \longrightarrow X′ and X", where X′ and X" refer to expressions of a like syntactic type. While this schema does explain a lot of instances of coordination, it is well known that this schema also gives rise to serious structural ambiguity, leading not only to numerous unintended interpretations but also to a high degree of unnecessary computational complexity. In order to identify intended interpretations, we need to take into account a number of clues at all the levels of morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics/discourse. In this paper, we propose, with an accompanying data analysis, principles of symmetry and coherency for an effective and reasonable identification of intended interpretations from coordination-bearing sentences.

This paper describes a design of simple and precision direction finder that can be adapted to shipboard or mobile vehicles used for Electronic support measure, ELINT and radio signal monitoring systems. The direction finding technology has improved with monolithic integrated circuit, linear array antennas, and interferometer. Interferometer uses the phase-comparison principle and has a good direction finding accuracy but it has an ambiguity problem. We suggest a simple ambiguity solver using phase-comparison technology with amplitude-comparison principle. The direction finding device that has been designed by the suggested method has 0.7 degree RMS error in azimuth angle and 0.6 degree RMS error in elevation angle in 0.5 - 2.0 GHz.

Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) based precise positioning using Real Time Kinematic (RTK) technique has been proposed as an enabler of the formation operation of moving vehicles. In RTK methods, the integer ambiguity of GNSS carrier phase measurements must be resolved. Although there have been many proposed algorithms for the integer ambiguity resolution, the widelane combination of carrier phase measurements and LAMBDA methods have gained the most popularity in literatures when dual frequency GNSS measurements were used. In this paper, we evaluated five alternative methods to determine relative positions of moving base and rover receivers; the round-off scheme of widelane carrier phase, instant least-squares and Kalman filter-based LAMBDA with widelane carrier phase, instant least-squares and Kalman filter-based LAMBDA with dual frequency measurements. The paper presented the performance of each method using flight test data, which showed their strength and weakness in the aspects of time-to-first-fix, ambiguity resolution success ratio, and relative position errors. Based on that, we provided practical recommendations of RTK operations for moving vehicles.

Recently in the health service the globalization and opening their market to foreigners are realized in Korea. So, it becomes necessary for the health service institutes to execute their management to focus on service quality to satisfy their customers. We examined the customer orientation of the individual health professional rather than the market orientation concept based on the health institute. For the market orientation of the health institute should require the individual health professional worked there. The hypotheses for the effect of the role conflict, ambiguity, and job satisfaction of the health professionals to their customer orientation were established based on the literature review and previous researches and tested to the 250 health professionals such as health technician, nurse, radiologist, and management clerk in D hospital located in Busan, in summer 2008. First, the hypothesis 'The role conflict between the individual health professionals might effect to the customer orientation' was rejected. Second, the hypothesis 'The role ambiguity of the individual health professional might effect to the customer orientation' was accepted. Third, the hypothesis 'The satisfaction of the individual health professional might effect to the customer orientation' was rejected. and the multiple regression analysis was taken with the dependent variables as each construct of customer orientation-responsiveness, empathy, tangibility, and reliability, and independent variables as role conflict, role ambiguity, and job satisfaction. With these analysis, we found also the role ambiguity effected to the customer orientation.

Objectives : This study aimed to examine the mediating effect of sleep quality and interpretation bias for ambiguity in the relationship between hopelessness and suicidal ideation in psychiatric patients. Methods : A total of 231 psychiatric outpatients and inpatients completed the Beck Hopelessness Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Ambiguous/Unambiguous Situations Diary-Extended Version, and Ultra-Short Suicidal Ideation Scale. Data analysis was conducted using regression analyses and bootstrap sampling. Results : The results of this study showed that hopelessness had a direct effect on suicidal ideation, and that sleep quality and interpretation bias for ambiguity mediated the association between hopelessness and suicidal ideation. Moreover, there was a significant double mediating effect of sleep quality and interpretation bias for ambiguity on the relationship between hopelessness and suicidal ideation. Conclusions : These results suggest that it is important to consider both sleep quality and interpretation bias for ambiguity to prevent hopelessness from leading to suicidal idea. These results suggest that considering both sleep quality and interpretation bias for ambiguity may be important in preventing hopelessness from leading to suicidal ideation.

In this paper I review previous analyses of specific indefinites, and propose a new analysis. The main claim is that a specific indefinite presupposes that an agent, a speaker in general, has in mind an individual which satisfies the descriptive content. I provide evidence for the ambiguity view of specificity. First, I show that a specific indefinite triggers a pre- supposition. Second, I show that a specific indefinite is a strong quantifier while a nonspecific is a weak one. Finally, I discuss different behaviors of specific and nonspecific indefinites in anaphora.

A new method for Chinese word segmentation named Conditional F'||'&'||'BMM (Forward and Backward Maximal Matching) which incorporates both bigram statistics (ie., mutual infonllation and difference of t-test between Chinese characters) and linguistic rules for ambiguity resolution is proposed in this paper The key characteristics of this model are the use of: (i) statistics which can be automatically derived from any raw corpus, (ii) a rule base for disambiguation with consistency and controlled size to be built up in a systematic way.

This paper examines some syntactic and semantic properties of the negative construction V+bo NP (VbN) in Taiwanese Southern Min (TSM). It finds out that there are ambiguities between an episode reading and a generic reading in VbN construction which require further investigations and explanations. Therefore, the goal of this paper is to account for the ambiguities lying in the negative VbN construction.
