The study investigated antioxidative properties and rectal cancer cell inhibition effect of amaranth (Amaranthus cruentus L.) cauline leaves (ACL) to produce the sausage with ACL powder (ACLP). Antioxidative effects of ACLP prepared with different stem lengths (10-45 cm) were evaluated through DPPH, ABTS, reducing power, total phenol, and total flavonoid. Inhibition effect on rectal cancer cells growth was also examined with CT-26 cell. To determine appropriate ACL amounts in sausage formula, response surface methodology was used. The sausages without ACL (control) and the sausage with ACL (ACLP sausage) were the subjected to the examinations of antioxidation, growth inhibition on CT-26, and physicochemical properties (pH and water content). ACLP made from the leaf with 15 cm length stem generally showed the highest antioxidative effect through results of DPPH, ABTS, reducing power, total phenol, and total flavonoid. ACLP also showed inhibition effect on the proliferation of CT-26, depending on concentration of ACLP. The surface response model showed that 4.87 g of ACLP was optimized amount for sausage production. Physicochemical properties between optimized ACLP and control sausages were not significantly different. Higher antioxidative effect of optimized ACLP sausage extract was observed (p<0.05) in antioxidation tests than control sausage extract except for DPPH. Cell viability of CT-26 cells were higher (p<0.05) in ACLP than in control sausage extracts. These results indicate that ACLP has functional effects on antioxidation activity and growth inhibition on CT-26 cell, and thus, it should be useful as a supplement in sausage, which may some effect as ACLP itself.

The occurrence of exotic weeds and their influx into farmlands due to climate change poses many problems. Therefore, it is necessary to generate a prediction model for the occurrence pattern of these exotic weeds based on scientific evidence and devise prevention measures. The photosynthetic apparatus is known as the most temperature-sensitive component of a plant cell and its initial response to temperature stress is to inhibit the activation of photosystem II. This study investigated the potential of OJIP transients in assessing temperature stress in exotic weeds. The four exotic weeds currently flowing into Korean farmlands include Amaranthus spinosus, Conyza bonariensis, Crassocephalum crepidioides, and Amaranthus viridis. These weeds were treated at 5℃, 10℃, 15℃, 20℃, 25℃, 30℃, 35℃, and 40℃ and the OJIP curves and JIP parameters were measured and analyzed. The results showed that heat and chilling stress affected the photosystem II(PSII) electron transport of A. spinosus, whereas C. crepidioides and A. viridis were more affected by high-temperature stress than by low-temperature stress. Lastly, C. bonariensis showed resistance to both high and low-temperature stress. The results of this study suggest that OJIP transients and JIP parameters can be used to analyze damage to the photosynthetic apparatus by temperature stress and that they can serve as sensitive indicators for the occurrence pattern of exotic weeds.
Cultural practices for adzuki bean and the distribution of weed species in the south-west regions of Korea were surveyed to provide information on effective weed management. Approximately 27.5% of the farm households were growing adzuki bean in an area larger than 1 ha while the rest grew the crop in an area smaller than 1 ha. Of all adzuki bean growers, 17.1% seeded in early June, 8.6% in mid June, 34.3% in late June, 17.1% in early July, 20.0% in mid July, and 2.9% in late July. The average planting distance was $71.0{\times}29.5cm$. From the 40 surveys in adzuki bean fields, 35 weed species in 17 families were identified. According to the occurrence frequency, the dominant weed species were Digitaria sanguinalis, Acalypha australis, Cyperus amuricus, Echinochloa crus-galli, and Amaranthus nangostanus in decreasing order of dominance. However, based on dry weight, Chenopodium album (34.4%) was the most dominant followed by Acalypha australis (21.9%), Amaranthus nangostanus (19.1%), Digitaria sanguinalis (7.5%), and Portulaca oleracea (6.1%). The exotic weeds found in the field of adzuki were Ipomoea hederacea, Abutilon avicennae, and Celosia argentea. The plant heights of I. hederacea, A. avicennae, and C. argentea were 259 cm, 98 cm, and 76 cm, respectively, while the fresh weights were 850 g, 66 g, and 101 g, respectively. Integrated weed management systems utilizing mechanical, chemical, and biological control techniques need to be developed for effective weed management in adzuki bean production.
Althought allelopathy has been cleary established for Pinus densiflora by Lee-Monsi, the auther suspected that Miscanthus sinensis which grows vigrously in such Korean pine forests might also exhibit the phenomenon. A total of 33 species having an affinity in the Miscanthus group were recorded in the filed. Out of these, five species; Patrinia scabiosaefolia, Lespedeza crytobotrya. Oenothera odorata, Raphanus sativus var. acanthiformis, and Zoysia japonica were considered the "A" group. Five other species which have no affinity to Misanthus sinensis, Amaranthus patulus, Solanum nigrum, Capsella bursa-pastoris var. triangularis, Chemopodium album var. centrorubrum and Alopeculus amurensis were considered the "B" group. Extracts of Miscanthus sinensis were applied to determine relative germination and growth. It was found the growth in the "B" group was promoted by a cold water extract of Miscanthus stems and leaves, but inhibited remarkably by an extract obtained by passing cold water through Miscanthus root. As expected, growth in the "A" group was promoted by both experimental treatments.romoted by both experimental treatments.

The Plant growth Promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), Pseudomonas sp. (A3) and Bacillus sp. (AT33) were isolated from the rhizosphere of Amaranthus blitum collected from soil contaminated with chromium. Both bacterial strains quantitatively reduced hexavalent chromium to trivalent chromium. Pseudomonas sp. broughter greater conversion of Cr6+ in the medium (100%) as compared to Bacillus sp.(62%). Phaseolus mungo seeds inoculated with Pseudomonas sp. or Bacillus sp. were grown under different concentration of chromium. The monitored parameters included elongation of shoot and root, fresh weight, dry weight and concentration of chromium in the shoot and root systems. As compared to non inoculated seedlings those inoculated with A3 and AT33 exhibited better growth.
Aqueous and dichloromethane (DCM) extracts of leaves, root bark and inflorescences of Parthenium hysterophorus L. at various concentrations were used to quantify its allelopathic potential against Indigofera tinctoria, Amaranthus viridis, A. gangeticus, Phaseolus mungo (cv. CO 1), Sorghum vulgare (cv. SPT- 462). Pennisetum typhoideus (cv. WCC-75) and Eleusine corocana (cv. CO 1). The aqueous extracts were more inhibitory than the DCM extracts to the germination and seedling growth of the plants studied. The relative rate of inhibition increased in the order of inflorescences. leaves and root bark in the aqueous extracts. whereas DCM root bark and inflorescences extracts were promoted at lower concentrations.

Ethanolic extracts of different parts of 10 local traditional vegetables (ulam) (Amaranthus gangeticus, Jussiaea linifolia, Eugenia polyantha, Trapa incisa, Trichosanthes anquina, Mangifera indica, Pachyrrhirus erosus, Barringtonia mcarostachya, Carica papaya, and Coleus tuberosus) were screened for in vitro antitumor promoting activity using the inhibition test of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) activation in Raji cells induced by phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate and sodium-n-butyrate. All the extracts were found to have strong inhibition activity toward EBV-activation, except for leaf extract of T. anquina. The extracts were non-cytotoxic to the Raji cells except for the extracts of A. gangeticus (leaves), B. macrostachya (leaves), E. polyantha (young leaves), and J. linifolia (leaves) where the viability of the cells were decreased significantly.
