  • Due to new requirements of the automotive industry, concerning lightweight and non-corroding construction, new production methods, The Hot Air Forming process of aluminum alloys are of special interest. The disadvantage of aluminum alloy is the poorer formability compared to steel. The Hot Air Forming process is one of the forming process receiving recent attention. In the current study, Fabrication of aluminum rear subframe has been attempted using seam and seamless aluminum tubes. On the base of hot workability of the extruded tube and PAM-STAMP simulation results, Optimum condition for fabricating aluminum rear sub(lame parts by Hot Air Forming could be determined.

  • Compared with the hydroforming technology for steel, the hydroforming technology for aluminum has not been actively investigated. Recently, the hydroforming of high strength aluminum tubes has attracted great interest because of its good strength to weight ratio. In this study, front side member (FSM) is fabricated with the hydroforming of aluminum tube and the mechanical properties and dimensional accuracy of the hydroformed FSM is investigated. For hydroforming process, extruded aluminum tubes with ribs to improve the structural rigidity are used. To ensure the mechanical properties, the aluminum tubes are T6 heat-treated before hydroforming.

  • The terrorist attacks and dangers by bomb blast have turned into an emerging issue throughout the world and the protection of the people and structures against terrorist acts depends on the prediction of the response of structures under blast and shock load. In this paper, behavior of aluminum and unidirectionally reinforced E-Glass Epoxy composite plates with and without focal circular holes subjected to shock loading has been identified. For isotropic and orthotropic plates (with and without holes) the classical normal mode approach has been utilized as a part of the processing of theoretical results. To obtain the accurate results, convergence of the results was considered and a number of modes were selected for plate with and without hole individually. Using a shock tube as a loading device, tests have been conducted to composite plates to verify the theoretical results. Moreover, peak dynamic strains, investigated by experiments are also compared with the theoretical values and deviation of the results are discussed accordingly. The strain-time histories are likewise indicated for a specific gauge area for aluminum and composite plates. Comparison of dynamic-amplification factors between the isotropic and the orthotropic plates with and without hole has been discussed.

  • Process design has been performed for the warm hydroforming of light weight alloy tubes. For the heating of tubes, specially designed induction heating system has been adopted to ensure rapid heating of tubes. The induction heating system uses 30kHz frequency induction coil in order to concentrate the energy in the tube and prevent the energy loss. But the induced heat by the integrated heating system, consisting of induction coil, tube, pressure oil and dies, was normally not equally distributed over the length and circumference of the tube specimen, and consequent temperature distribution was non-uniform. So additional heating element has been inserted into the inside of the tube to maintain the forming temperature and reduce temperature drop due to heat loss to the molds. And for that heat loss, a heat insulation system has also been installed. The drop in flow stress at elevated temperatures results in lower internal pressure for hydroforming and lower clamping forces. The proposed warm hydroforming process has been successfully implemented when applying 6061 aluminum extruded tubes.

  • In this study, the collapse characteristic of CFRP/Al compound square tube was investigated experimentally. The conclusions are as follows; The impact collapse characteristic of CFRP/Al compound square tube was found to be the most superior stacking conditions $[90^{\circ}]_8$. It showed that a very stable collapse mode was crushing. In the member with $[0_2{^{\circ}}/90_2{^{\circ}}]_s$ and $[90_2{^{\circ}}/0_2{^{\circ}}]_s$, stacking conditions, $0^{\circ}$ fibers were splayed to the external by laminar bending, while the $90^{\circ}$ fibers were held between the folds of the aluminum member by laminar bending, local buckling and transverse crack. In the member with $[45_2{^{\circ}}/45_2{^{\circ}}]_s$ stacking conditions, fibers were held between the folds of the aluminum member by local buckling and transverse crack.

Experimental Investigation on Flow Boiling of R-22 in a Alumium Extruded Tube (알루미늄 다채널 압출관 내 R-22 대류 비등에 관한 실험 연구)

  • Convective boiling heat transfer coefficients of R-22 were obtained in a flat extruded aluminum tube with $D_h=1.41mm$ . The test range covered mass flux from 200 to 600 $kg/m^2s$, heat flux from 5 to 15 $kW/m^2$ and saturation temperature from $5^{\circ}C$ to $15^{\circ}C$ . The heat transfer coefficient curve shows a decreasing trend after a certain quality(critical quality). The critical quality decreases as the heat flux increases, and as the mass flux decreases. The early dryout at a high heat flux results in a unique 'cross-over' of the heat transfer coefficient curves. The heat transfer coefficient increases as the mass flux increases. At a low quality region, however, the effect of mass flux is not prominent. The heat transfer coefficient increases as the saturation temperature increases. The effect of saturation temperature, however, diminishes as the heat flux decreases. Both the Shah and the Kandlikar correlations underpredict the low mass flux and overpredict the high mass flux data.

Galvanic Corrosion Between Component Parts of Aluminum Alloys for Heat Exchanger of Automobile

  • There are a variety of heat exchangers used in automobiles, such as shell and tube heat exchangers, double tube heat exchangers, and plate heat exchangers. Most of them are water-cooled to prevent engine overheating. There have been reports of corrosion damage to these heat exchangers due to continuous wetting caused by external temperature differences, road pollutants, and snow removal. In addition, galvanic corrosion, which occurs when two dissimilar materials come into contact, has been identified as a major cause. In this study, corrosion characteristics and galvanic corrosion behavior of Al alloy (AA3003, AA4045 and AA7072) used in automobile heat exchangers were analyzed. Effective clad materials for heat exchanger tubes and fins were also evaluated. It was found that AA7072 should be applied as the cladding material for fin AA3003 and that AA4045 was suitable as a cladding material for tube AA3003 because this clad materials application was the most effective clad design to delay the occurrence of pinhole in the tube. Main factors influencing galvanic corrosion dissolution were found to be galvanic corrosion potential difference and galvanic corrosion current density.

  • 냉방기기의 고성능소형화를 촉진시키기 위해서는 고강도 고열전도성 알루미늄합금소재의 개발이 시급하다. Condenser용 튜브부품은 향후 더욱 소형화, 경량화 하는 방향으로 전개되며, 결국 목표로 하는 컨덴서용 튜브 소재적인 측면에서의 기능은 고강도, 고열전도, 압출성이 우수하여야 한다.
