Optimal design of a lightweight composite sandwich plate used for airplane containers

  • Composite material-due to low density-causes weight savings, which results in lower fuel consumption of transport vehicles. The aim of the research was to change the existing base-plate of the aluminum airplane container with the composite sandwich plate in order to reduce the weight of the containers of cargo aircrafts. The newly constructed sandwich plate consists of aluminum honeycomb core and composite face-sheets. The face-sheets consist of glass or carbon or hybrid fiber layers. The orientations of the fibers in the face-sheets were 0°, 90° and ±45°. Multi-objective optimization method was elaborated for the newly constructed sandwich plates. Based on the design aim, the importance of the objective functions (weight and cost of sandwich plates) was the same (50%). During the optimization nine design constraints were considered: stiffness, deflection, facing stress, core shear stress, skin stress, plate buckling, shear crimping, skin wrinkling, intracell buckling. The design variables were core thickness and number of layers of the face-sheets. During the optimization both the Weighted Normalized Method of the Excel Solver and the Genetic Algorithm Solver of Matlab software were applied. The mechanical properties of composite face-sheets were calculated by Laminator software according to the Classical Lamination Plate Theory and Tsai-Hill failure criteria. The main added-value of the study is that the multi-objective optimization method was elaborated for the newly constructed sandwich structures. It was confirmed that the optimal new composite sandwich construction-due to weight savings and lower fuel consumption of cargo aircrafts - is more advantageous than conventional all-aluminum container.

  • 알루미늄 재질의 도시철도차량 차체의 경량화를 위해 이중 판재구조로 이루어진 철도차량용 알루미늄 압출재의 최적설계를 수행하였다. 위상최적설계 기법을 이용하여 알루미늄 차체에서 가장 큰 중량을 차지하는 하부 프레임 베이스 플레이트의 경량화된 위상을 도출하였고, 이를 기반으로 압출재 부재별 치수 최적화를 수행하였다. 하부 프레임 다음으로 큰 중량을 차지하는 측면 프레임 압출재에 대해서는 치수 최적화를 통하여 경량설계를 수행하였다. 최적설계안과 현재 설계의 최대발생응력과 최대 변형량을 비교하여 최적설계결과의 타당성을 검증하였다. 이 과정을 통하여 언더프레임과 사이드프레임의 중량을 현재보다 평균 12% 줄일 수 있었고, 차체 전체로는 8.5%의 경량화 효과를 얻었다.

  • A hybrid composite (APAL;Aramid Patched ALuminum alloy, CPAL;Carbon Patched ALluminum alloy), consisting of a Al 2024-T3 aluminum alloy plate sandwiched between two aramid/epoxy and carbon/epoxy laminate, was developed. Fatigue crack growth behavior was examined at stress ratios of R=0.2, 0.5. The APAL and CPAL showed superior fatigue crack growth resistance, which may be attributed to the crack bridging effect imposed by the intact fibers in the crack wake.

  • A hybrid composite APAL(Aramid Patched Aluminum alloy) , consisting of Al 2024-T3 aluminum alloy plate sandwiched between two aramid/epoxy laminates, was developed. The characteristics of tensile s trength were investigated and statistical properties of tensile strength were studied in terms of Weibull distribution probability with number of AFRP laminates. The tensile strength of APAL was inproportional to number of AFRP laminates and followed the two-parametic Weibull distribution.

  • This study investigates the effect of surface treatment on the shear strength between aluminum panel and composite plate. The aluminum panel was surface-treated by DC Plasma and the composite Plate was surface-treated by ion beam. Lap shear test and T-peel test were performed to determine the shear strength and T-peel strength. Results showed that the shear strength of surface-treated case was 2.5 times higher than that of untreated case. The T-peel strength of treated case was more than 5 times higher than that of untreated case. SEM examination showed that the strength increase of surface-treated case was due to the more spread of epoxy to the panel.

열전도성 플라스틱 평판에서의 착상거동 (Frosting Behavior on the Plate of Thermally Conductive Plastic)

  • An experimental study has been carried out to investigate the frosting behavior on the plate of thermally conductive plastic (PBT based resin) by comparing it with those of aluminum and some plastic test specimens (PTFE based resin). It is found that the frosting behavior of plastic specimens with 1 mm thickness shows similar trend to that of aluminum except PTFE. The properties of frost formed on the specimens are found to be affected by both thermal conductivity and surface characteristics of the materials. The results indicate that the heat and mass transfer rates of PBT resin are almost equivalent to those of aluminum.

  • 균일한 열유속을 갖는 가열된 평판에 부착된 발포 알루미늄에 대한 충돌제트의 열유동 특성에 대한 실험적 연구가 수행되었다. 열전달 특성에 대한 기공도, 다공성 물질의 두께, Reynolds 수의 영향이 고찰되었다. 실험결과 가열평판에 부착된 발포 알루미늄에 의해 열전달의 증가를 얻을 수 있었고 다공성 물질의 삽입에 의한 열전달 증가는 열전달 표면적의 증가와 압력 손실에 의한 운동량 감소에 의해 영향을 받는 것을 확인하였다.

  • This paper presents an experimental study on vibration characteristics of an automotive roof with viscoelastic material. The goal of the study is to extract modal parameters (natural frequency, loss factor, and mode shape) of automotive roof with unconstrained and constrained layer damping treatment. To determine the effective position of the viscoelastic patch on a roof, vibration tests have been carried out for two cases; Aluminum plate with viscoelastic patch on maximum strain energy, and aluminum plate with viscoelastic patch on nodal line. From the result of aluminum plate, it is found that the viscoelastic patch should be attached on the Place with maximum strain energy Part. For the automotive root five Patches of unconstrained or constrained viscoelastic material have been attached on the position of maximum strain energy. This paper addresses that the proper position of viscoelastic patch is very important and the concept of maximum strain energy may be a good criterion f3r the placement of viscoelastic patch.

자동차 루프의 진동제어를 위한 제진재의 위치 및 두께에 대한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on Placements and Thickness of Damping Material for Vibration Control of Automotive Roof)

  • This paper presents an experimental study on vibration characteristics of an automotive roof with damping material. The goal of the study is to extract modal parameters(natural frequency, loss factor, and mode shape) of automotive roof with damping materials treatment. To determine the effective positions and thickness of the damping material on a roof, vibration tests have been carried out for six cases; an aluminum plate with damping material on maximum strain energy positions, and an aluminum plate with damping material on nodal lines. From the result of aluminum plate, it is found that the damping material should be placed on the location with maximum strain energy part. For the automotive roof, patches of constrained damping material, which has two different density, have been attached to the positions of the maximum strain energy with four kinds of thicknesses. This paper shows that the proper positioning of the damping material is very important and the effective thickness is about twice that of the roof panel.

전자장비 안전설계를 위한 PCB의 설계단계별 열전달 해석 (Numerical Analysis of Heat Transfer of a Printed Circuit Boards for Safety Design of Electronic Equipment at Each Design Stage)

  • The natural convection cooling of simulated electronic chips located on a printed circuit board(PCB) has been studied by Computer Aided Engineering(CAE). In CAE, 3-dimensional finite element model of simulated electronic chip was made to accomplish heat transfer analysis at each design stage of a printed circuit boards for thermal optimization. The simulated electronic chips are installed protrudent from the plate about 3mm. The materials the plates are epoxy and aluminum. The results show that the chip with relatively high heat generation rates should not be close to each other. It is found, as well that cooling effect for the aluminum plate is superior to the epoxy plate and location of maximum temperature is significantly influenced by the structure variation of PCB. In developing PCB and electronic chips, it's recommended that CAE is very useful to estimate to the distribution of temperature.
