Rheological, colloidal and micromeritical properties were followed to investigate aging mechanisms of hydrous aluminum oxide suspension using Zeta-meter systems, BET adsorption apparatus, Master sizer and electronmicroscope. The results indicate that hydrous aluminum oxide suspension revealed plastic flow with thixotropy. The viscosity, thixotropy and yield value were increased with increasing concentration. During aging process, the viscosity and thixotropic index were increased by an addition of glycerin, however, sorbitol stabilized aging process of the suspension being accompanied with growth of particle size and reduction in specific surface area, pore area and pore volume, and consistency. Diminution of adsorptive power of the particles was also protected by addition of sorbitol to hydrous aluminum oxide suspension. From these results, one of aging mechanism of hydrous aluminum oxide suspension assumed growth and/or crystallization of colloidal particles in aqueous suspension.
Zirconia powder coated with alumina was prepared by hydrolysis of alumina butoxide. The coated powder was obtained by a hydrolysis reaction between the adsorbed water on the surface of zirconia particles and aluminum sec-butoxide. Amorphous aluminum hydroxide was uniformly coated on the surface of zirconia particles with the thickness of about 30 nm. The shape and distribution of aluminum hydroxide was varied with an existence of surfactant. The coated layer of aluminum hydroxide consists of the fine particle size, and the zirconia powder coated by alumina hydroxide have the large specific surface area of 120 $m^2$/g, compared with that of starting zirconia powder.
High purity(99.99%) spherical particles of hydrated Basic Aluminum Salts(BAS) were prepared by a homogeneous precipitation process utilizing the urea decomposition reaction and characterized by XRD, SEM, TG-DTA, IR and PSA methods. Amorphous hydrated BAS was precipitated in the range of pH 4~6. The molar ratio [Al3+]/[SO42-] for the precipitate particles was about 3.7. With increasing the concentration of aluminum sulfate the precipitation of the hydrated BAS occurred slowly and the precipitate particles with a narrow size distribution were fine(1-2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in diameter). At temperatures in the range 400$^{\circ}$to 95$0^{\circ}C$, desulfurization and dehydroxylization resulted in weight loss with 22%. When the precipitate particles were thermally treated, the crystlline ${\gamma}$-Al2O3 was identifited by XRD at 50$0^{\circ}C$ and ${\gamma}$-Al2O3 particles were transformed into $\alpha$-Al2O3 at 100$0^{\circ}C$. A vermicular network was produced by calcining at 125$0^{\circ}C$ for 30min.
Reinforced aluminum alloy base composites have become increasingly popular for engineering applications, since they usually possess several desirable properties. Recently, Warm Accumulative Roll Bonding (WARB) process has been used as a new novel process to fabricate particle reinforced metal matrix composites. In the present study, TiO2 particles are used as reinforcement in aluminum metal matrix composites fabricated through warm accumulative roll bonding process. Firstly, the raw aluminum alloy 1060 strips with TiO2 as reinforcement particle were roll bonded to four accumulative rolling cycles by preheating for 5 min at 300℃before each cycle. The mechanical and bonding properties of composites have been studied versus different volume contents of TiO2 particles by tensile test, peeling test and vickers micro-hardness test. Moreover, the fracture surface and peeling surface of samples after the tensile test and peeling test have been studied versus different amount of TiO2 volume contents by scanning electron microscopy. The results indicated that the strength and the average vickers micro-hardness of composites improved by increasing the volume content of TiO2 particles and the amount of their elongation and bonding strength decreased significantly.
PM (Particulate Matters) was collected from a bag filter dust collector at an aluminum foundries, and its physicochemical properties were investigated using particle size analyzer and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (SEM/EDS). The median volume diameter of the particles passing through the pretreatment dust collector of the cyclone was approximately 10 ㎛. The cyclone pretreatment dust collector was shown to significantly reduce the throughput of large particles with a particle size of 100 ㎛ or more. The chemical composition of the particles showed a high Al content, and trace amounts of Mg, Si, and Zn were detected.
Aluminum alloy 2024 matrix composites reinforced with $Al_2O_3$ particles, were prepared by rheo-compocasting, a process which consists of the incoporation distribution of reinforcement by stirring within a semi-solid alloy. The microstructures and characteristics of the interfaces have been studied using optical microscope and scanning electon microscope in 2024 aluminum alloy composites reinforced with $Al_2O_3$ particles. The main results are as follows: (1) $Al_2O_3$ particles were well distributed in composites by using rheo-compocasting. (2) As the addition of $Al_2O_3$ particle increases, the average dendrite numbers and the hardness were increased. (3) Interaction between $Al_2O_3$ particles and alloy 2024 resulted in the formation of Mg and Cu element rich region around the $Al_2O_3$ particles.
To develop a functionally graded microstructure of cylindrical liner, effect of centrifugal casting parameters such as pouring temperature of hyper-eutectic Al-Si alloy melt, mold pre-heating temperature, and rotational frequency of mold on distribution of primary Si particles across wall thickness were investigated. Segregation tendency of Si particles toward inner side of cylindrical liner increased as the increase of rotational frequency of mold, pouring temperature of melt and mold pre-heating temperature. Especially, distribution density of primary Si particles within 1.5 mm from inner surface of cylindrical liner was above 35% under the centrifugal casting condition of $750^{\circ}C$ melt pouring temperature, $300^{\circ}C$ mold pre-heating temperature, and 2500 rpm mold rotational frequency.
The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of impurity level and fabrication processes on the strength, impact and fracture toughness of 7075, 7050 and 7175 aluminum alloy forgings. A specially processed 7175S-T74 aluminum forgings was superior to a conventionally processed 7075-T73, 7050-T74 and 7175-T74 aluminum forgings in both strength and toughness. The reduction of impurity level of iron and silicon has significantly diminished the size and volume fraction of second phase particles such as $Al_7Cu_2Fe$ and $Mg_2Si$. A further reduction of the amount of second phase particles has been observed by applying a special fabrication process. This phenomena result from the application of intermediate soaking at higher temperature and more sufficiant hot working temperature than that of a conventional processing.

This paper presents a new approach for analyzing the microstructure of $SiC_p$-reinforced aluminum matrix composites from digital images. Various samples of aluminum matrix composite were fabricated by hot pressing the powder mixtures with certain volume and size combinations of pure Al and SiC particles. Microstructures of the samples were analyzed by computer-based image processing methods. Since the conventional methods are not suitable for separating phases of such complex microstructures, some new algorithms have been developed for the improved recognition and characterization of the particles in the metal matrix composites.
