In order to investigate the wear behavior of aluminum alloy depended on different hardness of the mating tool steel, sliding wear tests were conducted. It was found that the wear characteristics pattern of aluminum alloy for sliding speed was not affected by the hardness of the mating tool steel. However, the effects of the hardness of the mating tool steel exhibited only in relatively low sliding speed ranges. At these ranges, the wear rate of aluminum alloy decreased when increasing the hardness of the mating tool steel. This was attributed by the fact that $Al_2O_3$ particles released from the aluminum worn surface were crushed and embedded on the mating worn surface with high hardness level. At the high sliding speed ranges, wear of aluminum alloy was hardly occurred by the formation of thick $Al_2O_3$ film on the worn surface, regardless of the hardness of the mating tool steel.

A numerical analysis of two phase flow in the solid rocket nozzle was conducted. Stoke number was defined over the various aluminum oxide($AI_2$$O_3$) particle sizes and particle trajectories were treated by Lagrangian approach. Particle stability was considered by the definition of Weber number in a rocket nozzle. Large particles are divided after the nozzle throat as the flow accelerates rapidly. The division of particles changes the particle distribution at the nozzle exit. From the above results, it was found that the nozzle converge section surface might be affected by aluminum oxide particles. Also, Mechanical erosion rate of nozzle surface was predicted for different materials.

The phase stability of atomized U-10wt. %Mo powder and the thermal compatibility of dispersed fuel meats at 40$0^{\circ}C$ and 50$0^{\circ}C$ have been characterized. Atomized U-10Mo powder has a good \ulcorner-U phase stability, and excellent thermal compatibility with aluminum matrix in a dispersion fuel. It is thought that the good phase stability is related to th large supersaturation of Mo atoms in the atomized particles. The reasons for the excellent thermal compatibility have been considered to be as follows. Before thermal decomposition of ${\gamma}$-U in particle, supersaturated Mo atoms at ${\gamma}$-U grain boundaries inhibit the diffusion of Al atoms. After thermal decomposition of ${\gamma}$-U into ${\gamma}$-U and U$_2$Mo, the intermetallic compound of U$_2$Mo seems to retard the penetration of Al atoms. The penetration mechanisms of aluminum atoms in the atomized particles are assumed be classified as (a) diffusion through the reacted layer between fuel particles and Al matrix leaving a kernel-like unreacted island and (b) diffusion along grain boundaries showing several unreacted islands and more reacted regions.
Creep tests were conducted under a condition of constant stress on two aluminum-based alloys containing particles: Al-5% Mg-0.25% Fe and Al-5% Zn-0.22% Fe. The role of grain boundary sliding was examined in the plane of the surface using a square grid printed on the surface by carbon deposition and perpendicular to the surface using two-beam interferometry. Estimates of the contribution of grain boundary sliding to the total strain, $\varepsilon_{gbs}/\varepsilon_t$ reveal two trends; (i) the sliding contribution is consistently higher in the Al-Mg-Fe alloy, and (ii) the sliding contribution is essentially independent of strain in the Al-Mg-Fe alloy, but it shows a significant decrease with increasing strain in the Al-Zn-Fe alloy. Sliding is inhibited by the presence of particles and its contributions to the total strain are low. This inhibition is attributed to the interaction between the grain boundary dislocations responsible for sliding and particles in the boundaries.
The growing use of aluminum for castings over the past decade has brought with it the increased scrutiny of component properties. One area that has received much attention is the effect of in inclusions - or impurities particles held in the metal - on casting properties. A new method of electromagnetic separation for removal of inclusions in aluminum alloy melts is proposed. The principle is that as the electromagnetic force induced in metal acts on inclusions due to low electric conductivity, they are moved to the direction opposite to electromagnetic force and can be separated and removed from the melt. Experiments were carried out on A356 melt mixed alumina particles and commercial Al alloys of ADC 10 and 12. In the experiment using A356, it was proved that $Al_2O_3$ particles was separated and removed continuously from matrix melt by electromagnetic force. Based on these results, the continuous separation experiment that used ADC 10, 12 was carried and the cleanliness of melt was assessed by the amount of porosity, hydrogen contents, PoDFA and mechanical properties through tensile test. As the results of analyses, the amount of porosity and hydrogen contents decreased without variation of chemical composition in the specimen that passed the electromagnetic continuous separator. In addition, tensile strength and elongation of this specimen increased by $20{\sim}30%$ because of reduction of inclusions.
Composite materials offer distinct and unique properties that are not naturally inherited in the individual materials that make them. One of the most attractive composites to manufacture is the aluminum alloy matrix composite, because it usually combines easiness of availability, light weight, strength, and other favorable properties. In the current work, Powder Metallurgy Method (PMM) is used to prepare Al2024 matrix composites reinforced with different mixing ratios of yttrium oxide (Y2O3) particles. The tests performed on the composites include physical, mechanical, and tribological, as well as microstructure analysis via optical microscope. The results show that the experimental density slightly decreases while the porosity increases when the reinforcement ratio increases within the selected range of 0 ~ 20 wt%. Besides this, the yield strength, tensile strength, and Vickers hardness increase up to a 10 wt% Y2O3 ratio, after which they decline. Moreover, the wear results show that the composite follows the same paradigm for strength and hardness. It is concluded that this composite is ideal for application when higher strength is required from aluminum composites, as well as lighter weight up to certain values of Y2O3 ratio.

Particle collection characteristics of the MOUDI cascade impactor has been studied for coarse particles in the range of 2 to 20$mu extrm{m}$ in aerodynamic diameter. A vibrating orifice aerosol generator was empolyed to generate monodisperse test aerosols. The oleic acid and sodium chloride(NaCl) particles were used as test aerosols. Aluminum foil and Teflon filter were selected as impaction media. The sampling flow rate was changed from 25 to 35L/min. Particle collection efficiency for single stage was examined for liquid particles. The stage response was obtained experimentally for the cascade impactor composed of three stages and a backup filter. The results showed that most of particle collection efficiencies measured in this work are similar to the efficiency curves obtained by Marple et al.(1991). For particles less than cut-off size of the stage, the collection efficiencies of solid particles are similar to those of loquid particles. However, the collection efficiency of solid particles decreases with mereasing particle diameter for the particles greater than the actual cut-off size of the impactor. The particle collection efficiency increases with increasing sampling flow rate at the same particel size. However, the collection efficiency curves seem not to be greatly shifted with the flow rate. The stage responses obtained by direct measurements in this work are in good agreement with those derived from the collection efficiency curves for single stage.
Yttrium aluminum garnet(YAG) powders were synthesized by spray-drying of the hydroxides coprecipitated from a mixture of aqueous solutions of $Al(NO_3)_3.9H_2O \;and\; Y(NO_3)_3.6H_2O$ Phase formation in the powders during heat treatments and their sintering charactristics were investigated. In the powder obtained by washing the hydroxides before spray-drying, a metastable yttrium aluminum hexagonal (YAH) phase was first crystallized and then transformed into YAG as temperature was increased. The formation of YAH was attributed to a deviation in compositions of the particles from the starting composition of YAG. However, the powder prepared without washing step contained a stable yttrium aluminum monoclinic(YAM) phase in addition to YAG due to a large deviation from the starting composition. A powder compact of a single phase YAG was pressureless-sintered for 4 hrs at $1700^{\circ}C$ and the density was 93% of the theoretical density.
A finite element based microstructural modeling for the size dependent strengthening of particle reinforced aluminum composites is presented. The model accounts explicitly for the enhanced strength in a discretely defined "punched zone" around the particle in an aluminum matrix composite as a result of geometrically necessary dislocations developed through a CTE mismatch. The density of geometrically necessary dislocations is calculated considering volume fraction of the particle. Results show that predicted flow stresses with different particle size are in good agreement with experiments. It is also shown that 0.2% offset yield stresses increases with smaller particles and larger volume fractions and this length-scale effect on the enhanced strength can be observed by explicitly including GND region around the particle. The strengths predicted with the inclusion of volume fraction in the density equation are slightly lower than those without.

The new alloy$^{1)}$ is made from rapidly solidified Al-Ni-Zr-Ce aluminum alloy powder, and has the following unique mechanical characteristics:(1) The stress-strain curve shows a yield point; (2) The alloy shows high heat resistance; (3) Although the alloy is submicron particle diameter, it shows excellent creep resistance. We observed the micro structures of this new alloy, and it is thought that is based on the following reasons:(1) The dislocation strongly adheres to the alloy's many crystal boundaries;(2) The added alloying elements have a small diffusion coefficient in aluminum;(3) The tiny intermetallic compound particles crystallizing at the grain boundary.
