  • The neutralizing capacities of the antacids, which are frequently used in Korean market, were evaluated in vitro by the methods of Resset and Rice, Fordtran and Collyns, and modified Beekman, respectively. The antacids used in the study are two kinds, the one is preparations from Seoul National University Hospital and the other is products from pharmaceutical companies, and their components are aluminum phosphate, aluminum hydroxide, magnesium aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, basic aluminum sucrose sulfate and $2MgO{\times}Al_{2}O_{3}{\times}SiO_{3}$, etc. The hospital preparations, DMC and MAC powders, showed most powerful and sustained neutralizing capacities, i.e. they maintained the pH range from 5 to 8 for 60min, Whereas pharmaceutical products, aluminum hydroxide gel containing magnesium hydroxide and magnesium aluminum hydroxide gel exhibited a moderate capacities, i.e pH ranged from 3 to 6, and aluminum phosphate, $2MgO{\times}Al_{2}O_{3}{\times}SiO_{2}$ and basic aluminum sucrose sulfate displayed a weak activity, pH ranged from 2 to 3. When the therapeutic doses of aluminum hydroxide gel containing magnesium hydroxide and magnesium aluminum hydroxide gel were divided into 2 doses and each dose was used at the interval of 30min., the divided doses kept more prolonged higher pH than the single therapeutic dose. Milliequivalents of neutralizing capacities of each antacid were measured by the method of Fordtran and Collyns. The milliequivalents per 1ml of aluminum hydroxide gel, aluminum hydroxide gel containing magnesium hydroxide, magnesium aluminum hydroxide gel and aluminum phosphate were 2.87, 2.86, 2.57, and 0.67, respectively. The milliequivalents per 100mg of preparations, i.e. MAC powder, dried aluminum hydroxidgel, DMC powder, 2MgO, $Al_{2}O_{3}$. $SiO_{2}$, magnesium aluminum hydroxide and basic aluminum sucrose sulfate were 1.91, 1.68 1.63, 1.45, 1.44, and 0.44, respectively.

  • Aluminum dross should be recycled in consideration of characteristics of the dross and its reutilization after processing. In this study, aluminum dross generated in the domestic secondary aluminum industry was processed to use it as raw material for producing aluminum hydroxide. Sample dross was classified according to its size. The dross smaller than 1mm was leached with sodium hydroxide solution to extract the remaining aluminum from the dross into the solution, and then aluminum hydroxide precipitate was recovered from the leach liquor. Purity of the obtained aluminum hydroxide was above 98 percent, and particle size of the sample was in range of 3-39${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. From the result, it was suggested that this process could be applicable to recycling of aluminum dross.

  • Waste aluminum dross is a major waste in the aluminum scrap smelters, and some metallic aluminum remains in the waste dross. In the previous study, waste aluminum dross was leached with sodium hydroxide solution to extract the remained aluminum into the solution, and aluminum hydroxide precipitate was recovered from the leached solution. A pilot plant was constructed and tested to demonstrate the developed technology. One thousand tons of waste aluminum dross could be processed, and about five hundred tons of aluminum hydroxide could be produced in the pilot plant. From the test run of the pilot plant, it was confirmed that the developed technology could be employed as a commercial scale and the produced aluminum hydroxide could be used for water treatment agent.

  • The dissolution of domestic aluminum hydroxide of 99.7% purity has been performed with mineral and organic acid prior to the synthesis of aluminum compounds from aluminum solution. Mean particle size of aluminum hydroxide used in the work was $14.4{\mu}m$, $22.9{\mu}m$ and $62.3{\mu}m$, respectively and the effect of reaction temperature, concentration of acid and reaction time on the dissolution of aluminum hydroxide has been examined. As a result, the dissolution of aluminum hydroxide was increased with the concentration of HCl and more than 70% dissolution was obtained with 5 mole/l HCl at $70^{\circ}C$ for reaction time of 4 hr. As far as the dissolution of aluminum hydroxide with sulfuric acid was concerned, it was found that the optimum concentration of sulfuric acid was about 6 mole/l for the effective dissolution of aluminum hydroxide. When oxalic acid was used for the dissolution of aluminum hydroxide, nearly complete dissolution could be obtained by the dissolution for 16 hr with 1.0 mole/l oxalic acid at $90^{\circ}C$.

In this study, aluminum dross generated in the domestic secondary aluminum industry was processed to use it as raw material for producing aluminum hydroxide. Sample dross was classified according to its size. The dross smaller than $850\mu$m was leached with sodium hydroxide solution to extract the remaining aluminum from the dross into the solution, and then aluminum hydroxide precipitate was recovered (rom the leach liquor. Purity of the obtained aluminum hydroxide was above 98% and size of the sample was in range of $\3~39mu$m. Recovery of aluminum hydroxide precipitate was highest on condition that A/C ratio of the solution was 0.5 and pulp density was 14~16% at the leaching step. From the result, it was suggested that this process could be applicable to recycling of aluminum dross.

  • The relationships involving acid-consuming capacity and X-ray powder diffraction patterns of aluminum hydroxide gel were studied. The aging of antacid efficacy of aluminum hydroxide gel has also been characterized by using X-ray powder diffraction. The acid-consuming capacity decreased with progress of crystallization from amorphous alumino gel, and it was found that aged product at 80.deg. C had crystal structure of bohmite (.alpha.-Al.sub 2/O$_{2}$(OH)$_{2}$). It was also noted that the rate of aging decreased with decreasing pH of aluminum hydroxide gel.

  • The synthesis of aluminum oxalate, one of the aluminum organic compounds, has been performed using aluminum hydroxide as a raw material. For this aim, domestic aluminum hydroxide of 99.7% purity was dissolved by oxalic acid to produce an aqueous aluminum solution. As a result, it was found that aluminum hydroxide could be dissolved almost completely by the reaction with 1.0 mole/l oxalic acid solution at $90^{\circ}C$ for 16 hr. It was strongly required to keep the ratio of ethanol/Al solution more than 2.0 for the synthesis of aluminum oxalate from the aluminum solution. Furthermore, the pH should be controlled to be more than 8.2 in order to obtain the recovery of aluminum oxalate higher than 90%. From the chemical analysis of aluminum oxalate prepared in this work, the content of $NH_4$, Al and C was found to be 14.5, 7.18 and 17.4%, respectively. Accordingly, the aluminum oxalate synthesized from the aluminum solution was confirmed to be $(NH_4)_3Al(C_2O_4)_3$ $3H_2O$.

  • The removal of minor elements such as Na, Ca and Fe has been performed from domestic aluminum hydroxide of 99.7% purity with organic acids. Oxalic and citric acid were used as the leaching agent, respectively and aluminum hydroxides of different particle size were also employed for the purification with organic acid leaching. Fine grinding of aluminum hydroxide has been tested using ball mills and leaching characteristics of each element have also been examined in terms of leaching parameters such as temperature, acid concentration, and solid density. As a result, it was found that oxalic acid showed higher leaching efficiency than citric acid in the concentration range of 0.1 to 1.0 mole/l and leaching amount of each element was also increased with the acid concentration and reaction temperature. It was observed that about 45% of Na was leached out during ball milling process which implied that the majority of Na contained in aluminum hydroxide was water soluble compound.

  • In this work, CR (Chloroprene Rubber) was emulsified by phase-inversion emulsification with nonionic surfactants (NP-1025, LE-1017, and OP-1019) and an anionic surfactant (SDBS; sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate), and its stabilization was investigated through a study of its adsorption characteristics, zeta potential, and flow behavior. As the amount of the mixed surfactant increased, the droplet size decreased, resulting in the increase of viscosity. In particular, a CR emulsion with a lower absorbance in the UV spectrum exhibited the highest zeta potential. The results of this experiment showed that the CR emulsion prepared using (LE-1017) and SDBS was the most stable. In this study, calcium hydroxide and aluminum hydroxide were added to enhance the mechanical properties of the CR emulsion, and the relationship between tensile strength, tear strength and surface free energy were investigated. The tensile and tear strengths of the CR emulsion incresed as the amount of calcium hydroxide and aluminum hydroxide increased. The highest tensile and tear strengths and surface free energy were observed for additions of 1.0% calcium hydroxide and 0.80% aluminum hydroxide, respectively. It was concluded that the interfacial bonding strength was improved by the even dispersion of calcium hydroxide and aluminum hydroxide in the CR emulsion.
