Al-Fe-V-Si alloys reinforced with SiC particles were prepared by multi-layer spray deposition technique. Both microstructures and mechanical properties including hardness and tensile properties development during hot exposure process of Al-8.5Fe-1.3V-1.7Si, Al-8.5Fe-1.3V-1.7Si/15 vol% $SiC_P$ and Al-10.0Fe-1.3V-2Si/15 vol% $SiC_P$ were investigated. The experimental results showed that an amorphous interface of about 3 nm in thickness formed between SiC particles and the matrix. SiC particles injected silicon into the matrix; thus an elevated silicon concentration was found around $\alpha-Al_{12}(Fe,\;V)_3Si$ dispersoids, which subsequently inhibited the coarsening and decomposition of $\alpha-Al_{12}(Fe,\;V)_3Si$ dispersoids and enhanced the thermostability of the alloy matrix. Moreover, the thermostability of microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-10.0Fe-1.3V-2Si/15 vol% $SiC_P$ are of higher quality than those of Al-8.5Fe-1.3V-1.7Si/15 vol% $SiC_P$.
A16061 alloy reinforced with 10 vol% $\delta$-A1$_2$O$_3$ short fiber have been fabricated by Rheo-compocasting and squeeze casting and extruded at high temperature using conical shape die and curved shape die with various extrusion ratios.. Tensile and hardness tests were carried out to examine mechanical properties of extruded materials and SEM observation of fractured surface was capable of accounting for fracture mechanism and bonding state of fiber and matrix.
A semi-solid alloy in which solid and liquid phase are co-existing is obtained by stirring of A17075 molten metal. A semi-solid alloy is dependent on the corresponding temperature within the solid-liquid range, and the process parameters should be controlled accurately to obtain the homogeneous semisolid alloy. The fabrication possibility of fiber-reinforced aluminum alloy containing $Al_2O_3$ short fibers with vigorous agitation of short fibers were obtained by control of stirring time, solid fraction and impeller speed in extrusion billet fabrication processes. The microstructure to extrusion billet fabricated by low pressure casting was investigated for fiber dispersion state. The relationship between the extrustion force and velocity at hot extrustion, the flow strain and extrusion ratio were theoretically described. The surface defects with lubricants and without lubricant after hot extrusion were investigated. The composites materials after hot extrusion were measured by vickers hardness with extrusion ratio. It has become clear that the secondary working such as hot extrusion was very useful to obtained improved the mechanical properties of metal matrix composites.
Both cast and extruded composites of SiC whisker reinforced 6061 Al alloy matrix were fabricated by high pressure infiltration of the alloy melt into the SiC preform and subsequent hot extrusion of the composite ingots. The micro structures, age hardening behavior and mechanical properties have been examined on the both cast and extruded composites of SiCw/6061. The cast composites of SiCw/6061 were obtained in which SiC whiskers were randomly oriented. Hot extrusion of these cast composites lead to alignment of the whisker in the direction of extrusion. Strengthening effect of whisker in the extruded composites is lower than that of the cast composites. The cast composites of SiCw/6061 showed higher thensile strength and lower elongation than extruded composites of SiCw/6061 at all testing temperatures. Lower tensile strength and higher elongation of the extruded composites were attributable to fine grain structures in which grain boundary sliding occruued preferentially at elevated temperatures.

This study investigates the interfacial reaction between powder-metallurgy high-entropy alloys (HEAs) and cast aluminum. HEA pellets are produced by the spark plasma sintering of Al0.5CoCrCu0.5FeNi HEA powder. These sintered pellets are then placed in molten Al, and the phases formed at the interface between the HEA pellets and cast Al are analyzed. First, Kirkendall voids are observed due to the difference in the diffusion rates between the liquid Al and solid HEA phases. In addition, although Co, Fe, and Ni atoms, which have low mixing enthalpies with Al, diffuse toward Al, Cu atoms, which have a high mixing enthalpy with Al, tend to form Al-Cu intermetallic compounds. These results provide guidelines for designing Al matrix composites containing high-entropy phases.
In this study, aluminum (Al) alloy matrix composites in which B4C particles were uniformly dispersed was manufactured through stir casting followed by hot rolling process. The microstructure, mechanical properties, and wear resistance properties of the prepared composites were analyzed. The composite in which the 40 ㎛ sized B4C particles were uniformly dispersed increased the tensile strength and improved wear performance as the volume ratio of the reinforcement increased. In the case of the 20 vol.% composite, the tensile strength was 292 MPa, which was 155% higher than that of the Al6061. As a result of the wear resistance test, the wear width and depth of the 20 vol.% B4C/Al6061 composites were 856 ㎛, and 36 ㎛, and the friction coefficient was 0.382, which were considerably superior to Al6061.

$Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ hybrid composites are fabricated by squeeze infiltration method. From the misconstructive of $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ hybrid composites fabricated by squeeze infiltration method, uniform distribution of reinforcements and good bondings are found. Hardness value of $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ hybrid composites increases linearly with the volume fraction of reinforcement because SiC whisker and $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$ fiber have an outstanding hardness. Optimal aging conditions are obtained by examining the hardness of $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ hybrid composites with different aging time. Tensile properties such as Young's modulus and ultimate tensile strength are improved up to 30% and 40% by the addition of reinforcements, respectively. Failure mode of $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ hybrid composites is ductile on microstructural level. Through the abrasive wear test and wear surface analysis, wear behaviour and mechanism of 6061 aluminum and $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ hybrid composites are characterized under various testing conditions. The addition of SiC whisker to $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ composites gives rise to improvement of the wear resistance. The wear resistance of $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ hybrid composites is superior to that of Al/SiC composites. The wear mechanism of aluminum alloy is mainly abrasive wear at low speed range and adhesive and melt wear at high speed range. In contrast, that of $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ hybrid composites is abrasive wear at all speed range, but severe wear when counter material is stainless steel. As the testing temperature increases, wear loss of aluminum alloy decreases because the matrix is getting more ductile, but that of $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ hybrid composites is hardly varied. Oil lubricant is more effective to reduce the wear loss of aluminum alloy and $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ hybrid composites at high speed range.
The Al-Cr-Zr composite metal powders were prepared by mechanical alloying and consolidated by vacuum hot pressing. The microstructural characteristics and the thermal stability of the MA Al-Cr-Zr alloys were evaluated by means of microhardness measurement, XRD and TEM in order to develop high temperature, high strength aluminum alloys. The mechanical alloying was conducted in attritor with 300rpm for 20 hours. The density of the vacuum hot pressed Al-Cr-Zr alloy reached at 97% of theoretical one. After exposing at $300^{\circ}C$ for 100 hours, there is almost no variation in hardness change of the MA alloys. Even after exposing at $ 500^{\circ}C$ for 100 hours, the hardness of the alloy was decreased within 6% of the initial value. The fine stable $Al_3Zr\;and\; Al_{13}Cr_2$ intermetallics were formed at the stage of consolidation and heat treatment in aluminum matrix. The good thermal stability of the MA Al-Cr-Zr alloy can ab attributed to the role of the dispersoids, inhibiting grain growth of nanocrystalline, and the final grain size after heat treatment was less than 150nm.
A noble technique has been developed for fabricating in situ formed $TiC_p/Al$ composites. In this process, fairly stable TiC particles were in situ synthesized in liquid aluminum by the interfacial reaction between an Al-Ti melt and SiC, which is a comparatively unstable carbide from the view-point of thermodynamics. It is possible in the present process to generate TiC particles of nearly 1 ${\mu}m$ in diameter, even utilizing SiC of 14 ${\mu}m$ as raw material. However, the dispersion behavior of TiC particles in the matrix depends on the size of the raw material SiC. Decomposing finer SiC makes the dispersion of TiC particles more uniform and the mechanical properties of composites are improved accordingly. The structure of in situ composites and their mechanical properties are affected by the fabrication temperature and the stirring time. It has been found that the most suitable condition for fabrication should be applied depending on the size of the raw material, even if the same kinds of carbide are used. Furthermore, although Al-Ti-Si system intermetallic compounds are detected in a $TiC_p/Al-Si$ composite which is fabricated by conventional melt-stirrng method, these compounds can not be observed in a $TiC_p/Al-Si$ composite made by this in situ production method. Hence the mechanical properties of the in situ $TiC_p/Al-Si$ composite are superior to those of the conventional $TiC_p/Al-Si$ composites.
This paper presents an analytical method considering tensile strength enhancement in hybrid $Al_2O_3$ fiber/particle/aluminum composites(MMCs). The tensile strength and elastic modulus of the hybrid MMCs are even 20% higher than those of the fiber reinforced MMCs with same volume fraction of reinforcements. This phenomenon is explained by the cluster model which is newly proposed in this research, and the strengthening mechanisms by a cluster is analyzed using simple modified rule of mixtures. From the analysis, it is observed that cluster structure in hybrid MMCs increase the fiber efficiency factor for the tensile strength and the orientation factor for the elastic modulus. The present theory is then compared with experimental results which was performed using squeeze infiltrated hybrid MMCs made of hybrid $Al_2O_3$ short fiber/particle preform and AC8A alloy as base metal, and the agreement is found to be satisfactory.
