  • Laser cladding is a technique for modification of metal surface. In this laser cladding experiment a metal powder feeding system was developed for more efficient laser cladding. This system can reduce processing time and be used simpler than the conventional method. The feeding of metal powder has given a rise to the process for sequential buildup of bulk rapidly solidified materials in the form of fine powder stream to the laser cladding process. The parameters of laser cladding have been investigated using this experimental equipment. Bronze on aluminum alloy and copper on aluminum alloy were experimented by using defocused beam, powder feeding system, and gas shielding. Good cladding was achieved in the range of beam travel speed of 2.25m/min. In the case of copper/aluminum and bronze/aluminum substrate, the absorption of laser beam was too high to produce low diluted clad. In the case of copper/1050 aluminum, the optimal laser cladding condition was of laser power of 2.8kW, powder feed rate of 0.31g/s and beam travel speed of 2.25m/min. In the case of bronze/aluminum the optimal condition is of laser power of 2.5kW, powder feed rate of 0.31g/s, and beam travel speed of 2.36m/min.

  • 2219 aluminum alloy bonded diamond wheels containing intermetallic compounds were fabricated by powder metallurgy method. Nickel and titanium were added in aluminum matrix piece. The hot pressing condition was $600^{\circ}C$ and 20 Mpa in the furnace of the electric resistance type. The mechanical properties and grinding tests were carried out to confirm the wheel performance. Aluminum oxide ceramics were chosen for use in the grinding tests. The test proved that the heat resistance 2219 aluminum bonded diamond wheel containing 15 wt% nickel and 15 wt% titanium respectively showed the best performance.

  • The success of continuous aluminum powder combustion with steam plasma is different from hydrocarbon ignition source. Ignition characteristics of aluminum powder with high temperature thermal plasma is studied with oxidizer-free environment. Experiment with argon plasma has same temperature conditions at 4500 K and particle feeding condition for previous combustion test with steam plasma and swirl combustor. The temperature of the plasma was measured using Optical Emission Spectroscopy method. Ignition characteristics were analyzed by SEM image and EDS. Aluminum powder with plasma has rapid evaporation mechanism contrast to hydrocarbon ignition source. It enhances to aluminum powder effective ignition characteristics.

  • Powder forging technology has been introduced to manufacture the parts for vehicles. This paper describes the process conditions for the powder forging of aluminium also piston for vehicles including the determination of composition of aluminum alloy by experiment, preform design by FEM simulation, coed compaction of aluminum alloy powder, sintering of preform, and the experiment of powder forging. The mechanical properties such as hardness, tensile strength, and elongation of the farmed piston were invested and compared with casted piston and forged piston. The tensile strength and hardness of the piston formed by powder forging technology were much more excellent than other pistons.

  • The device for studying combustion characteristic of aluminum powder and water was developed. The device has ability to adjust temperature, pressure, and equivalent ratio to some specified value which effect on combustion characteristic of aluminum and water mixture. Methane combustor, water supply device, aluminum powder feeder, and linear combustor are assembled to aluminum combustion test device. Each device has the ability to supply matter to combustor on steady and quantitatively controlled manner and test sequence specified by user can be automatically controlled. The combustion of aluminum powder was observed when integrated device was operated normally.

  • As(V) adsorption on aluminum oxide powder which was recycled from industrial wastes containing aluminum hydroxide was evaluated. Aluminum oxide powder in this study was prepared by calcinating aluminum hydroxide wastes at$550^{\circ}C$. Spectroscopic analysis indicated that the aluminum hydroxide wastes were changed to aluminum oxide by calcination. Arsenic adsorption isotherm was conducted with variation of ionic strength and multiple-ion systems using Ca(II) and Cu(II). As(V) removal showed typical anionic adsorption characteristics that the removal efficiency decreased with increasing pH in single As(V) system as well as in binary and ternary system. More than 80% of As(V) at an initial concentration of $5{\times}10^{-5}$ M was removed from aluminum oxide powder in As(V) single system. The effect of ionic strength on As(V) adsorption was negligible, which indicated the strong bonding between aluminum oxide powder and As(V). The removal efficiency of As(V) was higher in a binary system with Cu(II) than in a binary system with Ca(II).

  • Densification behavior of copper powder was investigated to study the effect of an aluminum mold under warm pressing. The low flow stress of an aluminum mold is appropriate to apply hydrostatic stress to powder compacts during compaction under high temperature. The suggested powder metallurgy process is very useful under high temperature since copper powder compacts have higher relative density over axial stress of 100 MPa and show more homogeneity as compared with conventional warm pressing. Elastoplastic constitutive equation proposed by Shima and Oyane was implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS) for densification behavior under warn pressing by using a metal mold. Finite element results agreed well with experimental data for densification and deformation of copper powder compacts in the mold.

  • Aluminum nitride (AlN) nanopowders with low degree of agglomeration and uniform particle size were synthesized by carbothermal reduction of alumina and subsequent direct nitridization. Boehmite powder was homogeneously admixed with carbon black nanopowders by ball milling. The powder mixture was treated under ammonia atmosphere to synthesize AlN powder at lour temperature. The effect of process variables such as boehmite/carbon black powder ratio, reaction temperature and reaction time on the synthesis of AlN nanopowder was investigated.

  • Vacuum degassing is essential in the preparation of RS P/M aluminum alloys to remove adsorbates and for the decomposition of hydrated-$Al_{2}O_3$ on the powder surface. Changes in the surface characteristics during vacuum degassing were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and temperature-programmed desorption measurement. Hydrated-$Al_{2}O_3$ decomposition to crystalline-$Al_{2}O_3$ and hydrogen desorption on the surface of argon gas-atomized aluminum powder occurred at 623 K and 725 K, respectively. This temperature difference suggests that the reaction converting hydrated-$Al_{2}O_3$ to crystalline-$Al_{2}O_3$ during vacuum degassing should be divided into the two reactions $"2Al+Al_{2}O_3{\cdot}3H_2O\;2Al_{2}O_3+6H_{surf}"and"6H_{surf}3H_2"$.
