  • Alumina slurriers, having various amount of alumina and ratio of organic additives, were prepared for tape casting. The relative viscosities were compared to investigate influence of composition on stability of the slurry and plotted as a function of powder fraction. They raised with increasing powder fraction of slurries, revealing a exponential function curve, which means that stability of slurry was not affected by amount and composition of organic additives. Cast green tapes were tested under tensile condition at room temperature. The increase in alumina ratio and binder ratio was found to decrease strain to failure of green tapes from 363% to 45% and from 68% to 25%, respectively. Tensile strength of green tapes increased abruptly with increasing alumina ratio, which showed its maximum at 1 MPa. On other hand, Tensile strength increased continuously from 0.5 MPa to 4 MPa with increasing binder ratio. Mechanical properties of them were affected seriously and lost their properties by elevating temperature from 20$^{\circ}C$ to 80$^{\circ}C$.

  • In this study, powder compaction of AZO (alumina doped zinc oxide) powder was performed with a MTS 810 test system using a cylindrical die having a diameter of 10mm. Pressure-density curves were measured based on the load cell and displacement of the punch. The AZO powder compacts with various densities were formed to investigate the mechanical properties such as fracture stress of the AZO powder as a function of the compact density. Two types of compression tests were conducted in order to estimate the fracture stress using different loading paths: a diameteral compression test and a uniaxial compression test. The pressure-density curves of the AZO powder were obtained and the fracture stress of the compacted powders with various densities was estimated. The results show that the compact pressure dramatically increases as the density increases. Based on the experimental results, calibration of the modified Drucker-Prager/Cap model of the AZO powder for use in FE simulations was developed.

  • Alumina tapes, having various weight ratios of alumina powder/(alumina+binder+plasticizer), X, and binder / (binder+plsticizer), Y, were prepared and their complex modulus was measured using Micro Fourier Rheometer. As the X and Y ratios increased, Transfer function(TF) magnitude and Transfer function (TF) phase increased and decreased, respectively, indicating that the elastic modulus of the tapes depends on the weight ratios. The temperature dependence of the viscosity of the tapes was visualized by the decreased TF magnitude and the increased TF phase. The Y ratio dependence of the complex modulus related to the glass transition temperature of the tapes and the moduls change by the Y ratio was higher than that by the X ratio within the comperature of the tapes and the modulus changes by the Y ratio was higher than that by the X ratio within the composition range, investigated in the present study. The measurement of the complex modulus of the alumina tapes suggested that the TF phase should be higher that 17$^{\circ}$for the tapes to be utilized for 3-dimensional shaping.

  • To fabricate the continuously porous alumina bodies by multi-extrusion process, carbon powder and ethylene vinyl acetate were used as a pore forming agent and a binder, respectively. As the change of extrusion pass number, reduction ratio as well as the volume fraction of core and tube, the porous alumina bodies having various kind of pore size and porosity could be obtained. The porous bodies showed continuous pore shape, high specific surface as well as high bending strength, which were compared with those of commercial alumina bodies. In-vitro study was carried out using MG-63 osteoblast cells to investigate of their biocompatibility. As a result, the cells grew well on top and bottom as well as inside surface of pore. From the result of in-vivo study of 3-dimensional porous alumina bodies using rats, it was confirmed that any inflammatory response was not found in the subcutaneous tissue around porous body. Also the porous bodies removed from the rats were fully covered with well-developed fibrous tissues and showed the formation of new capillary blood vessels.

  • The synthesis of NaA zeolite membrane on a porous alumina support from clear solution by using hydrothermal reaction was investigated. Effects of reaction temperature, reaction time and seeding for transformation of zeolite A membrane and powder which are produced in the reactor were monitored through X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The transformation process of producing Zeolite A membrane starts from the formation of the compact and continuous membrane on the surface of porous support from clear solution. The large Zeolite A poly-crystal was then farmed through the dissolution process. Finally, the process was advanced from sodalite to amorphous. In case of powder, sodalite is formed in the early stage of reaction because of surrounding space difference between membrane and powder crystal. Discrete surrounding space of powder crystal makes easy to transform to sodalite. From Zeolite A to amorphous through transformed product was rapidly advanced at high temperature while the membrane with somewhat low coverage was obtained at low temperature. A compact and continuous zeolite A membrane was synthesized at $120^{\circ}C$ in 12-hour period.

  • In the previous study. the powder casting was attempted as the rapid tooling. The powder casting was the process to cast dry powder into the casting mold transferred from R/P model and infiltrate the liquid binder to solidify the powder. And then, the melted copper was infiltrated to control the shrinkage rate of the final mold Conseqently, the shrinkage rate was under 0.1% through that process. The mechanical characteristic was also excellent. Generally, in the slurry casting, the alumina powder and the water soluble phenol were mainly used. However, the mechanical property of the phenol was not good enough to apply to molds directly. In this study, aluminium powder filled with epoxy is applicated to the slurry casting to solve these problems. The mechanical and thermal properties are better than phenol because the epoxy is the thermosetting resin. We achieved a successful result that the shrinkage rate is shortened about 0.047%. Futhermore, the manufacturing time and cost savings are significant. Finally, we assume that the developing possibility of this process is very optimistic.

  • The old technique of sandblasting which has been used for decoration of glass surface has recently been developed into a powder blasting technique for brittle materials such as glass, silicon and ceramics, capable of producing micro structures larger than 100${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. In this study, we introduced oblique powder blasting, and investigated the effect of the impacting angle of particles, the scanning times and the stand-off distance on the surface roughness and the weight-loss rate of samples with no mask, and the wall profile and overetching of samples with different mask pattern in powder blasting of soda-lime glass. The varying parameters were the different impact angles between 50$^{\circ}$ and 90$^{\circ}$, scanning times of nozzle up to 40 and the stand-off distances 70mm and 100mm. The widths of mask pattern were 0.2mm, 0.5mm and 1mm. The powder was alumina sharp particles, WA #600. The mass flow rate of powder during the erosion test was fixed constant at 175g/min and the blasting pressure of powder at 0.2Mpa.
