Library communities face many problems and limitations in describing alternative format materials based on the traditional MAchine Readable Cataloging (MARC) structure. To address these problems, this research proposes an XML-based descriptive metadata framework that establishes general but fundamental bibliographic aspects of various alternative format materials by providing core elements that are essential in describing these materials. Different from existing bibliographic structures, the proposed metadata framework can represent a fundamental descriptive structure by establishing four upper-level categories, 17 core elements, and 10 sub-elements in a hierarchical structure optimized to alternative format materials. By using this principal descriptive structure, the proposed metadata framework can guide different institutions in the creation of bibliographic records for these materials in a consistent way. It is also expected to address the difficulties in describing alternative format materials in library communities and enhance the information accessibility of individuals with various types of disabilities. In addition, the proposed metadata framework is an alternative approach which functions as a mediator between heterogeneous characteristics of alternative format materials and the existing bibliographic structures in library communities.

Alternative materials for the visually disabled are very important factors for accessing and using information, dissolving the knowledge information gap, social participation and integration. Nevertheless, since alternative materials have been produced, until recently, even under the voluntary efforts of the braille library and the financial support of local governments, the scope of the materials is restricted to literary materials and hobby books, duplicated in title, and limited in format. In this study, we investigated and analyzed the cases of domestic and international library and related organizations' alternative material production and the current state and perception of alternative materials by applying the survey method to special libraries for the visually disabled and the visually disabled. Based on these results, we added suggestions for the improvement for alternative material production and utilization.

Recently, an integrated electronic publishing format that can be used by disabled people and the general public is expected. If applied to national alternative material production strategy, it is expected that not only the problem of alternative material production strategy using existing DTD(Document Type Definition) but also various alternative material corresponding to the demand of consumer can be supplied. In order to cope with changes in the production and management strategy of the substitute materials for the rapidly changing persons with disabilities, it is necessary to develop the substitute materials related to the substitute materials, such as 'production of alternative materials', 'research and education of alternative material', and 'operation of alternative material network' The organization of the National Library for the Disabled should be expanded and reorganized so that a constructed center can be established and demonstrated its expertise.

The purpose of this study is to diagnose the current status of alternative materials in Korea and to suggest directions and goals for the development of alternative materials. The comprehensive list of national alternative materials and the list of popular and new books were analyzed using the collection evaluation method. Results first the percentage of alternative material collections based on the popular book list for 10 years is 90.1%. The production rate of alternative materials is low in the subjects of 'Language', 'Art' and 'Technology and Science'. Most of the service formats were 'text only daisy'. Second, the CCHR(Common Collection Holding Ratio) and CUI(Collection Uniqueness index) of alternative materials were analyzed using the union catalog. Libraries with a large volume of books have a high proportion of CCHR and CUI. Topics with the highest CCHR are 'Literature' and 'Social Science'. The subjects with the highest collection uniqueness index are 'religion', 'art', and 'language'. Third, the replacement ratio of new books for 3 years is 5.09%. During the same period, the average book purchase rate of public libraries was 8.83%. The average book purchase rate in public libraries is 8.83%, and it is necessary to increase the collection rate of alternative materials based on this ratio.

Animal testing was used traditionally in the cosmetics industry to confirm product safety, but has begun to be banned; alternative methods to replace animal experiments are either in development, or are being validated, worldwide. Research data related to test substances are critical for developing novel alternative tests. Moreover, safety information on cosmetic materials has neither been collected in a database nor shared among researchers. Therefore, it is imperative to build and share a database of safety information on toxicological mechanisms and pathways collected through in vivo, in vitro, and in silico methods. We developed the CAMSEC database (named after the research team; the Consortium of Alternative Methods for Safety Evaluation of Cosmetics) to fulfill this purpose. On the same website, our aim is to provide updates on current alternative research methods in Korea. The database will not be used directly to conduct safety evaluations, but researchers or regulatory individuals can use it to facilitate their work in formulating safety evaluations for cosmetic materials. We hope this database will help establish new alternative research methods to conduct efficient safety evaluations of cosmetic materials.

Bibliographic records for alternative format materials using a flat bibliographic structure based on unit record have limitations in that they cannot be linked with other related resources in record level, which makes it difficult to secure sufficient access to alternative format materials for people with disabilities. In order to address this problem, this research constructed a linking structure which adopted FRBR-based BIBFRAME structure to establish a bibliographic structure that can interrelate the bibliographic records with flat structure and the multi-level BIBFRAME structure. This research proposed a linking bibliographic structure that enables interlinking between bibliographic records for related alternative format materials by composing upper-level linking property categories and interconnecting them to classes and properties of BIBFRAME.

This study attempted to verify the impacts of the level of satisfaction in the user of alternative materials among people with visual impairment on their social participation, and the mediation effect of self-efficacy during such process. The subject of the study was the visually impaired who were live in Gyeonggi Province and were registered in the Korea Blind Union. The data of final 120 participants through a telephone survey were analyzed. The subject of the study used the recorded materials the most for the purpose of leisure and information research mainly at the braille library. The analysis of the mediation effect demonstrated that the level of satisfaction in the user of alternative materials among people with visual impairment had a statistically significant influence on social participation, and self-efficacy had a full mediation effect. These results imply the importance of alternative materials to assure the right to information access which can ultimately expand the social engagement of the visually impaired. Based on these study results, political suggestions are proposed to vitalize alternative materials in the future.

Public libraries provide information to all persons and its users are the inhabitants of the community it serves. This may not be the reality in some cases as some category of persons may not be properly served by the public library. This study assesses the provision of information materials in alternative format, in terms of its availability, access and level of use by the visually impaired in public libraries in southwestern Nigeria. The study adopted survey research design. Four (4) public libraries in four states were purposively selected because they are the ones that provide alternative format for the use of a sizable number of the visually impaired. Complete enumeration was used to capture all the 166 registered users of the libraries through the use of observations checklist and interview schedule. Data from 69.2% of the 166 visually impaired persons that were interviewed, and the observations made were analyzed. The result reveals that alternative formats availability were inadequate and, e-resources were not available while access to formats and information desired by the users were limited. Braille is the most utilized format; audio materials and large prints were seldom used. The demand for alternative formats is high but it is not related to level of use of materials. Provision of information materials in alternative formats for the visually impaired in public libraries cannot support the needs of the visually impaired; it requires intervention from all stakeholders. The study recommends improved investment and funding for public libraries and services to persons with disabilities.

The stiffness of the subbase materials is represented by the resilient modulus, $M_R$, which are very important properties in the mechanistic design of flexible pavement system. However, the cyclic $M_R$ testing method is too complex, expensive, and time consuming to be applicable on a production basis. In this study, the alternative $M_R$ testing technique for subbase materials was developed using a free-free resonant column (FF-RC) test considering deformational characteristics of subbase materials. To estimate the deformational characteristics of subbase materials, effects of strain amplitude and mean effective stress on modulus of subbase materials were investigated. The $M_R$ values determined by alternative testing procedures matched well with those determined by standard $M_R$ test, showing the capability of the proposed methods being used in determining $M_R$ values.

Methane emitted from ruminant livestock is regarded as a loss of feed energy and also a contributor to global warming. Methane is synthesized in the rumen as one of the hydrogen sink products that are unavoidable for efficient succession of anaerobic microbial fermentation. Various attempts have been made to reduce methane emission, mainly through rumen microbial manipulation, by the use of agents including chemicals, antibiotics and natural products such as oils, fatty acids and plant extracts. A newer approach is the development of vaccines against methanogenic bacteria. While ionophore antibiotics have been widely used due to their efficacy and affordable prices, the use of alternative natural materials is becoming more attractive due to health concerns regarding antibiotics. An important feature of a natural material that constitutes a possible alternative methane inhibitor is that the material does not reduce feed intake or digestibility but does enhance propionate that is the major hydrogen sink alternative to methane. Some implications of these approaches, as well as an introduction to antibiotic-alternative natural materials and novel approaches, are provided.
