  • In 1997, 103 isolates of Verticillium were obtained from roots and stems of tomato plants showing wilt symptoms in greenhouses in eight areas of Korea. Out of these isolates, 75 were edintified as V. dahliae while 28 were identified as V. albo-atrum based on their morpho-logical and cultural characteristics. Both Verticillium species produced colonies with conidiophores, which were more or less erect, hyaline, with verticillate branches, and with 3-4 phialides at each node. V. dahliae produced microsclerotia, while V. albo-atrum produced resting dark mycelium. Optimum temperatures for mycelial growth of V. dahliae and V. albo-atrum on PDA were 22 and $26^{\circ}$, respectively. Mycelial growth of V. albo-atrum was slower than that of V. dahliae. Pathoge-nicity tests revealed that tomato cvs. Zuikoh No. 102, Kyoryokubeiju No. 2, Zuiken, Kagimuza, and Momotaro were susceptible to V. albo-atrum, while cvs. Zuikoh No. 102 and Kyoryokubeiju No.2 were susceptible to V. dahliae.

  • We investigated the effect of straw mat cover and soil amendments on the reduction of runoff, non-point source pollution load and yield of a Chinese cabbage from alpine fields. Two plots on sandy loam soil were prepared. Experimental treatments were control and rice straw mat cover (3,300 kg/ha)+Polyacrylamide (PAM) (5 kg/ha)+Gypsum (1 ton/ha) (SPG). A variety of Chinese cabbage was cultivated and runoff was monitored during a growing season in 2012. Monitoring was conducted to seven times. Runoff rate of SPG plot was lower than those of control plot. The reduction rate of runoff from SPG plot was 29.4 % compared to control plot. The reduction rate of suspended solids (SS), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) load of SPG plot was 86.5 %, 34.7 % and 39.1 %, respectively. Yield of a Chinese cabbage from SPG plot (39,646 kg/ha) was greater than that of control plots (28,482 kg/ha). It was concluded that the use of SPG on soil surface could not only reduce the NPS pollution loads in receiving waters but also help increase the crop yield.

  • Material of a Bryocamptus species, formerly reported as B. umiatensis Wilson, 1958 from Sakhalin and South Korea, is here recognized as a distinct new species. Specimens of both sexes were recently obtained from an alpine wetland, Sumeunmulbaengdui, located in the Hallasan National Park, Korea, and newly registered as a Ramsar Wetland in 2015. The new species, B. jejuensis n. sp., differs from the type population of B. umiatensis from Alaska by the smooth margin of the anal operculum in both sexes, the peculiarly modified terminal seta on the distal endopodal segment of the male leg 3, the sword-like spinous seta on the distal endopodal segment of the male leg 4, and the presence of a setule row on the inner distal margin of the caudal rami in the female. Both sexes of the new species are described in detail with particular reference to the male characters. A revised key to the seven species of the genus Bryocamptus Chappuis, 1929 occurring in Korean waters is provided.

  • Crude extracts of pathogenic Streptomyces turgidiscabies isolates produced necrotic reaction on potato slices. Necrosis was first visible 24 hr after application and increased in severity over several days. However, necrosis was not observed when crude extracts of nonpathogenic strains were applied onto tuber slices. Presence of thaxtomin A from crude extracts of pathogenic S. turgidiscabies was identified by thin layer chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography. Nonpathgenic strains did not produce thaxtomin A in oatmeal broth. Inoculation of potato tuber slices with thaxtomin A partially purified from crude extract of a pathogenic S. turgidiscabies ST5 reproduce necrotic reaction suggesting that thaxtomin A is a pathogenicity determinant in S. turgidiscabies.

  • In speed skiing, aerodynamic forces play an important role in determining performance of the skier. To predict aerodynamic effects of the posture of the skier on alpine downhill skiing, we constructed equation of motion of the skier and performed the corresponding CFD simulations. Comparing drag and lift of three different skier postures, it has been shown that drag decreases significantly by tucking upper body to lower body and stretching arms forward. Also, aerodynamic lift which worked as downforce in standing posture worked upward in tuck posture, reducing friction force between snow and ski. This indicates that tuck posture have advantages over standing posture in dual mechanism, namely by reducing drag and also increasing lift. By this two-dimensional initial study we could reveal the general tendency of the aerodynamic force over the skier's body. This study not only provides a theoretical foundation for the athletes to understand the aerodynamic effects of skier postures but also shed a light on towards more accurate and rational three-dimensional CFD simulation of skiers in the near future study.

  • The present study was conducted to examine the reproductive performance of dairy cow at alpine area. 1,515 dairy cows were managemented at above 800m of sea level around the Dea-Gwan Ryeong in Kangweon-Do. The results at this study were as follows ; 1. The average first estrus was 105.0 days after pastruation. 2. The highest percentage ofpregnancy(26.4%) and parturation(27.6%) were obtained at September to November and June to August, respectively. 3. The rate of pregnancy was 61.0%. Pregnancy rates according to insemination times of 1, 2 and 3 were 60.8, 23.5 and 9.8%, respectively and insemination time per pregnancy was 1.64. 4. Ages of first inseminatin, pregnancy and parturition of heifer were 17.9, 18.6 and 27.7 months, respectively. 5. Time of postpartum pregnancy was 133.0 days after parturition, and pregnancy period and calving interval were 279.6 and 410.3 days, respectively. 6. Six ratio of offspring was 52.1% of female versus 47.9% of male, and the proportion of twins was 0.65%. 7. The proportions of normal parturition, stillbirth and abortion were 91.9, 2.2 and 5.9%, respectively.

  • Infertility and breeding status of Korean cows which are reared in a extensive alpine ranches of Daegwanryeong area was investigated. The results obtained were summarized as follows, 1. Infertility frequency of the cows was 25.9% against a total examined number of 675 heads, and was 17.6% against a total rearing number. 2. The distributions of infertile cows 44.6% of Granular vaginitis-like syndrome, 36% of repeat breeder, 8.6% of symptom of ovary, 6.8% of symptom of uterus and 4% of other symptoms. 3. • We investigated major plant communities and seed dispersal patterns in areas a(alt. 2,263 ~2,350m),b(alt. 2,350~2,420m), c(alt. 2,420m) with levels of a crater on mt. paektu. Thirty two species distributed around chunji consisted of 24 perennial herbs, 1 biennial herb and 7 alpine dwarf shurbs. Their fruit types were quite diverse; capsule(11), achene(10), grain(4), legume(2), follicle(2), schizocarp(2) and drupe(1). in area a, adjancent to the chunji(lake) water surface, gramineae sp., cyperaceae sp., chrysanthemum zawadskii and bistorta ochotensis were occured as members of the major plant communities. Species of gramineae and cyperaceae seem to have become dominant because their seeds float well. Astragalus membranaceus is legume and endures the winter cold and summer drought. in area c, alpine dwarf shrubs (e. g.rhododendron redowskianum, rhododendron aureum, empetrum nigrum) were dominant. In area c, compared to a and b, the weather is drier because of strong wind and lower water holding capacity of the soil. Therefore the pattern of plants distributing around chunji is different from that in western slope on mt.paektu. environmental factor such as wind, temperature and water may contribute to the pattern.
