  • Gas-Phase reactions of methyl and ethyl nitrites with anionic nucleophiles of SH-, F- and OH- are investigated theoretically at the MP2/6-311+G* level. The SN2 processes are all highly exothermic and proceed with a typ-icaI double-weIl reaction coordinate profile. The elimination reactions of methyl nitrite with SH- and F- are double-well energy surface processes, with stabilizedproduct complexes of NO-...H2S and NO-...HF, pro-ceeding by an E1 cb-like E2 mechanism. The $\beta-elimination$ of ethyl nitrite is an E2 type process. The $\alpha-elimi-nation$ reactions of methyl and ethyl nitrites with OH- have triple-well energy profiles of Elcb pathway with an $\alpha-carbanion$ intermediate which is stabilized bythe vicinal $nc\alpha-{\sigma}*o-N$ charge transfer interactions. CompIex-ation ofmethyl carbanion with HF seems to provide a stable intermediate within a triple-well energy profile of El cb channel in the reaction of F- with methyl nitrite.

  • The esterification of Ac-Tyr-OH was carried out in one-phase system containing ethanol by ${\alpha}$-chymotrypsin. The results of the esterification reaction are as follows. Chitin-${\alpha}$-chymotrypsin complex was found to be an effective catalyst for the esterlfication of Ac-Tyr-OH in ethanol organic solvent. The optimal conditions for the esterification were chitn/${\alpha}$-chymotrypsin ratio, 20(w/w); reaction temp., $35^{\circ}C$; reaction pH, 8.0; reaction time, 24 hrs. Also, addition of chitin in water/water-miscible organic solvent was effective for the stability of the enzyme. The esterification yield, Km and Vmax under optimal conditions were 93%, 3.093mM and 1.088mM/mg/hr, respectively.

  • The effect of aging heat treatment on microstructure evolution of the Ti-6Al-4Fe-0.25Si alloy with an initial microstructure of an elongated alpha was investigated. Aging treatments of the samples were carried out at $550^{\circ}C$ for up to 100 hours. The microstructure of the 5 hours heat-treated sample consisted of alpha grains, beta matrix and some TiFe intermetallic compounds that were precipitated from the beta matrix. Increasing the aging time to 10 hours, most of the beta matrix was decomposed to very fine alpha grains (${\sim}0.5{\mu}m$) and TiFe, and thus the volume fraction of the beta matrix was significantly decreased. EBSD analysis revealed that newly formed tertiary-alpha-grains in the vicinity of TiFe had high angle boundaries with respect to the primary and secondary alpha grains. As a result of these phase transformations during aging, the fraction of the alpha/alpha grain boundary was increased while that of the alpha/beta phase boundary was decreased.

  • Effect of surface roughness and microstructure of the specimen on tensile properties of Ni-Al bronze casting has been investigated. surface roughnesses of the tensile test specimen of interest are in range of 0.1 to 2.0 ${\mu}m$ in Ra obtained by changing machining conditions. Fracture of the Ni-Al bronze casting initiated at the surface and propagated in a brittle manner during tensile tests. Tensile elongation value of the casting was strongly dependent on the surface roughness range studied, while tensile and yield strengths were almost independent on it. The elongation value was almost constant up to the surface roughness of 1.0 ${\mu}m$ in Ra, and then decreased in a linear manner with an increase in Ra value up to 2.0 ${\mu}m$. However, tensile strength and hardness were strongly dependent on the microstructure, especially ${\alpha}$ phase fraction, and were decreased with increasing ${\alpha}$ phase fraction in microstructure. It is, therefore, recommended that decrease of surface roughness up to 1.0 ${\mu}m$ in Ra, shrinkage porosity and ${\alpha}$ phase are required in order to obtain good tensile properties for Ni-Al bronze casting.

  • The effect of high temperature gas nitrding (HTGN) on the surface microstructure in pure Ti was investigated. Two phases of TiN and $Ti_2N$ appeared at the outmost surface, and the wide ${\alpha}$-Ti layer was formed at the next layer. On the other hand, the interior region, where the nitrogen was not permeated, exhibited ${\alpha}$'phase. The outmost surface of TiN and $Ti_2N$ showed the maximum hardness of 1000Hv, while the interior ${\alpha}$'phase was ${\sim}350$ Hv. The permeation depth of nitrogen increased with increasing the gas nitriding temperature and time. The nitrogen concentration of the surface layer seems to be over 12.7% at $1100^{\circ}C$.

  • The effects of heat treatment time and cooling method on microstructure and mechanical property of Cu-22wt%Sn alloy were discussed. ${\alpha}+{\delta}$ mixed phase structure was obtained in air-cooled specimens after heat treatment at 775, 750, and $700^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. On the other hand, in water-cooled specimens, ${\alpha}+{\beta}^{\prime}$ martensite mixed phase was obtained. In the case of water-cooled specimens, the hardness value decreased with decreasing heat treatment temperature because the volume fraction of ${\alpha}$ phase with low hardness value increased as the heat treatment temperature decreased. In water-cooled specimen after heat treatment at $600^{\circ}C$, ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ martensite was formed instead of ${\beta}^{\prime}$ martensite. The hardness value of ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ martensite was lower than those of ${\beta}^{\prime}$ and ${\delta}$ phases.

  • A reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatogrphy (RP-HPLC) has been developed to analyze the metabolites of arachidonic acid based on the specificities of ultraviolet absorption of these various metabolites and is sensitive to the nanogram level. This procedure makes it possible to extract complex mixtures of eicosanoids efficiently with a single step and to analyze them simultaneously by RP-HPLC from biological samples using octadesylsilyl silica extraction column and $PGB_2$ as an internal standard. The cyclooxygenase products {prostaglandin $(PG)D_2,\;PGE_1,\;PGE_2,\;PGF_{1{\alpha}},\;PGF{2{\alpha}},\;6-keto-PGF_{1{\alpha}},$ and thromboxane $B_2(TXB_2)}$ and lipid peroxidation product, isoprostanes, of arachidonic acid were monitored by one isocratic HPLC system at 195 nm wavelength. The lipoxygenase products ${leukotriene(LT)B_4,\;LTC_4,\;LTD_4,$ and 5-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (5-HETE), 12-HETE, 15-HETE} were measured by another isocratic HPLC system at 280 nm for LTs and 235 nm for HETEs. This method provides a simple and reliable way to extract and assess quantitatively the final arachidonic acid metabolites.

  • Grain size of the $\alpha$ phase is computed during isothermal forging of the TC6 aerofoil blade, by combining FE with the Yada's model of grain size. The present results illustrate the grain size and distribution of the $\alpha$ phase during isothermal forging of the TC6 aerofoil blade' in detail. The computed results show that height reduction, deformation temperature, hammer velocity and friction have significant effect on distribution of the equivalent strain, and that height reduction, deformation temperature and hammer velocity have more significant effect on grain size of the $\alpha$ phase than friction between billet and die.

  • Zinc silicate ($Zn_2SiO_4$) has been identified as a suitable host material for a wide variety of luminescent activators, such as transition metal and rare earth elements. In particular, manganese-activated $Zn_2SiO_4$ exhibits highly efficient photoluminescenceand cathodoluminescence, which allows this material to be used in fluorescent lamps and display applications. In this study, we investigated the green and yellow luminescence from Mn-doped $Zn_2SiO_4$ thin films that were synthesized using radio frequency magnetron sputtering followed by annealing at $600{\sim}1,200^{\circ}C$ The refractive index of the $Zn_2SiO_4$: Mn films showed normal dispersion behavior. It was found that the $Zn_2SiO_4$: Mn films annealed at $800^{\circ}C$ ossessed a mixture of alpha and beta phases. The obtained photoluminescence spectrum consisted of two emission bands centered at 525 nm in the green range and 574 nm in the yellow range. The green luminescence originates from the divalent Mn ions in alpha phase of $Zn_2SiO_4$, while the yellow luminescence comes from the divalent Mn ions in beta phase. The films annealed at and above $900^{\circ}C$ xhibited only the alpha phase. The broad PL excitation band was observed ranging from 220 to 300 nm with a maximum at around 243 nm.
