Objectives : The aim of this study was to examine the effect of manual acupuncture at the bilateral $LI_4$, $ST_{36}$ and $LR_3$ on normal human every 3 minute time interval by using power spectrum analysis. Methods : 25 healthy volunteers participated in this study. 32 channel EEG(Electroencephalogram) measurements were carried out before, during and after acupuncture treatments. In this study, power spectrum was used as a measure of complexity. Statistical analysis was performed using repeated measure ANOVA and Bonferroni method. Results : 1. In acupuncture group, Mean HRT, PSI, Normalized HF decreased significantly. SDNN, Ln(TP), Ln(LF), Ln(VLF), Normalized LF and LF/HF ratio increased significantly. RMSSD, Ln(HF) were not affected. 2. In sham acupuncture group, all indicators were not affected. 3. In control group, mean HRT, Ln(TP) decreased significantly. SDNN, RMSSD, PSI, Ln(LF), Ln(HF), Ln(VLF), normalized LF, normalized HF and LF/HF ratio were not affected. Conclusions : This results suggest that manipulation needling of 6 acupoints induced increase of delta, theta, beta waves. Both manipulation and simple needling induced decrease of alpha wave during 12~15 time intervals.

Emotional expression is universal and emotional state impacts important areas in our life. Until now, analyzing the acquired EEG signals under circumstances caused by invoked feelings and efforts to define their emotional state have been made mainly by psychologists based on the results. But, recently emotion-related information was released by research results that it is possible to identify mental activity through measuring and analyzing the brain EEG signals. So, this study has compared and analyzed emotional expressions of human by using brain waves. To get EEG difference for a particular emotion, we showed specific subject images to the people for changing emotions that peace, joy, sadness and stress, etc. After measured EEG signals were converged into frequence domain by FFT signal process, we have showed EEG changes in emotion as a result of the performance analyzing each respective power spectrum of delta, theta, alpha, beta and gamma waves.
This study was performed with 5 subjects and used three kinds of music and vibroacoustic stimuli wave based upon each kinds of music. Executing music stimulation, vibro tactile and acoustic wave stimulation to human body were performed. Then measured brain waves were analyzed under each condition including before stimulation, stimulation 1, and stimulation 2. Effects by stimulation results could be studied with experiments and summarized results are followings. 1. It may be concluded that effects on brain waves by music and vibroacoustic stimulation might differ under different situations such as stimulation types with vibroacoustic equipment, human body and mental conditions when measuring, etc.. 2. During stimuli by using music A, B, and C, the effect of $\alpha$ wave, $\beta$ wave, and SMR wave power values show same tendency to the subject c but music C had very different tendency during vibroacoustic stimuli. 3. During vibroacoustic stimuli by applying the signals of music C, because SMR wave power value was continually increased with consistency comparing to Bst, this can be estimated that an application of inducing mind concentration condition would be possible under relaxed body and mind conditions. 4. To secure data significance, all measured data need to be tested statistically whether data would be interrelated or not.
It has been known that RA, one of major constituents of Perilla frutescens which has been used as a traditional folk remedy for sedation in oriental countries, shows the anxiolytic-like and sedative effects. This study was performed to know whether RA may enhance pentobarbital-induced sleep through ${\gamma}-aminobutyric$ acid $(GABA)_A-ergic$ systems in rodents. RA (0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mg/kg, p.o.) reduced the locomotor activity in mice. RA decreased sleep latency and increased the total sleep time in pentobarbital (42 mg/kg, i.p.)-induced sleeping mice. RA also increased sleeping time and number of falling sleep mice after treatment with sub-hypnotic pentobarbital (28 mg/kg, i.p.). In electroencephalogram (EEG) recording, RA (2.0 mg/kg) not only decreased the counts of sleep/wake cycles and REM sleep, but also increased the total and NREM sleep in rats. The power density of NREM sleep showed the increase in ${\delta}-waves$ and the decrease in ${\alpha}-waves$. On the other hand, RA (0.1, 1.0 and $10{\mu}g/ml$) increased intracellular $Cl^-$ influx in the primary cultured hypothalamic cells of rats. RA (p.o.) increased the protein expression of glutamic acid decarboxylase ($GAD_{65/67}$) and $GABA_A$ receptors subunits except ${\beta}1$ subunit. In conclusion, RA augmented pentobarbital-induced sleeping behaviors through $GABA_A-ergic$ transmission. Thus, it is suggested that RA may be useful for the treatment of insomnia.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of functional bedding of ceravida recovery materials on muscle fatigue, brain waves, and heat in the cervical spine before and after sleep. The subjects of the study were 12 women in their 50s or older in D Metropolitan City who complained of insomnia due to sleep disorders and cervical pain. The results of this study first showed that functional bedding lowered muscle tension. Second, the skin temperature of cervical spine increased statistically significantly for both functional and general bedding. Third, there was a statistically significant difference in EEG(alpha, beta, theta, delta) of functional bedding. Through these results, it is considered that functional bedding of ceravida recovery material has sufficient effect on sleep recovery technology.
In this paper, we propose an EEG-based response time prediction method during a yes/no cognitive decision task. In the experimental task, a subject goes through responding of visual stimulus, understanding the given problem, controlling hand motions, and hitting a key. Considering the subject's varying brain activities, we model subjects' mental states with defining CT (cut time), ST (selection time), and RP (repeated period). Based on the assumption between ST and RT in the mental model, we predict subjects' response time by detection of selection time. To recognize the subjects' selection time ST, we extract 3 types of feature from the filtered brain waves at frequency bands of $\alpha$, $\beta$, ${\gamma}$ waves in 4 electrode pairs combined by spatial relationships. From the extracted features, we construct specific rules for each subject and meta rules including common factors in all subjects. Applying the ST detection rules to 8 subjects gives 83% success rates and also shows that the subjects will hit a key in 0.73 seconds after ST detected. To validate the detection rules and parameters, we test the rules for 2 subjects among 8 and discuss about the experimental results. We expect that the proposed detection method can be a basic technology for brain-computer-interface by combining with left/right hand movement or yes/no discrimination methods.
Objectives: Stage 1 sleep provides important information regarding interpretation of nocturnal polysomnography, particularly sleep onset. It is a short transition period from wakeful consciousness to sleep. The lack of prominent sleep events characterizing stage 1 sleep is a major obstacle in automatic sleep stage scoring. In this study, utilization of simultaneous EEG and EOG processing and analyses to detect stage 1 sleep automatically were attempted. Methods: Relative powers of the alpha waves and the theta waves were calculated from spectral estimation. A relative power of alpha waves less than 50% or relative power of theta waves more than 23% was regarded as stage 1 sleep. SEM(slow eye movement) was defined as the duration of both-eye movement ranging from 1.5 to 4 seconds, and was also regarded as stage 1 sleep. If one of these three criteria was met, the epoch was regarded as stage 1 sleep. Results were compared to the manual rating results done by two polysomnography experts. Results: A total of 169 epochs were analyzed. The agreement rate for stage 1 sleep between automatic detection and manual scoring was 79.3% and Cohen’s Kappa was 0.586 (p<0.01). A significant portion (32%) of automatically detected stage 1 sleep included SEM. Conclusion: Generally, digitally-scored sleep staging shows accuracy up to 70%. Considering potential difficulty in stage 1 sleep scoring, accuracy of 79.3% in this study seems to be strong enough. Simultaneous analysis of EOG differentiates this study from previous ones which mainly depended on EEG analysis. The issue of close relationship between SEM and stage 1 sleep raised by Kinnari remains a valid one in this study.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of virtual reality bowling on emotional changes using EEG (Electroencephalogram). Sixteen bowling players who have at least three years of experiences in bowling participated in this study. Their aged ranged from 26 to 35 years old with a mean age of 29.6 years. The frontal lobes (Fp2-Fp1, F4-F3, F8-F7) of each player were measured while subjects were performing five games of bowling. And after performing every frame, their emotion was measured immediately with Visual Analogue Scale. The data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance to test differences in the alpha value of each region of the frontal lobes. The dependent variable is the alpha power of the cerebral asymmetry. The results showed that players who scored a strike showed higher VAS values than those who missed the spares or cleared the spares; those who cleared spares showed higher VAS values than those who missed spares In addition, with respect to frontal R-L asymmetry score, the alpha-wave of the left frontal lobe was activated when scoring a strike and clearing spares and the alpha-wave of the right frontal lobe was activated when missing spares. In conclusion, the results of this study demonstrated that success or achievement in competition gives rise to positive emotions and vice versa. This study neurophysiologically proved that performance outcomes during a competition directly influence players' emotion and brain waves.

Nonlinear flow characteristics of a hydrofoil running under the free surface are investigated based on potential flow theory using singularity distribution techniques. Following Hess & Smith's method[12], sources and vortices are distributed on the surface of the foil and Rankine sources are distributed at a distance above the undisturbed free surface to solve the nonlinear free surface waves(so called Raised Panel Method). Using the linearized Neumann-Kelvin solution, the conversed solutions which rigidly satisfy the nonlinear free surface condition is obtained through an iterative technique. It is validated that the nonlinear solutions are compared with Duncan's experimental results(NACA 0012, $\alpha=5^{\circ}$), showing good correlations with each other. At a very shallow submergence and a very high speed the converged solutions are obtained. As the speed increases higher, it is shown that the difference between the nonlinear and linear solutions are trivial. Finally, the effects of the camber and thickness on the nonlinear flow characteristics of the foil are investigated.
