Effects of alloying elements on the mechanical properties of 3.60wt%C-2.50wt%Si ductile cast iron with annealing and normalizing were investigated. Yield and tensile strengths were increased from 278 and 415 MPa to 316 and 440 MPa respectively as manganese content was increased upto 0.45wt% while elongation was decreased from 24.2 to 5.0%. The formers were increased and the latter was decreased with the increased amount of copper, molybdenum or nickel added. Meanwhile the tensile strength of annealed specimen was increased with the amount of alloying elements added, it was decreased by annealing. It was increased greatly by normalizing and the amount of alloying elements added except molybdenum.
This present study deals with the effect of micro-alloying elements and transformation temperature on the correlation of microstructure and tensile properties of low-carbon steels with ferrite-pearlite microstructure. Six kinds of low-carbon steel specimens were fabricated by adding micro-alloying elements of Nb, Ti and V, and by varying isothermal transformation temperature. Ferrite grain size of the specimens containing mirco-alloying elements was smaller than that of the Base specimens because of pinning effect by the precipitates of carbonitrides at austenite grain boundaries. The pearlite interlamellar spacing and cementite thickness decreased with decreasing transformation temperature, while the pearlite volume fraction was hardly affected by micro-alloying elements and transformation temperature. The room-temperature tensile test results showed that the yield strength increased mostly with decreasing ferrite grain size and elongation was slightly improved as the ferrite grain size and pearlite interlamellar spacing decreased. All the specimens exhibited a discontinuous yielding behavior and the yield point elongation of the Nb4 and TiNbV specimens containing micro-alloying elements was larger than that of the Base specimens, presumably due to repetitive pinning and release of dislocation by the fine precipitates of carbonitrides.
In this study dual-phase steels with different ferrite grain size and martensite fraction were fabricated by varying micro-alloying elements and intercritical anneling temperatures, and then the tensile properties were investigated in terms of yield and tensile strengths, elongation, and yield ratio. The addition of micro-alloying elements reduced ferrite grain size, and the increased intercritial transformation tempeature increased the martensite fracton. The tensile test results showed that yield and tensile strengths of all the steel specimens increased with increasing the martensite fraction. However, the elongation and yield ratio were differently changed according to variations in the morphology and carbon content of martensite, ferrite grain size, and precipitates resulting from the addition of micro-alloying elements and intercritical annealing.
The present study deals with the effects of micro-alloying elements such as Ni, V, and Ti on the recrystallization behavior of carbon steels at different strain rates. Eight steel specimens were fabricated by varying the chemical composition and reheating temperature; then, a high-temperature compressive deformation test was conducted in order to investigate the relationship of the microstructure and the recrystallization behavior. The specimens containing micro-alloying elements had smaller prior austenite grain sizes than those of the other specimens, presumably due to the pinning effect of the formation of carbonitrides and AlN precipitates at the austenite grain boundaries. The high-temperature compressive deformation test results indicate that dynamic recrystallization behavior was suppressed in the specimens with micro-alloying elements, particularly at increased strain rate, because of the pinning effect of precipitates, grain boundary dragging and lattice misfit effects of solute atoms, although the strength increased with increasing strain rate.
Mechanical alloying(MA) process using elemental powders followed by hot pressing has been applied to some intermetallic alloy system containing ferromagnetic elements, such as NiAl and $FeSi_2$. A modified thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) technique was used to investigate the degree of alloying in milled powders and hot consolidated specimens as well as heat-treated bulk specimens. It is shown that the measurement of Curie temperatures in MA intermetallic powders and consolidated specimens containing ferromagnetic components, when determined as a function of milling and heat treatment parameters, can give some insight into the progress and mechanism of alloying.
The glass formation behavior was investigated in the melt spun Zr-Ti-Cu-Ni-X (X=B, P and Si) ribbons. The magnitude of supercooled liquid region of Zr-Ti-Cu-Ni alloy increased with an addition of alloying element. The glass transition temperature and the crystallization temperature increased and the magnitude of supercooled liquid region decreased with increasing the content of alloying elements. The largest supercooled liquid region was observed in the Si containing alloy. This is believed to be due to the dense atom packing with the optimum atomic size ratio of constituent elements.
To enhance the machinability of the austenite stainless alloys, Mn and S were added to form MnS in the austenite matrix. Recently, Ca is also added to increase machinability. The alloying elements, such as C, Mn, S, Ca, and Al, are known to affect machinability, but those roles are not well understood. In this study, the ingots, controlled of alloying elements, C, Mn, S, Ca, Al, were prepared in the 304 stainless steel. The relationship between microstructure and machinability was compared to understand the role of alloying elements. It was proved that Mn and S enhanced machinability but C reduced it by analyzing cutting force on machining in the lathe. The alloying elements, Ca and Al, made a complex oxide compound of Mn-S-Ca-Al-Si-O, which results in increasing tool life. The ferrite volume fraction was changed with alloying elements and the effect of the ferrite fraction on machining was also discussed.
A Study on microstructure and elevated temperature strength of 18Cr-2Mo ferritic stainless steel castings strengthened by alloying small amounts of titanium and carbon, has been conducted. The morphology of titanium carbides showed spherical in shape and their distribution depended on the amount of alloying elements. Maximum density ($7{\times}10^5/cm^2$) of titanium carbides has been formed in the alloy containing 2.0 wt.% titanium and 0.5 wt.% carbon as alloying elements and the size of carbide particles is in the range of 0.5 to $3.0\;{\mu}m$. High temperature tensile and fatigue strength of this alloy were the highest among the alloys tested in this research. The fracture mode of the alloys containing alloying elements less that 2.0 wt.% titanium and 0.5 wt.% carbon showed intercrystalline fracture at room temperature, while the alloys containing higher amounts of alloying elements showed transcrystalline fracture. All of the alloys showed creep or ductile rupture mode at elevated temperature.
440A martensitic stainless steels which were modified with reduced carbon content(~0.5%) and addition of small amount of nickel, vanadium, tungsten and molybdenum were manufactured. Effects of alloying elements and tempering temperatures on the uniform corrosion in the solution of lN H2S04 were investigated through the electrochemical polarization test. When tempering temperature is constant, corrosion current density in active-passive transition point, Icorr, decreased a little with an increase of austenitizing temperature. In addition to this, when austenitizing temperature is constant, longer holding time showed a little lower Icorr and Ipass, passive current density. And when austenitized at $1050^{\circ}C$ and tempered in a range of $350{\sim}750^{\circ}C$, best anti-corrosion properties were obtained at $350^{\circ}C$ tempering temperature while worst at $450^{\circ}C$ or $550^{\circ}C$. The specimens tempered at below $450^{\circ}C$ and above $550^{\circ}C$, similar and good anti-corrosion characteristics were obtained regardless of alloying elements added, showing anti-corrosion characteristics are influenced more by tempering temperature than by alloying elements.
440A martensitic stainless steels which were modified with reduced carbon content(~0.5wt.%) and addition of small amount of vanadium, tungsten and molybdenum 0.4wt.%, 0.4wt.% and 0.68wt.% respectively were manufactured. Effects of alloying elements and tempering temperatures on the intergranular corrosion were investigated through the method of DL-EPR(Double-electrochemical potentiodynamic reactivation). It was thought that the highest DOS(Degree of sensitization) of specimens was obtained at the tempering temperature of $450^{\circ}C$ regardless of types of alloy because of the precipitation of Cr7C3. Addition of vanadium lowered DOS a little above the tempering temperature of $550^{\circ}C$. It was considered to be effected by precipitation of VC carbides. Intergranular corrosion was influenced more by tempering temperature than by alloying elements of V, W and Mo.
