The microstructure and mechanical properties of $TiB_2/Si$ nanocomposites based on the Ti-Si-B system, consolidated by spark plasma sintering of mechanically alloyed activated nanopowders, have been characterized. Mechanical Alloying was carried out in a planetary ball mill for 180 min with 350 rev $min^{-1}$. The powders were pressed in vacuum at a pressure of 60 MPa, generating a maximum temperature in the graphite mould of $1400^{\circ}C$. Analysis of the synthesized nanocomposites by SEM, XRD and TEM showed them to consist of $TiB_2$ second phase, sub-micron in size, with no third phase. Composites consolidated from powders mechanically alloyed from an initial elemental powder mix of 0.3 mol Si, 0.7 mol Ti, and 2.0 mol B achieved the best relative density (97%) and bending strength (774 MPa); the highest Vickers hardness of 14.7 GPa was achieved for the 0.1-0.9-2.0 mol starting composition.
Recently, one of the hydrogen production methods has attracted using dense metallic membrane. It has high hydrogen permeation and selectivity which hardly could adopt industrial product because of high cost, hydrogen embrittlment and thermal stability. Meanwhile, vanadium has high hydrogen solubility and it use to instead of Pd-Ag amorphous membrane. Aluminum carried out blocking hydrogen diffusion on grain boundary therefore protecting hydrogen embrittlement. Most of dense metallic membrane is solution diffusion mechanism. The solution diffusion mechanism was very similar hydrogen storing steps such as steps of metal hydride. Thus, V-Al composites were fabricated to use hydrogen induced mechanical alloying. The fabricated V-Al composites were characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS and simultaneous TG/DSC analyses. The hydrogenation behaviors were evaluated using a Sievert's type automatic PCT apparatus. The hydrogenation behaviors of V-Al composites was evaluated too low hydrogen stored capacity and fast hydrogenation kinetics. In PCI results, V-Al composites had low hydrogen solubility, in spite of that, hydrogen kinetics was calculated very fast and hydrogen absorption/desorption contents were same capacity.
The efects of mechanical aloying conditions and the type of reducing agent on the solid state reductionof haematite $Fe_2O_3$ have been investigated at room temperature. Aluminium titanium zinc and copper were used as reducing agent. Nanocomposites of metal-oxide in which oxide particles with nano size were dispersed in Fe matrix were obtained by mechanical alloying of $Fe_2O_3$ with aluminium and titanium respectively However the reduction of $Fe_2O_3$ by coppe was not occurred Composite materials of iron with $Al_2O_3$ and $TiO_2$ were obtained from the system of $Fe_2O_3-Al$ and $Fe_2O_3-Ti$ after ball milling for 20 hrs and 30 hrs respectively. And the system of $Fe_2O_3-Zn$ resulted in the formationof FeO with ZnO after ball milling of 120 hrs. The final grain sizes of iron estimated by X-ray diffraction line-width measurement were in the ranges of 24~33 nm.
The hardenability of alloyed ductile cast irons was studied for 54 different alloy compositions obtained from eight commercial and laboratory foundries. The alloying elements investigated for their effects on hardenability were Si(2.0 to 3.0%), Mn(0.0 to 0.8%), Mo(0.0 to 0.6%), Cu(0.0 to 1.5%), and Ni(0.0 to 1.5%). Two hardenability criteria, a first-pearlite hardenability criterion and a half-hard hardenability criterion, were used to determine hardenability of ductile irons. Prediction models for each hardenability criterion were developed by multiple regression analysis and were well agreed with previous experimental results. Molybdenum was the most potent hardenability promoting element followed by manganese, copper and nickel ; silicon had little effect on hardenability and reduced the hardenability as silicon content increased. When alloying elements were presented in combination, strong synergistic effects on the hardenability were observed especially between molybdenum, copper and nickel. The hardenability of ductile iron was strongly influenced by austenitizing temperature. Increasing austenitizing temperature up to $955^{\circ}C$, hardenability increased gradually but decreasing rate and then decreased as temperature increased above $955^{\circ}C$. Unless reducing segregation by very long-time annealing treatment, the hardenability of ductile iron was not significantly influenced by segregation of alloying elements.
The structure and mechanical properties of the extruded specimens were investigated in rapid solidified Al-(1, 3, 5) Cr alloys after mechanical alloying. Finer lamellar microstructure could no longer be resolved in the bars obtained by extrusion of the spherical particles after 200 min. of processing time. The structure of extruded bars are highly depended on the processing time of splats. The isothermal annealing of the extruded bars showed that all the alloys had good thermal stability up to $400^{\circ}C$ and did not show the recrystallization phenomena. Severe working of Al-(1, 3, 5) Cr splats produced a very fine grain size and substructural strengthening (high dislocation density and fine grain size). Effects of mechanical alloying on the thermal stability of the extruded bars Al-(1, 3, 5) Cr alloys decreases, with increasing Cr content. But the ultimate tensile Strength in the extruded bars increases with increasing Cr content.
In order to evaluate the effect of alloying elements (Nb and Sn) on the wear resistance of advanced Zr fuel claddings, sliding wear tests have been performed in room temperature air and water and these results were compared with those of commercial alloys such as Zircaloy-4, A and B alloys. As a result, the advanced Zr fuel claddings have a similar wear resistance compared with the commercial alloys. The wear resistance of the advanced Zr fuel claddings is closely releted to the content of Nb and Sn even though the effects of transition elements are involved in deforming wear properties. In the tested specimens with similar Sn content, wear volume became down to a minimum at $0.4\;wt\;\%$ Nb, then rapidly increased at 1.0 wt Nb. This behavior results in the variation of grain size with alloying contents. But Sn did not have a significant effect on the wear volume of advanced Zr fuel claddings below $1.1\;wt\%$. The relationship between alloying elements and wear behaviour was evaluated and discussed using material compatibility factor.
The effects of risering design and alloying element on the formation of defects such as external depression, primary and secondary shrinkage cavities in ductile cast iron were investigated. Two types of risering design for the cylindrically step-wise specimen, No. 1(progressive solidification) and No. 2(directional solidification) risering designs, were prepared and six different alloy compositions were casted. In the No. 1 risering design, external depression or primary shrinkage cavities due to liquid contraction were observed in all the specimens from SG 10 to SG 60. The defects caused by liquid contraction seemed to be more affected by risering design than alloying elements. The secondary shrinkage cavities were also observed in all the specimens but a swollen surface was not observed in all the castings. The primary shrinkage cavities were located right under the top surface or connected to the top surface, and were characterized by smooth surfaces. On the other hand, the secondary shrinkage cavities were positioned in the thermal center of the specimen steps 3 and 4, and characterized by rough surfaces. In the No. 2 risering design, no external depression or primary shrinkage cavities due to liquid contraction were observed in all the specimens from SG 10 to SG 60. However, the secondary shrinkage cavities were formed in the thermal center of specimens SG 40, 50 and 60. Like the No. 1 risering design, a swollen surface was not observed in all the castings.
Nickel silicides ($Ni_5$Si$_2$, Ni$_2$Si and NiSi) have been synthesized by mechanical alloying (MA) of Ni-27.9at.9at%Si, Ni-33.3at% and Ni-50.0at% powder mixtures, respectively. From in situ thermal analysis, eash citical milling period for the formation of the three phases was observed to be 40.2, 34.9 and 57.5 min, at which there was a rapid increase in temperature. This indicates that rapid, self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) reactions were observed to produce the three phases during room-temperature high-energy ball milling of elemental powders. Each Ni silicide, Ni and Si, however, coexisted for an extended milling time even after the critical milling period. The powders mechanically alloyed after the critical period showed the rapid increase in microhardness. The Hv values were found to be higher than 1000kgf/mm$^2$. The formation of nickel silicides by mechanical alloying and the relevant reaction rates appeared to be influenced by the critical milling period and the heat of formation of the products involved ($Ni_5$Si$_2$$\rightarrow$-43.1kJ/mol.at., Ni$_2$Si$\rightarrow$-47.6kJ/mol.at., NiSi$\rightarrow$-42.4kJ/mol.at).
Mechanical alloying of $Ni_3Al$ and $Y_2O_3$ added ODS $Ni_3Al$ from elemental powders was investigated by the X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimeter, transmission electron microscopy and optical microscopy. The steady states of $Ni_3Al$ and ODS $Ni_3Al$ powders were reached after mechanical alloying with the condition of the ball-to-powder input ratio of 20:1 for 20 hours and 10 hours, respectively. The addition of nano-sized $Y_2O_3$ particles enhanced cold working and fracture, and subsequently accelerated MA of $Ni_3Al$ powders. DSC results of MAed $Ni_3Al$ powders showed four exothermic peaks at 14$0^{\circ}C$, 234$^{\circ}C$, 337$^{\circ}C$ and 385$^{\circ}C$. From the high temperature X-ray diffraction analysis, it was concluded that the peaks were resulted from the recovery solution of unalloyed Al in Ni, the formation of intermediate phase NiAl, and $LI_2$ ordering of MAed $Ni_3Al$ powders.
