Effect of Al Addition on Fatigue Properties of Austenitic Fe-25Mn-Al-0.5C steels (오스테나이트계 Fe-25Mn-Al-0.5C강의 피로성질에 미치는 Al 첨가의 영향)

  • The effect of Al addition on the fatigue properties of austenitic Fe-25Mn-Al-0.5C steels was studied. When Al was not added to the Fe-25Mn 0.5C steel, the strain induced ${\varepsilon}$ martensites, deformation twins and slip bands were formed during fatigue deformation. When 2wt% of Al was added to the steel, the deformation twins and slip bands were formed during fatigue deformation. When 5wt% of Al was added, only slip bands were formed. In low cycle fatigue test, the alloys containing 0wt% and 2wt%Al showed the cyclic hardening due to ${\varepsilon}$ martensites and deformation twins, resulting in shorter fatigue lives than the alloy containing 5wt%Al. In fatigue crack propagation test, the alloy without Al showed the highest crack propagation rate. The fracture surface of the alloy without Al was flat, whereas that of the alloy with 2% or 5%Al was rough. The ${\Delta}K_{th}$, values of the alloys with 0%, 2% and 5%Al were 16, 17.5, and $20.5MPam^{1/2}$, respectively.

A Brief Review of κ-Carbide in Fe-Mn-Al-C Model Alloys

  • The multiple length scale analysis of previously designed Fe-Mn-Al-C based low-density model alloys reveals the difference in ordered ${\kappa}-carbide$, $(Fe,Mn)_3AlC_x$, between Fe-25Mn-16Al-5.2C (at%) alloy and Fe-3Mn-10Al-1.2C (at%) alloy. For the former alloy composition consisting of fully austenite grains, ${\kappa}-carbide$ showed majorly cuboidal and minorly pancake morphology and its chemical composition was not changed through aging for 24 h and 168 h at $600^{\circ}C$. Meanwhile, for the isothermally annealed ferritic alloy system for 1 hr at 500 and $600^{\circ}C$, the dramatic change in the chemical composition of needle-shape ${\kappa}-carbide$, $(Fe,Mn)_3(Fe,Al)C_x$, was found. Here we address that the compositional fluctuations in the vicinity of the carbides are significantly controlled by abutting phase, either austenite or ferrite. Namely, the cooperative ordering of carbon and Al is an important factor contributing to carbide formation in the high-Mn and high-Al alloyed austenitic steel, while the carbon and Mn for the low-Mn and high Al alloyed ferritic steel.

IMPROVEMENT EFFECTS OF ELECTROCHEMICAL STABILITY OF MAGNETIC MATERIALS FOR PROSTHETIC DENTISTRY (치과보철용 자석재료의 전기화학적 안정성 개선효과)

  • Statement of problem: Dental magnetic materials have been applied to removable prosthetic appliances, maxillofacial prostheses, obturator and dental implant but they still have some problems such as low corrosion resistance in oral environments. Purpose: To increase the corrosion resistance of dental magnetic materials, surfaces of Sm-Co and Nd-Fe-B based magnetic materials were plated with TiN and sealed with stainless steels. Materials and methods : Surfaces of Sm-Co and Nd-Fe-B based magnetic materials were plated with TiN and sealed with stainless steels, and then three kinds of electrochemical corrosion test were performed in 0.9% NaCl solution; potentiodynamic, potentiostatic, and electrochemical impedance test. From this study, corrosion behavior, amount of elements released, mean average surface roughness values, the changing of retention force, and magnetic force values were measured comparing with control group of non-coated magnetic materials. Results: The values of surface roughness of TiN coated Sm-Co and TiN coated Nd-Fe-B based magnetic materials were lower than those of non coated Sm-Co and Nd-Fe-B alloy. From results of potentiodynamic test, the passive current density of TiN coated Sm-Co alloy were smaller than those of TiN coated Nd-Fe-B alloy and non coated alloys in 0.9% NaCl solution. From results of potentiostatic and electrochemical impedance test, the surface stability of the TiN coated Sm-Co alloy was more drastically increased than that of the TiN coated Nd-Fe-B alloy and non-coated alloy. The retention and magnetic force after and before corrosion test did not change in the case of TiN coated magnetic alloy sealed with stainless steel. Conclusion: It is considered that the corrosion problem and improvement for surface stability of dental magnetic materials could be solved by ion plating with TiN on the surface of dental magnetic materials and by sealing with stainless steels.

Characteristics of Precipitation Hardened Extra Low Carbon Steels (석출강화형 극저탄소강의 특성에 대한 고찰)

  • Conventional bake-hardenable(BH) steels should be annealed at higher temperatures because of the addition of Ti or/and Nb which forms carbides and raises recrystallization start temperature. In this study, the development of new BH steels without Ti or Nb addition has been reviewed. The new BH steels have nearly same mechanical properties as the conventional BH steels even though it is annealed at lower temperature. The steels also show smaller deviation of the mechanical properties than that of the conventional BH steels because of the conarol of solute carbon content during steel making processes. The deviation of mechanical properties in conventional BH steels is directly dependent on the deviation of solute carbon which is greatly influenced by the amount of the carbide formers in conventional BH steels. Less alloy addition in the newly developed BH steels gives economical benefits. By taking the advantage of sulfur and/or nitrogen which scarenge in Interstitial-Free or conventional BH steels, fine manganese sulfides or nano size copper sulfides were designed to precipitate, and result in refined ferrite grains. Aluminum nitrides used as a precipitation hardening element in the developed steels were also and resull in fine and well dispersed. As a result, the developed steels with less production cost and reduced deviation of mechanical properties are under commercial production. Note that the developed BH steels are registered as a brand name of MAFE(R) and/or MAF-E(R).

Effect of Alloying Elements of Mn and Ni on the Pitting Corrosion Resistance of 22Cr Lean Duplex Stainless Steel (22Cr 린 듀플렉스 스테인리스강의 공식저항성에 미치는 Mn과 Ni 첨가의 영향)

  • Duplex stainless steels have the dual microstructure of austenite and ferrite phases. This steel exhibits generally a high corrosion resistance and higher mechanical strength compared with austenitic stainless steels. The steels used in the investigation have the chemical composition of Fe-22Cr-xNi-yMn-0.2N in which the contents of Ni and Mn were varied with maintaining the equal [Ni/Cr] equivalent. The fraction of ferrite phase was increased with the increase of annealing temperature. The impact factor of Mn element on the [Ni] equivalent was amended on the basis of the results of the investigation. 4Mn-2Ni alloy showed the highest pitting corrosion resistance. The fraction ratio, grain size and misorientation angle between grains were measured, and the correlation with pitting potential was investigated.

  • Environmental fatigue of the metallic components in light water reactors has been the subject of extensive research and regulatory interest in Korea and abroad. Especially, it was one of the key domestic issues for the license renewal of operating reactors and licensing of advanced reactors during the early 2000s. To deal with the environmental fatigue issue domestically, a systematic test program has been initiated and is still underway. The materials tested were SA508 Gr.1a low alloy steels, 316LN stainless steels, cast stainless steels, and an Alloy 690 and 52M weld. Through tests and subsequent analysis, the mechanisms of reduced low cycle fatigue life have been investigated for those alloys. In addition, the effects of temperature, dissolved oxygen level, and dissolved hydrogen level on low cycle fatigue behaviors have been investigated. In this paper, the test results and key analysis results are briefly summarized. Finally, an on-going test program for hot-bending of 347 stainless steel is introduced.

Effect of Alloying Elements Si, S, Cu, Sn, and Ni on Oxidation of Low Carbon Steels between 1050 and 1180℃ in Air (저탄소강의 대기중 1050~1180℃의 산화에 미치는 합금원소 Si, S, Cu, Sn, Ni의 영향)

  • Low carbon steels were oxidized isothermally at 1050 and $1180^{\circ}C$ for 4 hr in air in order to determine the effect of alloying elements Si, S, Cu, Sn, and Ni on oxidation. For oxidation resistance of low carbon steels, the beneficial elements were Si, Cu, and Ni, whereas the harmful elements were S and Sn. The most active alloying element, Si, was scattered inside the oxide scale, at the scale-alloy interface, and as an internal oxide precipitate. The relatively noble elements such as Cu and Ni tended to weakly segregate at the scale-alloy interface. Sulfur and Sn were weakly, uniformly distributed inside the oxide scale. Excessively thick, non-adherent scales containing interconnected pores formed at $1180^{\circ}C$.

  • The use of anti-corrosive oil (AC) is inevitable for production of industrial steels to prevent corrosion. The AC is degreased before application of steels, which crucially effects on final products, such as automobile, electricity etc. However, qualitative/quantitative evaluation of degreasing performance are steal insufficient. In this study, degreasing performance of anti-corrosive oil on steel have been studied through X-ray photon spectroscopy (XPS) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Commercial automotive steels (AMS) are coated with 4 different anti-corrosive oils (namely AC1-AC4). In XPS, intensity of C1s peak remained after degreasing indirectly indicates incomplete degreasing. Thus, higher C1s peak intensity means less effective degreasing by degreasing agent. peak intensity of C1s peak shows opposite tendency of peak intensity of O1s. We found that EIS analysis is not applicable to mild steel (such as AMS1) due to corrosion during measurement. However, alloy steel can be fully analyzed by EIS and XPS depth profile.

Atomic Scale Investigation of TRIP Steels (변태 유기 소성강(TRIP steel)의 미세구조와 원자 단위 분석)

  • In this study, microstructure and distribution of alloy elements were investigated in thermo-mechanically processed C-Mn-Si transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) steels. The microstructures of TRIP steels were investigated by using advanced analysis techniques, such as three dimensional atom probe tomography (3D-APT). At first, the microstructure was observed by using TEM. TEM results revealed that microstructure of C-Mn-Si TRIP steel was composed of ferrite, bainte, and retained austenite. 3D-APT was used to characterize atomic-scale partitioning of added elements at the phase interface. In the retained austenite phase, Ti and B were enriched with C. However, there was no fluctuation of Mn and Si concentration across the interface. Through these analysis techniques, the advanced characteristics of constituent microstructure in C-Mn-Si TRIP steels were identified.

The Thermal Diffusivity of Standard Pieces for Spark Test (불꽃試驗용 標準試片 의 熱擴散 係數)

  • The thermal diffusivity one of the series of standard pieces for spark test are determined by the flash method. The standard pieces are composed with carbon steels, structural carbon steels, alloy steels and high speed tool steels. In order to compute the thermal conductivity of the standard pieces, their specific heats are measured by a differential scanning calorimeter. The thermal conductivities are calculated from the data of specific heat, density and thermal diffusivity. To increase the accuracy of data for the thermal diffusivity by data reduction excursion method in the flash method, the governing heat diffusion equation, which is closely described experimental conditions with the finite pulse and the heat loss from the sample surfaces, is solved. In this analysis an integral transform is used.
