  • Two different methods of free span analysis of offshore pipelines by DnV codes were introduced and compared in order to calculate the allowable free span lengths of the offshore pipelines. The allowable span lengths of the offshore pipelines for installation, hydrotest and operation conditions by static and dynamic span analysis were determined. Static analysis was performed by ASME codes and dynamic span analysis was performed by both 1981 DnV code. Comparison of two codes were carried out. A new design procedure to calculate the allowable span lengths was developed with new DnV code.

  • Subsea pipelines have an important role in the overall tasks of offshore oil and gas production but arc exposed to various hazards with high potential risks of damage resulting in serious economic loss and impact on ocean environment. In this paper, the dynamic free span is analysed, which is one of main risk factors against the safety of subsea pipelines and the allowable length of dynamic free span which is important for the design of subsea pipelines is determined. The allowable free span length is examined by considering the relationship between vortex shedding frequency and natural frequency of pipeline free span, and the variation of the allowable length is analysed for different boundary conditions of pipe ends. The free span is regarded as a beam on elastic foundations and the boundary condition of the beam is generalized by modelling as restrained by linear and rotational spring at each end. A non-dimensionalized curve is obtained to facilitate the determination of exact allowable length of dynamic free span for subsea pipelines and is applied to the pipelines which is to be installed in the gas fields of the south of East Sea of Korea.

  • In this study, the optimal support span determination of pipeline system was carried out in consideration of the effects of seismic loads. The theoretical support and structural analysis were used to determine the optimal support span of piping system according to pipe diameter using theoretical and structural deflection criteria. The reliability of the analysis results was secured by comparing the structural and theoretical results. In particular, the optimum support span of piping system was obtained by considering the effects of seismic load, and the optimal support span of pipe diameter and piping system tended to be proportional to each other. When considering the effects of earthquakes on different pipe diameters(300~2,500mm), the span length is reduced by up to 48% at the allowable stress criterion, and the pipe span length is reduced by up to 5.9% at the deflection criterion. It can be seen that the effect of the seismic load on the determination of the piping span length has a greater effect on the stress than the displacement.

  • Subsets pipelines are exposed to several potential risks of damage due to corrosion, soil instability, anchor impact and other hazards. One of the main risk factors for the safety of a subsea pipeline is its free spanning. This paper examines the safety of subsea pipelines with free span under axial compressive load. The variation of allowable lengths of dynamic free span is examined for generalized boundary conditions. The free span is modelled as a beam with an elastic foundations and the boundary condition is replaced by linear and rotational springs at each end. A dynamic free span curve is obtained with a function of non-dimensional parameters and can be used usefully for the design of subsea pipelines with a free span. A case study is carried out to introduce the application method of the curve.

  • Preflex beams are prestressed by the predeflection technique, which enables the use of concrete-encased high strength steel beams where deflection or cracking of concrete, or both, would otherwise be excessive. This study presents the analysis of the two span preflex composite girder bridges with Load and Resistance Factor Design(LRFD), which is most widely used design nile in the advanced states. The results show that the comparison of LRR with Allowable Stress Design(ASD) according to span length.

  • Because the pile-bent of IPM Bridge is projected from the soil surface, excessive displacement of abutment can be induced. According to design guide of IPM Bridge, the shape of the bridges used in this study was applied to the maximum applicable 120.0m span, 30-degree for skew angle, and 10.0m for the protruded pile-bent height. The maximum displacement by the maximum span application condition of the IPM Bridge was calculated using this bridge model, and the safety of a horizontal displacement of the IPM Bridge was investigated based on the allowable displacement presented by Bozozuk. The maximum horizontal displacement of the IPM Bridge was calculated to be larger in the winter shrinkage condition than in the summer expansion condition, the horizontal displacements were more affected by the length of a bridge than by the skew angle. And the vertical displacement was not affected by the skew angle and length. As the span increases, the horizontal displacement increases significantly, the horizontal displacement at 120.0m span length was found to exceed the allowable displacement proposed by Bozozuk. However, the moment generated in the pile-bent did not exceed the plastic moment.

  • The depth of superstructure is the summation of the height of girders and the thickness of the deck floor. In this study, it is aim to determine the maximum span length of girders and minimum depth of the superstructure of prestressed concrete I-girder bridge. For this purpose the superstructure of the bridge with the width of 10m and the thickness of the deck floor of 0.175m, which the girders length was changed by two meter increments between 15m and 35m, was taken into account. Twelve different girders with heights of 60, 75, 90, 100, 110, 120, 130, 140, 150, 160, 170 and 180 cm, which are frequently used in Turkey, were chosen as girder type. The analyses of the superstructure of prestressed concrete I girder bridge was conducted with I-CAD software. In the analyses AASHTO LRFD (2012) conditions were taken into account a great extent. The dead loads of the structural and non-structural elements forming the bridge superstructure, prestressing force, standard truck load, equivalent lane load and pedestrian load were taken into consideration. HL93, design truck of AASHTO and also H30S24 design truck of Turkish Code were selected as vehicular live load. The allowable concrete stress limit, the number of prestressed strands, the number of debonded strands and the deflection parameters obtained from analyses were compared with the limit values found in AASHTO LRFD (2012) to determine the suitability of the girders. At the end of the study maximum span length of girders and equation using for calculation for minimum depth of the superstructure of prestressed concrete I-girder bridge were proposed.

  • Subsea pipelines are exposed to several potential risks of damage due to wave, soil instability and other hazards. Structural failure of the steel pipelines will result in serious consequences such as release of transported hydrocarbons, pollution to the ocean environment and heavy costs due to repair. This paper examines the safety of subsea pipelines with free span which is one of high potential damages. The variation of an allowable length of static free span is examined for different boundary conditions and is given in a curve which is useful for the dsign of the subsea pipeline with a free span.

  • Improvement was made on the free span analysis of the offshore pipelines. The effect of axial force (both tension and compressive force) can be explicitly applied to the current design code. The closed form solutions of beam-column equation were derived for the typical boundary conditions. The solutions can be used to find the natural frequencies of the span using the energy balance concept. The results can be applied to the current design code and will result more realistic calculation of free span lengths of offshore pipelines.

  • In the long span bridge construction, construction cost portion of large scale marine foundation is about 40% (KICTEP, 2007). In this study, designs for deep water depth large composite foundation of a super long span cable-stayed girder bridge of prototype were performed by three design methods (ASD, LRFD, Eurocode) and the behaviors of a large diameter drilled shaft were analyzed and the 3D numerical analysis was performed. As a result, the soft rock socket lengths in allowable stress design estimation method were the longest. The soft rock socket lengths estimated by the design approach 2 among Eurocode and the LRFD were similar. The longer the socket length socketed in the soft rock was, the smaller the axial force acting on a large-diameter drilled shaft head was and the smaller the settlement of drilled shaft was.
