Limit state design (LSD) and allowable stress design (ASD) are two main types of soil nailing design methodologies. In the LSD method, stability is determined by applying individual coefficients to ground strength, working load and etc. The ASD method calculates the safety factor and compares it with the minimum safety factor to determine the stability. The global design trend of soil nailing system is changing from the ASD method to the LSD method. The design method in Korea still adopts the ASD philosophy while others mostly do the limit state design. In this study, four soil nail design methods, 'FHWA GEC 7' in U.S. (2015), 'Clouterre' in France (1991), 'Soil nailing - best practice guidance' in U.K. (2005), 'Geoguide 7' in Hongkong (2008), and 'Design guide for slope in construction work' in Korea (2016) were applied to the evaluation of the stability and the results were analyzed comparatively in brief. It is revealed that the design method of 'the overall stability of soil nail walls' in Korea is the most conservative and next those by FHWA, Clouterre and CIRIA become more conservative in order. However, the difference of results obtained from FHWA and Clouterre is negligible. Also, this study found out that efforts to improve domestic design criterion are needed.
Probability based design(PBD) method is independent of construction materials and uses real material properties unlike allowable stress design(ASD) that depends on small clear specimen property, also give quantitative safety and endurance lifetime of a certain material. Moreover, almost advanced country accepted PBD method instead of ASD method. So it is urgent to convert the current ASD method into the PBD method. However, there are wholly lacking of domestic researches related to current issue, and to solve several points in ASD method and to take advantage of PBD method, the conversion from the ASD method into the PBD method is a worldwide trend. Other domestic construction codes, such as steel or concrete constructions, accept the PBD method as well. Accordingly, to introduce PBD method into wood structural design, general theory, and preliminary data and methods were reviewed. With keeping this in mind, some important contents were reviewed, sorted some points for wood structural design that have distinctions against the other construction materials. Furthermore, the history of PBD method, and statistical data and theories for the PBD method, and preliminary data of resistance and load that are two random variables for the PBD method, and finally the difference between limit state design(LSD) and load and resistance factor design(LRFD) that were two superpowers in the PBD method.

Now that problems with force-based seismic design have been clearly identified, design is inclined toward displacement-based methods. One such widely used method is Direct-Displacement-Based Design (DDBD). Yet, one of the shortcomings of DDBD is considering higher-mode amplification of story shear, moments, and displacements using equations obtained from limited parametric studies of regular planar frames. In this paper, a different approach to account for higher-mode effects is proposed. This approach determines the lateral secant stiffness of the building frames that fulfill the allowable inter-story drift without exceeding the desired story displacements. Using the stiffness, an elastic response spectrum analysis is carried out to determine elastic higher-mode force effects. These force effects are then combined with DDBD-obtained first-mode force effects using the appropriate modal superposition method so that design can be performed. The proposed design procedure is verified using Nonlinear Time History Analysis (NTHA) of twelve planar frames in four categories accounting for mass and stiffness irregularity along the height. In general, the NTHA response outputs compared well with the allowable limits of the performance objective. Thus, it fulfills the aim of minimizing the use of NTHA for planar frame buildings, thereby saving computational resources and effort.

In order to study the AC driving mechanism for OLED lighting, the fluorescent OLEDs were fabricated and the electroluminescent characteristics of the OLEDs by AC forward bias were analyzed. In the case of the driving method of OLED by AC forward bias under the same voltage and the same current density, degradation of luminescent characteristics for elapsed time progressed faster than in the case of the driving method by DC bias. These phenomena were caused by the peak voltage of AC forward bias which is ${\sqrt{2}}$ times higher than the DC voltage. In addition, the degradation of the OLED was accelerated because the AC forward bias had come close to the upper limit of the allowable voltage range even though the peak voltage didn't exceed the allowable range of the OLED. However, the fabricated fluorescent OLED showed little degradation of OLED characteristics due to AC forward bias from 0 V to 6.04 V. Therefore, OLED lighting by AC driving will become commercialized if sufficient luminance is realized at a voltage at which the characteristics of the OLED are not degradation by the AC driving method.
This study was undertaken to evaluate the allowable welding heat input range for high strength steels manufactured by various processes and to compare the weldability of TMCP steel for high heat input welding with that of conventional Ti-added normalized steel. The allowable welding heat input ranges for conventional 50kg/$mm^2$ steel to guarantee D or E grade of ship structural steel were below 150 and 80kJ/cm respectively. Such a limit in welding heat input was closely related with the formation of undesirable microstructures, such as grain boundary ferrite and ferrite side plate in the coarse grain HAZ. In case of 60 and 80kg/$mm^2$ quenched and tempered steels, for securing toughness in weldments over toughness requirements for base metal, each welding heat input had to be restricted below 60 and 40kJ/cm, that was mainly due to coarsened polygonal ferrite in weld metal and lower temperature transformation products in coarse grain HAZ. The TMCP steel could be appropriate as a grade E ship hull steel up to 200kJ/cm, but the Ti-added normalized steel could be applied only below 130kJ/cm under the same rule. This difference was partly owing to whether uniform and fine intragranular ferrite microstructure was well developed in HAZ or not.
Explosive blasting in tunnel excavation produces ground vibration and air blast as its side effects, which may cause complaints from nearby residents. This study was intended to investigate the propagation characteristics of ground vibration induced by tunnel blasting and to evaluate its effects on the residential structures near the site. We have conducted field measurements for 6 blasts and acquired vibration data from 70 measuring points, some of which on positioned inside the tunnel for comparative reason. Various documentation was reviewed to determine an allowable level of peak particle velocity for the residential structures in the area and the allowable limit was set to 0.5 cm/sec. Propagation equations for peak particle velocities were derived from regression analyses using the data acquired at both the surface and the underground tunnel. Finally we proposed appropriate predictive equations for the two areas and a safe blasting criterion.

Reliability between safety factor and reliability index for driven and bored pile load capacity was analyzed in this study. 0.1B, Chin, De Beer, and Davisson's methods were used for determining pile load capacity by using load-settlement curve from pile load test. Each method defines ultimate yield and allowable pile load capacities. LCPC method using CPT results was performed for comparing results of pile load test. Based on FOSM analysis using load factors, it is obtained that reliability indices for ultimate pile load capacity were higher than those of yield and allowable condition. Present safety factor 2 for yield and allowable load capacities is not enough to satisfy target reliability index $2.0{\sim}2.5$. However, it is sufficient for ultimate pile load capacity using safety factor 3.

The limit states design method is replacing the allowable stress design method worldwide, e.g. the design code of ISO and various construction codes of Korea are adopting the reliability based limit state method. This paper proposed LRFD design value which is one of limit states design method for the PHC bored pile used as building foundation. This paper analysed 81 load test results and the bearing design(Meyerhof method & SPT-CPT conversion method), and proposed LRFD value for each design reliability Index 2.33 and 3.0 for PHC bored pile. LRFD value of PHC bored pile represents 0.36~0.44 for Meyerhof method and 0.24~0.31 for SPT-CPT conversion method according to the deign reliability index.
Soil nailing method was often designed by the slope stability analysis based on limit equilibrium. However, in the case of shorten length of nails, although the calculated factor of safety is within the design factor of safety, the horizontal displacement of soil nailed walls occurred above the allowable limit. In this study, relationship between the load and factor of safety, and relationship between the load and displacement ratio based on the test results were analysed. From the analysed results, the relationship between factor of safety and displacement ratio was estimated. For the mobilized horizontal displacement of the walls within the serviceability limit corresponding to the displacement of less than 0.3% displacement ratio, the calculated factor of safety by limit equilibrium analysis had to satisfy above 1.35. Also, although the minimum factor of safety is estimated above 1.35, the maximum horizontal displacement is often mobilized above 0.3% of excavation height. Therefore, it is necessary to perform the numerical analysis of soil nailed walls in the case of low shear strength or high excavation.

This paper investigates the magneto-rheological(MR) mount for the marine diesel-generator(D/G) sets. Sometimes, significant vibrations over the allowable limit are observed on the D/G sets due to their huge excitation forces. Because the severe vibration can lead to structural damages to the D/G sets, it should be reduced below the limit. Although passive mounts with rubber isolators are usually used, the vibration reduction performance is not always sufficient. In addition, expecting that the vibration levels required by customers will get more severe, vibration reduction devices need to be developed. To the aim, the flow mode type of MR mount has been designed. Especially, the annular-radial configuration was adopted to enhance the damping force within the restricted space. The geometry of the mount has been optimized to obtain the required damping force and the magnetic field analysis has been carried out using ANSYS APDL. To verify the performance of the developed MR mount, an excitation test was conducted. In addition, they were applied to a medium-speed diesel generator and it was verified that about 40% of vibration reduction was yielded.
