  • We have demonstrated all-opticalflip-flop based on optical bistability in a SOA/DFB-SOA with broadband gain. Input signal with the wavelength of 1340.23 nm or 1680.93 nm and the current of about 98% of the lasing threshold is injected into theDFB-SOA. Current injected into SOA is 80 mA All-optical flip-flop has various applications such as all-optical memory, demultiplexing, packet-header buffering, and retiming.

  • We proposed and studied an all-optical switching device made of a bent nonlinear waveguide and an all-optical logic gate made of a bent nonlinear Y-junction. The proposed devices as switch and a logic function are based on the evolution of nonlinear guided wave along a bent nonlinear waveguide. Since the characteristics of beam propagation depens on the nonlinearity, input power and bent angle of waveguide, the characteristics of output power transmission is calculated by variation the such parameters. Furthermore, by calculating the output power through the nonlinear media with different positions of detector in nonlinear media, we could find the ideal digital switching performance at specific position of detector and implement several all-optical logic functions (AND, OR, XOR) by power contrast between waveguide end and nonlinear media.

  • An all-optical 4-bit Gray code to binary coded decimal (BCD) converter by means of commercially available numerical analysis tool (VPI) was demonstrated, for the first time to our knowledge. Circuit design approach was modified appropriately in order to fit the electrical method on an all-optical logic circuit based on a cross gain modulation (XGM) process so that signal degradation due to the non-ideal optical logic gates can be minimized. Without regenerations, Q-factor of around 4 was obtained for the most severely degraded output bit (least significant bit-LSB) with 2.5 Gbps clean input signals having 20 dB extinction ratio. While modifying the two-level simplification method and Karnaugh map method to design a Gray code to BCD converter, a general design concept was also founded (one-level simplification) in this research, not only for the Gray code to BCD converter but also for any general applications.

  • A novel all-optical NOR gate is proposed and demonstrated for the first time by use of gain saturation in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). It is operated by the nonlinearity of the SOA gain. Hence, to obtain sufficient gain saturation of the SOA, pump signals are amplified by an Er-doped fiber amplifier at the input of the SOA. The operation characteristics of the all-optical NOR gate are successfully measured at 10 Gbit/s.

Dynamics of All-Optical Switching in Bacteriorhodopsin and its Application to Optical Computing

  • All-optical switching has been demonstrated in bacteriorhodopsin (bR) based on nonlinear intensity induced excited state absorption. The transmission of a cw probe laser beam at 410 nm corresponding to the peak absorption of M state through a bR film is switched by a pulsed pump laser beam at 570 nm that corresponds to the maximum initial 8 state absorption. The switching characteristics have been analyzed using the rate equation approach considering all the six intermediate states (B, K, L, M, N and 0) in the bR photocycle. The switching characteristics are shown to be sensitive to life time of the M state, absorption cross-section of the 8 state at probe wavelength ($\sigma$ $\_$Bp/) and peak pump intensity. It has been shown that the probe laser beam can be completely switched off (100 % modulation) by the pump laser beam at relatively low pump powers, for $\sigma$$\_$Bp/ = O. The switching characteristics have been used to design all-optical NOT, OR, AND and the universal NOR and NAND logic gates for optical computing with two pulsed pump laser beams.

  • All-optical data extraction, one of the key technologies for all-optical computing and optical communication to perform add-drop, packet switching, and data reset, etc., is experimentally demonstrated by using cross-gain modulation (XGM) of semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs). Also, all-optical data extraction based on numerical simulation is performed by using the VPI simulation tool. In this paper, the suggested optical system based on SOAs shows the potential for high speed, and highly integrable and low power optical data computing.

  • All-optical NOR logic device was realized by use of two pump signals with a single wavelength and a semiconductor optical amplifier(SOA). Specially, Mach-Zehnder(MZ) modulator was used for an external modulation of the pump signals. To obtain the sufficient gain saturation of the SOA, pump signals are amplified by an Er-doped fiber amplifier(EDFA) at the input of the SOA. Pump and probe signals are obtained from a DFB laser diode(${\lambda}_p$=1554 nm) and a tunable laser diode(${\lambda}_s$=1535 nm), respectively. The operation characteristics of the NOR logic device are successfully measured and demonstrated at the modulation frequency of 4.83 MHz.
