Due to high esthetic demands from patients, we are driven to fabricate natural-looking(form and color) restorations. In the past decade, the glass-ceramic in dentistry has been used as a material with variable crystals that affects the appearance, characteristics, and mechanical properties of metal-free fixed restoration. The conventional IPS Empress glass-ceramic is a heat-pressed, leucite reinforced material using the "lost wax" principle. This glass-ceramic has been successfully used for esthetic restorations such as all-ceramic crowns, inlays/onlays, and veneers for about 15 years. This article presents that the form and surface texture of clinical crown are duplicated by IPS-Empress system using "lost-wax technique".
Water-based alumina tapes for application of all-ceramic crowns were fabricated using PVP as binder that is biocompatible, highly soluble in solvents, and no residue leftafter firing. Tensile strength of alumina tapes was governed by binder/(binder+plasticizer)ratio. On the other hand, linear shrinkage and density were determined by alumina/(alumina+organic) ratio. Composite for all-ceramic crowns, prepared by infiltration of a glass into sintered porous alumina, showed high flexural strength which increased with increasing sintered density.
Statement of problem: Recently, there have been increased esthetic needs for posterior dental restorations. The failure of posterior dental ceramic restoration are possible not only by the characters of the component materials but also by the type of food. Purpose: The research aim was to compare the in vitro fracture resistance of simulated first molar crowns fabricated using 4 dental ceramic systems, full-porcelain-occlusal-surfaced PFG, half-porcelain-occlusal-surfaced PFG, Empress 2, Ice Zirkon and selected Korean foods. Material and methods: Eighty axisymmetric crowns of each system were fabricated to fit a preparation with 1.5- to 2.0-mm occlusal reduction. The center of the occlusal surface on each of 15 specimens per ceramic system was axially loaded to fracture in a Instron 4465, and the maximum load(N) was recorded. Afterwards, selected Korean foods specimens(boiled crab, boiled chicken with bone, boiled beef rib, dried squid, dried anchovy, round candy, walnut shell) were prepared. 15 specimens per each food were placed under the Instron and the maximum fracture loads for them were recorded. The 95% confidence intervals of the characteristic failure load were compared between dental ceramic systems and Korean foods. Afterwards, on the basis of previous results, 14Hz cyclic load was applied on the 4 systems of dental ceramic restorations in MTS. The reults were analyzed by analysis of variance and Post Hoc tests. Results: 95% confidence intervals for mean of fracture load 1. full porcelain occlusal surfaced PFG Crown: 2599.3 to 2809.1 N 2. half porcelain occlusal surfaced PFG Crown: 3689.4 to 3819.8 N 3. Ice Zirkon Crown: 1501.2 to 1867.9 N 4. Empress 2 Crown: 803.2 to 1188.5 N 5. boiled crab: 294.1 to 367.9 N 6. boiled chicken with bone: 357.1 to 408.6 N 7. boiled beef rib: 4077.7 to 4356.0 N 8. dried squid: 147.5 to 190.5 N 9. dried anchovy: 35.6 to 46.5 N 10. round candy: 1900.5 to 2615.8 N 11. walnut shell: 85.7 to 373.1 N under cyclic load(14Hz) in MTS, fracture load and masticatory cycles are: 1. full porcelain occlusal surfaced PFG Crown fractured at 95% confidence intervals of 4796.8-9321.2 cycles under 2224.8 N(round candy)load, no fracture under smaller loads. 2. half porcelain occlusal surfaced PFG Crown fractured at 95% confidence intervals of 881705.1-1143565.7 cycles under 2224.8 N(round candy). no fracture under smaller loads. 3. Ice Zirkon Crown fractured at 95% confidence intervlas of 979993.0-1145773.4 cycles under 382.9 N(boiled chicken with bone). no fracture under smaller loads. 4. Empress 2 Crown fractured at 95% confidence intervals of 564.1-954.7 cycles under 382.9 N(boiled chicken with bone). no fracture under smaller loads. Conclusion: There was a significant difference in fracture resistance between experimental groups. Under single load, Korean foods than can cause fracture to the dental ceramic restorations are boiled beef rib and round candy. Even if there is no fracture under single load, cyclic dynamic load can fracture dental posterior ceramic crowns. Experimental data with 14 Hz dynamic cyclic load are obtained as follows. 1. PFG crown(full porcelain occlusion) was failed after mean 0.03 years under fracture load for round candy(2224.8 N). 2. PFG crown(half porcelain occlusion) was failed after mean 4.1 years under fracture load for round candy(2224.8 N). 3. Ice Zirkon crown was failed after mean 4.3 years under fracture load for boiled chicken with bone(382.9 N). 4. Empress 2 crown was failed after mean 0.003 years under fracture load for boiled chicken with bone(382.9 N).

The purpose of this study was to compare the fracture strength of the IPS-Empress ceramic crown according to margin types such as bevel, shoulder, rounded shoulder, shoulder with bevel, rounded shoulder with bevel and bevel with groove. After 10 metal dies were constructed for each group, the IPS-Empress ceramic crown were fabricated and each crown was cemented on each metal die with Bistite resin cement. The cemented crowns mounted in the testing jig were inclined 30 degree and universal testing machine (Zwick 1456 41, Zwick Co., Germany) was used to measure the fracture strength. The obtained results were as follows : 1. The fracture strength of the crown with rounded shoulder was the highest of all. The mean fracture strength was 484N in rounded shoulder, 357N in bevel, 341N in rounded shoulder with bevl, 300N in shoulder with bevel, 280N in shoulder and 275N in bevel with groove. 2. The fracture strength of rounded shoulder was statistically different from those of shoulder with bevel, shoulder and beve41 with groove. 3. In the strain at fracture, there was no significant difference among each group. 4. The fracture mode of the crown was similar and most of fracture line began at the loading area and extended through proximal surface perpendicularly to the margin, irrespective of margin type.
PURPOSE. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of the color of a background substructure on the overall color of a zirconia-based all-ceramic crown. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Twenty one posterior zirconia crowns were made for twenty subjects. Seven premolar crowns and six molar crowns were cemented onto abutments with metal post and core in the first and second group. In the third group, eight molar crowns were cemented onto abutments with a prefabricated post and composite core build-up. The color measurements of all-ceramic crowns were made before try-in, before and after cementation. A repeated measure ANOVA was used for a statistical analysis of a color change of all-ceramic crowns at ${\alpha}$=.05. Twenty four zirconia specimens, with different core thicknesses (0.4-1 mm) were also prepared to obtain the contrast ratio of zirconia materials after veneering. RESULTS. $L^*$, $a^*$, and $b^*$ values of all-ceramic crowns cemented either on a metal cast post and core or on a prefabricated post did not show significant changes (P>.05). However, the slight color changes of zirconia crowns were detected and represented by ${\Delta}E{^*}_{ab}$ values, ranging from 1.2 to 3.1. The contrast ratios of zirconia specimens were 0.92-0.95 after veneering. CONCLUSION. No significant differences were observed between the $L^*$, $a^*$, and $b^*$ values of zirconia crowns cemented either on a metal cast post and core or a prefabricated post and composite core. However, the color of a background substructure could affect the overall color of posterior zirconia restorations with clinically recommended core thickness according to ${\Delta}E{^*}_{ab}$ values.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to perform a clinical and radiographic analysis of endodontically treated teeth (ETT) restored with cast metal posts (CMPs) or prefabricated glass fiber posts (GFPs) and crowns. Materials and Methods: Fifty ETT were restored with 25 CMPs and 25 GFPs at a private dental clinic between 2001 and 2016. The restorations consisted of 12 all-ceramic crowns, 31 metal-ceramic crowns, and 7 composite resin crowns. Demographic data, type of teeth, type of post-and-core system, time of placement, crown restorations, the number of proximal contacts, the type of antagonist, and reports of any complications after post-and-core placement were recorded for each patient. Assessments were performed at baseline (radiographic) and follow-up (radiographic and clinical). Data were analyzed by the McNemar test, the Pearson χ2 test, and Kaplan-Meier survival curves (α = 0.05). The mean follow-up was 67.6 months. Results: No significant difference was observed for any of the radiographic parameters when the baseline and final radiographs were compared. In the clinical evaluation, anatomical form (p = 0.009) and occlusion (p = 0.001) showed significant differences according to the type of crown restoration; specifically, metal-ceramic and all-ceramic crowns outperformed composite resin crowns. Conclusions: CMPs and GFPs showed favorable results for restoring ETT after 6 years of follow-up. All-ceramic and metal-ceramic crowns showed higher survival rates and better clinical outcomes.
Purpose: The present study was performed to investigate the effect of abutment inclined angle on the marginal fit of zirconia all-ceramic crown. Methods: The Ti abutments with 3 different inclined angle($2^{\circ}$, $4^{\circ}$ and $6^{\circ}$) were fabricated. The zirconia copings were fabricated for each abutment by using dental CAD/CAM system. The manufactured zirconia copings were duplicated through silicone replica technique, and a replicated specimen was sectioned in the center of bucco-lingual and mesio-distal axial to measure the marginal fit by using a stereo microscope. The results were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA with SPSS 22.0 for Windows(${\alpha}=0.05$). Results: On the bucco-lingual axial, marginal fit was the RL3($41.5{\pm}3.4{\mu}m$), RL2($44.3{\pm}4.3{\mu}m$) and RL1($47.5{\pm}5.7{\mu}m$), respectively. On the mesio-distal axial, marginal fit was the RL3($41.1{\pm}3.7{\mu}m$), RL2($45.7{\pm}5.3{\mu}m$) and RL1($46.2{\pm}4.5{\mu}m$), respectively. One-way ANOVA showed statistically significant difference between groups for marginal fit(p<0.05). Conclusion: For marginal fit of the abutments inclined angle, RL3 specimen was superior. The abutment inclined angle had influence on marginal fit of the zirconia copings. The marginal fit of each group were within clinically acceptable range.

By the concerns of esthetic restoration were increased recently. many all ceramic crowns were developed. But they except In-Ceram Alumina were used only single crown. In-Ceram Alumina, developed by Dr. Sadon, was revealed to have high flexural Strength(450MPa). So it could be used not only anterior bridges but also posterior bridges. But In-Ceram Alumina was seen to be opaque, a little green color in transillumination light by high content of alumina oxide(85%). So new all ceramics with high strength and high translucence were needed. Spinell($MgAl_2O_3$) have a high melting point, high flexural strength, low heat conductivity, high light conductivity. In-Ceram Spinell offers glasslike light transmission by using the spinell cores instead of the alumina cores. And they have a high translucency like to natural tooth, an excellent margin integrity and a high strength(350MPa). The purposes of this study are 1) to know about the construction method of In-Ceram Spinell System, 2) to investigate the its clinical possibiliy through patients and literature reviews.
