Intrinsic Viscosity and Unperturbed Dimension of Poly(DL-lactic acid) Solution

  • The intrinsic viscosities were determined for poly(DL-lactic acid) (PDLLA) solutions in 1,2-dialkyl phthalate at temperatures ranging from 30 to $60^{\circ}C$. A series of dialkyl phthalate, in which the alkyl group was changed from methyl to propyl, was used as the solvent to control the solvent quality systematically. The intrinsic viscosity of the PDLLA solution was higher in the better quality solvent, with a higher molecular weight of PDLLA, and at lower temperatures. The unperturbed dimensions of the PDLLA molecule and polymer-solvent interaction parameter of PDLLA in dialkyl phthalate were deduced using extrapolation methods based on the temperature-dependent intrinsic viscosities. Slight shrinkage in the unperturbed chain dimension was observed, which resulted from a change in polymer conformation with temperature. It was also observed that the polymer-solvent interaction became more favorable with the dialkyl phthalate containing a shorter alkyl chain.

Applicability of Fibrous Solid Phase Extraction to Alkyl Phthalates Analysis (알킬프탈레이트 분석을 위한 섬유상 고상 추출법의 적용 가능성)

  • A fibrous material (p-phenylene-2,5-benzobisoxazole, PBO) was used as an adsorbent for solid phase extraction in order to simplify the extraction procedure. The extraction performance for di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) was examined with two types of PBO fibers (HM (High modulus) and AS (Regular type) types) by batch type sorption/desorption experiments. When 100 mg of the HM fibers were applied to 20 mL of the aqueous DEHP solution (less than $50{\mu}g/L$), more than 95% of DEHP was adsorbed on the fibers, however, the AS type fibers adsorbed alkyl phthalate up to 80%. In the case of $50{\mu}g/L$ of the initial concentration of DEHP, the adsorbed DEHP was extracted effectively with methanol and the maximum overall recovery ratio was 92.3%. The results indicated that the PBO fibers could be used as an adsorbent for alkyl phthalate analysis, and that the extraction procedure was not affected by suspended solids in a water sample.

Synthesis and Characterization of Bifunctional Organic-Glasses Based on Diphenylhydrazone and Barbituric Acid Derivative for Photorefractive Application

  • A series of amorphous molecules that possess both photoconductive and electro-optic properties was synthesized in order to investigate photorefractive properties of bifunctional organic-glasses. Diethylaminobenzaldehyde-diphenylhydrazone was covalently attached to 5-(4-diethylamino-benzylidene)-1,3-dimethylpyrimidine-2,4,6-trione through a flexible alkyl chain (3, 4, 5, 6 and 10 carbons) containing two ether linkages. The longer linkage not only lowered the glass transition temperature ($T_g$) of the molecules, but also allowed faster orientation of the chromophore. To examine the photorefractive properties, a 50 ${\mu}$m-thick film was prepared from the mixture of a bifunctional molecule, butyl benzyl phthalate, and $C_{60}$. The photoconductivity of this composite was as high as $8.01\;{\times}\;10^{-12}$ S/cm at 60 V/ ${\mu}$m, and the maximum diffraction efficiency ( ${\eta}_{max}$) of 50 ${\mu}$m-thick film was about 5% at 80 V/ ${\mu}$m.
