  • With the emerging importance of catalysts for water electrolysis, developing efficient and inexpensive electrocatalysts for water electrolysis plays a vital role in renewable hydrogen energy technology. In this study, a 1nm thickness of TiC-supported Ru catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has been successfully fabricated using an electron (E)-beam evaporator and thermal decomposition of gaseous CH4 in a furnace. The prepared Ru/TiC catalyst exhibited an outstanding performance for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction with an overpotential of 55 mV at 10 mA cm-2. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the outstanding HER performance of Ru/TiC was attributed to the high surface area of the support and the metal-support interaction.

  • Medicated water electrolysis apparatus, which electrolyzes water into acidic water and alkaline water, was in the spotlight as becoming known the effect of alkaline water. It is known as good for health as removing active oxygen in the human's body and promoting digestion. But, the customers could not get that desired water temperature because these apparatuses are directly connected with a water pipe. So, the cooling system was developed for controlling the temperature of the alkaline water. One of the typical way is to store water in water tank and control the temperature. But, in this way, storing water can be polluted impurities coming from outside. For protecting this pollution, the cooling system based on indirect heat exchange method through phase change between water and ice was developed. In this study, we have calculated efficiency of the cooling system with phase change by experiment and commercial CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) code, ANSYS CFX. To consider the effect of latent heat that is generated by melting ice, we have simulated two phase numerical analyses used enthalpy method and found the temperature, velocity, and ice mass distribution for calculating the efficiency of cooling. From the results of numerical analysis, we have obtained the relationship between the cooling efficiency and each design factor.

  • An anion exchange membrane was prepared for a separator in the alkaline water electrolysis. An anion exchange membrane was prepared by the chloromethylation and amination of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) used as a base polymer. The membrane properties of the prepared anion exchange membrane such as the membrane resistance and ion exchange capacity were measured. The minimum membrane resistance of the prepared anion exchange membrane was $2.9{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ in 1M NaOH aq. solution. This membrane had 2.17 meq./g-dry-membrane and 43.4% for the ion exchange capacity and water content, respectively. The membrane properties of the prepared anion exchange membrane was compared with that of the commercial anion exchange membrane. The membrane resistance decreased in the order; AHT>IOMAC> Homemade membrane> AHA>APS=AFN. The ion exchange capacity decreased in the order; Homemade membrane>AFN>APS>AHT>AHA>IOMAC.

  • In this study, we sought to verify the applicability of anion exchange membrane water electrolysis system using FAA-3-50, Neosepta-ASE, Sustainion grade T, and Fujifilm type 10, which are commercial anion exchange membranes. The morphology of the commercial membranes and the elements on the surface were analyzed using SEM/EDX to confirm the distribution of functional groups included in the commercial membranes. In addition, mechanical strength and decomposition temperature were measured using UTM and TGA to check whether the driving conditions of the water electrolyte were satisfied. The ion exchange capacity and ion conductivity were measured to understand the performance of anion exchange membranes, and the alkaline resistance of each commercial membrane was checked and durability test was performed because they were driven in an alkaline environment. Finally, a membrane-electrode assembly was manufactured and a water electrolysis single cell test was performed to confirm cell performance at 60℃, 70℃, and 80℃. The long-term cell test was measured 20 cycles at other temperatures to compare water electrolysis performance.

  • In this study, rotary magnet holder (RMH) was manufactured to analyze the ion transport effect according to the rotating magnetic field for the hydrogen production efficiency by alkaline water electrolyte. In the experiment, the voltage signal according to the magnet arrangement inside the RMH, the rotation speed, and the rotation time was measured using the voltage measurement module. As a result of the voltage signal measurement experiment, the average potential difference increased as the rotation speed of the RMH increased. Through the results of the voltage signal measurement experiment, the most efficient magnet arrangement (case 2) was applied to the RMH to conduct a water electrolysis experiment. A 20% NaOH aqueous solution was filled in the electrolytic cell, and a direct current 2 V constant voltage was applied to measure the current value according to the RMH rotation to compare the hydrogen generation amount. When rotating at 100 RPM, the hydrogen production efficiency increased by 8.06% compared to when not rotating. Considering the area exceeding +25 mA, which was not measured at the beginning of the experiment, an increase in hydrogen production of about 10% or more can be expected.
