  • The applicability of arrowroots as materials for paper manufacture was investigated by evaluating the characteristics of arrowroots pulping and pulps, and the surface characteristics of paper made of arrowroots. The results is as follows. The yield of grounded pulp, alkaline pulp, grounded bleach pulp, and alkaline bleach pulp are 98.0%, 37.7%, 84.8%, and 32.5%, respectively. The extraction components in arrowroot's fibers was shown high in 1%-NaOH extraction. The amount of holocellulose and lignin were largely decreased, but a slight decrease was shown in the bleaching processes. Many shivers were shown in the grounded fibers. The amount of shivers was decreased and the single fibers were increased during the process of bleaching. The alkaline pulp and the alkaline bleach pulp showed high in the beating time and freeness than the grounded pulp and grounded bleach pulp. The conditions of sheet surface according to beating time is effected largely by the conditions of original pulp.

  • This paper presents an overview of ONP deinking efficiency with cellulolytic enzymes and synthetic collector in alkaline pH. Deinking is a series of unit operations designed to detach ink from cellulose fibers and separate the dispersed ink from the pulp slurry. Deinking chemicals are process aids that enable expensive mill equipment used in these unit operations to operate more efficiently - often much more efficiently. We propose the blended deinking agent with cellulolutic enzymes and synthetic collector in deinking pulp of conventional alkaline method. The deinking efficiency of old news print in alkaline pH was enhanced with enzyme treatments. The brightness of deinked pulp was increased with less residual ink particles and yield of enzymatic deinked pulp was improved compared to the deinked pulp of conventional alkaline method.

  • The effects of alkaline treatment on the WRV, crystalline structure and sheet structure of softwood and hardwood bleached kraft pulp were investigated. Sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate were used as chemicals for alkaline treatment and two levels of alkali dosage (5%, 10%) were applied respectively. Alkali treated and untreated pulp were refined to three levels (550, 450 and 350 mL CSF). WRV of the alkali treated pulps depended on the alkaline type and concentration. It was found that the crystalline structures of softwood and hardwood pulp were not changed by refining. Sodium carbonate and lower concentration of sodium hydroxide treatment did not caused any modification of cellulose crystalline structure, while higher concentration of sodium hydroxide treatment caused the partial modification of cellulose crystalline structure. Alkaline treatment of hardwood bleached kraft pulp led to the shrinkage of fiber diameter and bulky structure of sheet. Alkaline treatment of softwood bleached kraft pulp did not cause the significant change in fiber shrinkage and bulk of sheet.

  • Alkaline cellulolytic enzymes from cultured medium of Coprinus cinereus 2249 were purified with gel and ion-exchange chromatography and characteristics of those enzyme proteins were investigated. A fiber length distribution and a crystallinity of cellulose and sugar composition of enzyme treated Mixed Office Wastepaper(MOW) and Unbleached Kraft Pulp(UKP) were analysed. The conclusion could summarized as follows; \circled1 Alkaline and acidic, endo- and exo-glucanases were purified from cultured medium of Coprinus cinereus 2249. \circled2 The approximate molecular weight of alkaline endo-glucanase was 42 kDa, and also that of alkaline exo-glucanase was 50 kDa. A fiber length distribution and a crystallization of cellulose and sugar composition of enzyme treated MOW and UKP were not so much changed with original paper and pulp.

  • Xylanase (X) derived from Aurreobasidium pullulans and laccase-mediator system (LM) using Trichophyton sp. LKY-7 laccase (TrL) and N-hydroxy-2-pyridone analogue (NHP) as a mediator were applied in hardwood kraft pulp (HwKP) bleaching. The individual and the synergistic effects of X and LM stage were investigated in the enzymatic bleaching of HwKP. Also, the effects of subsequent alkaline extraction (E) and alkaline/hydrogen peroxide treatment (P) were examined. In X or LM treatment alone, an appreciable bleaching effect of HwKP was not observed, whereas subsequent E or P stage enhanced the increase of brightness and the decrease of kappa number. Especially, P stage significantly enhanced the bleaching effect of pulp. Bleaching of HwKP with XLM sequentially gave significantly higher pulp brightness and lower kappa number than that obtained after the treatment of HwKP with X+LM simultaneously. When HwKP was sequentially treated with XLM followed by P stage, the brightness increased by about 11% ISO and the kappa number decreased by about 3.6 in comparison with the initial pulp. Xylanase and laccase were strongly inactivated by NHP both in the absence and the presence of pulp.

  • Waste papers(MOW and ONP) were deinked with alkaline cellulolytic enzyme from Coprinus cinereus 2249. The effectiveness of alkaline enzyme on sticky contaminant removal and bleaching of recycling pulp was investigated. The conclusions obtained from the results are as follows. The brightness of deinked pulps MOW and ONP was most high in 0.4IU enzyme treatment. \circled2 The removal effect of sticky contaminant was enhanced with alkaline cellulolytic enzyme treatment. Bleaching with sodium hydrosulfite was most effective in one and two stage bleaching after enzyme treatment of mixed wastepaper of MOW and colored paper. \circled4 The brightness of alkaline enzyme deinked ONP was increased 20% with $H_2O$$_2$ bleaching.

  • This study was carried out to compare a conventional alkaline flotation deinking conditions with neutral deinking conditions with and without enzyme addition with respect to the ink removal efficiency and theflotation deinking filtrate quality such as chemical oxygen demand, cationic demand, suspended solids. Based on ink removal rate the neutral deinking condition without enzyme was better than the alkaline deinking condition, and the neutral deinking with enzyme addition turned out to be the best. The brightness of the deinked pulp was found to be the same trend as the ink removal rate. Flotation reject rate for the neutral deinking condition without enzyme was higher than that of the alkaline deinking condition, but that of the neutral deinking condition with enzyme was lower than that of the alkaline and the neutral deinking condition without enzyme. On the freeness of the deinked pulp, the neutral deinking condition with enzyme had the highest value and the alkaline deinking condition had the lowest value among the conditions tested. On the filtrate of the flotation stage, the cationic polymer demand of the neutral deinking condition with enzyme was much lower than the other conditions. Suspended solids and chemical exygen demand for the neutral flotation deinking filtrate was lower than those of the alkaline flotation deinking filtrate.

  • Alkaline sizing characteristics of TMP (thermomechanical pulp) handsheets with AKD (alkylketene dimer) were studied under various conditions. The sizing degree of TMP handsheet was much lower than that of chemical pulp. Especially, the sized TMP handsheet dried at $20^{\circ}C$ showed no sizing features, but sizing degree of TMP handsheet was clearly Increased by heat treatment at $105^{\circ}C$. The sizing effect of TMP was also improved by addition of $CaCO_3$, but it was not affected by pH. Therefore, sizing effect of TMP with AKD can be improved to some extent by controlling stock condition and heat treatment of handsheet.

  • The spent liquor (BSL) obtained from alkaline sulfite-anthraquinone (AS-AQ) cooking of pine bark was applied as a deinking agent. In the ONP deinking system, although BSL removed the small size of ink particles (${\geq}$$12.5{\mu}m$), it did not improve the brightness of pulp. The brightness of pulp slightly improved when treated with BSL at 150~$180^{\circ}C$. However, the brightness of the pulp was lower than that of a commercial deinking agent (oleic acid). It seems that BSL treated with a high temperature still had a high dispersing ability on the ink particles. Intensive oxidations were introduced, and remarkable deinking effects were observed at 13kgf/$cm^2$ oxygen pressure, $160^{\circ}C$ and 2h. When BSL treated at 13kgf/$cm^2$ oxygen pressure, $170^{\circ}C$ and a time period of 30~90 min is added to the pulp, at 0.1% or lower, the deinking effect became higher than that of oleic acid. On the other hand, additional alkali treatments during the oxidation possibility as a deinking agent when oxidized. However, since the oxidized BSL still has a high dispersing ability and lower molecular weight, several modifications need to be done in the near future in order to be applied as a high quality deinking agent.
