  • In this research influences of type and concentration of alkali activator and curing condition on the hydration, and properties of alkali activated blast furnace slag(AAS) concrete were investigated. Sodium carbonate and sulfate were used as alkali activators and their concentration were 4~10 weight percent with Na$_2$O equivalent to binder. The curing conditions were standard curing using 23$^{\circ}C$ water and activated curing chamber at $65^{\circ}C$. Results show that in case of sodium carbonate addition high early strengths were gained by activation of early hydration, but later strength gained was slight. On the other side sodium sulfate strengths were continuously increased with adding amount and ages. Steam curing activated early hydration so that early strengths were improved but later strengths were similar to standard curing. The strength reduction of AAS mortar with sodium sulfate was less than OPC mortar in 5% sulfuric acid solution so that AAS concrete can be useful for acid-resistance concrete.

  • In this investigation, reservoir sediment and municipal sewage sludge were sintered to form the artificial lightweight aggregates. The sintered aggregates were compared with the commercialized lightweight aggregates to in terms of potential alkali-silica reactivity and chemical stability based on analyses of their physical and chemical properties, leaching of heavy metal, alkali-silica reactivity, crystal phase species and microstructure. Experimental results demonstrated that the degree of sintering of an aggregate affected the chemical resistance more strongly than did its chemical composition. According to ASTM C289-94, all potential alkali-silica reactivity of artificial lightweight aggregates were in the harmless zone, while the potential reactivity of artificial lightweight aggregates made from reservoir sediment and municipal sewage sludge were much lower than those of traditional lightweight aggregates.

  • This paper presents the findings on the sulfate resistance of mortar specimens with or without alkali-free accelerator exposed to sodium sulfate solution for 270 days. Test results confirms a negative effect of alkali-free accelerator on the sulfate deterioration. Additionally, the influences of exposure concentration and temperature of sulfate solution on expansion were investigated. Especially, at a high concentration of solution a significant expansion of mortar specimens with alkali-free accelerator was observed. Further, low temperature also promoted the deterioration of the cement system due to sulfate attack.

  • Sulfate resistance of mortar specimens with or without alkali-free accelerator exposed to sulfate solutions for 360 days was investigated. Test results confirms a negative effect of alkali-free accelerator on the sulfate deterioration, irrespective of attacking sources. Based on the ASTM C1012 expansion test, the experimental findings demonstrated that higher $C_3A$ content in cement led to the higher expansion, especially in the mortar specimens with alkali-free accelerator.

  • Cemented uranium tailings backfill created from alkali-activated slag (CUTB) is an effective method of disposing of uranium tailings. Using some environmental functional minerals with ion exchange, adsorption, and solidification abilities as backfill modified materials may improve the leaching resistance of the CUTB. Natural zeolite, which has good ion exchange and adsorption characteristics, is selected as the backfill modified material, and it is added to the backfill materials with cementitious material proportions of 4%, 8%, 12%, and 16% to prepare CUTB mixtures with environmental functional minerals. After the addition of natural zeolite, the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of the CUTB decreases, but the leaching resistance of the CUTB increases. When the natural zeolite content is 12%, the UCS reaches the minimum value of 8.95 MPa, and the concentration of uranium in the leaching solution is 0.28-8.07 mg/L, the leaching rate R42 is 9.61×10-7 cm/d, and cumulative leaching fraction P42 is 8.53×10-4 cm, which shows that the alkali-activated slag cementitious material has a good curing effect on the CUTB, and the addition of environmental functional minerals helps to further improve the leaching resistance of the CUTB, but it reduces the UCS to an extent.

  • The aim of the present study is to investigate some characteristics of concrete according to addition of blast furnace slag and alkali-activator dosages. Blast furnace slag was used at 30%, 50% replacement by weight of cement, and liquid sulfur having NaOH additives was chosen as the alkaline activator. In order to evaluate characteristics of blast furnace slag concrete with sulfur alkali activators, compressive strength test, total porosity, chloride ions diffusion coefficient test were performed. The early-compressive strength characteristics of blast furnace slag concrete using a sulufr-alkali activators was compared with those of reference concrete and added 30, 50% blast furnace slag concrete. Also, Blast furnace slag concrete using sulfur-alkali activators enhanced the total porosity, chloride ions diffusion coefficient than two standard concrete. Alkali-activated blast furnace slag concrete was related to total porosity, compressive strength and chloride ions diffusion coefficient each others. As a result, it should be noted that the sulfur-alkali activators can not only solve the demerit of blast furnace slag concrete but also offer the chloride resistance of blast furnace slag concrete using sulfur alkali activators to normal concrete.

  • Furnace slag powder used currently in Korea needs to add special functions in response to the increase of large-scale projects. In addition, it is advantageous in that it has a lower hydration heat emission rate than ordinary Portland cement and improves properties such as the inhibition of alkali aggregate reaction, watertightness, salt proofness, seawater resistance and chemical resistance. However, furnace slag powder is not self -hardening, and requires activators such as alkali for hydration. Accordingly, if recycled fine aggregate, from which calcium hydroxide is generated, and furnace slag, which requires alkali stimulation, are used together they play mutually complementary roles, so we expect to use the mixture as a resource-recycling construction material. Thus the present study purposed to examine the properties and characteristics of furnace slag powder and recycled aggregate, to manufacture recycled fine aggregate concrete using furnace slag and analyze its performance based on the results of an experiment, to provide materials on concrete using furnace slag as a cement additive and recycled fine aggregate as a substitute of aggregate, and ultimately to provide basic materials on the manufacturing of resource-recycled construction materials using binder and fine aggregate as recycled resources.

  • The present study fabricated polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber-reinforced alkali-activated slag/fly ash (AASF) composites with varying mixture ratios of slag and fly ash. The thermomechanical behaviors of the AASF composites exposed to 200, 400, 600, or 800℃ were evaluated by means of compressive strength test, visual observation, and fire resistance tests. X-ray diffractometry, mercury intrusion porosimetry, and thermogravimetry tests were performed to analyze the microstructure change of the AASF composites upon exposure to high temperatures. Specimens exhibited a gradual strength loss up to 600℃, while also showing a significant decrease in the strength above 600℃. The fire resistance test revealed the occurrence of an inflection point as indicated by an increase in the internal temperature at around 200℃. In addition, specimens showed the dehydration of C-S-H gel, the presence of åkermanite, gehlenite, and anorthite upon exposure to 800℃, which is associated with the formation of macropore population with pores having diameters of 1-3 ㎛ and 20-40 ㎛. Visual observation indicated that the PVA fibers mitigated the cracking and/or spalling of the specimens upon exposure to 800℃.

  • This study incorporates fine waste glass (GS) as a replacement for natural sand (NS) in ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) based alkali activated mortar (AAm). Tests were conducted on the AAm to determine the mechanical properties, apparent porosity and the durability based on its resistance to Na2SO4 5% and H2SO4 2% concentrated solutions. The study revealed that increasing GS up to 100 wt%, increased strength and decreased porosity. The lower porosity attained with the incorporation of GS, improved the resistance of mortar to Na2SO4 and thus increasing durability. However, the durability of mortar to H2SO4 solution was negatively impacted with the further reduction of porosity observed with increasing GS above 50 wt.% believed to be caused by the stress induced as a result of expansive reaction products created when the mortar reacted with acid.
