  • Reactive oxygen species(ROS) or free radicals are produced in the pathogenesis of human diseases including atherosclerosis, diabetes, cancer, and aging. Antioxidants are associated with the prevention of ROS-induced tissue and cellular damage in the various diseases. This study investigated the antioxidative activities of the methanol extract of Alisma plantagoaquatica var. orientale and its main component under conditions of radical generation using allophycocyanin and ferric-thiocyanate assay. Alisol B 23-acetate as a main component was isolated from the methanol extract of Alisma plantago-aquatica var. orientale. In results, the extract of Alisma plantago-aquatica var. orientale showed inhibitory activity on AAPH [2,2'-azobis(2-amidinopropane)dihydrochloride]-induced protein oxidation. Also, the extract of Alisma plantago-aquatica var. orientale and alisol B 23-acetate inhibited lipid peroxidation. These results indicate that Alisma plantago-aquatica var. orientale and alisol B 23-acetate show promise as therapeutic agents for various damages involving free radical reactions.

  • This experiment was conducted for the production of alismatis rhizoma (Alisma plantago-aquatica var. orientale Samuelsson) with high root tuber yield and alisol-B monoacetate content by treatment of different fertilizers levels. The results obtained were as follows: Shoot growth tended to increase as the fertilizers levels increased. Root tuber yield increased by 25% and 20% with 20-10-20 and 30-15-30 treatment, respectively. Alisol-B monoacetate contents increased as fertilizers levels increased, being the highest in 30-15-30 treatment.

  • Alismatis Rhizoma is originated from the rhizome of Alisma plantago-aquatica L. var. orientale Samuelson or A. canaliculatum A. Br. et Bouche (Alismataceae). Prostane-type triterpenes, guaiane-type sesquiterpenes, and kaurane-type diterpenes have been reported as the main canstituents from these plants. Four prostane-type triterpenes. alisol B 23-acetate (1). alisol C 23-acetate (2), alisol B (3). and alisol A 24-actate (4). were isolated from the EtOAc-soluble fraction of this dried rhizome. • The purpose of this study was to find the effect of 36 traditional medicinal plant species on hepatoprotective activity screening. For this study, carbon tetrachloride $(CCl_{4})$ intoxificated rats were used. Test extracts were made with the traditional medicinal plants refluxed in 95% MeOH and orally administered to the rats. Sixteen species, such as Mentha arvensis, Sophora japonica, Benincasa hispida, Lonicera japonica (Lonicerae Flos), Agaricus blazei, Epimedium koreanum, Aralia continentalis, Lithospermum erythrorhizon, Cimicifuga foetida, Gastrodia elata, Sanguisorba officinalis, Cephalonoplos segetum, Bupleurum falcatum, Alisma plantago-aquatica var. orientale, Lonicera japonica (Lonicerae Folium) and Sinomenium acutum showed protective effect against increased serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and/or serum asparteate aminotransferase (AST) activities.

  • Objectives : This study was aimed to analyze the correlation between the Herbology and contemporary research results, KCD and terms of Alismatis Rhizoma. The study will present information that can be used to find the direction of further researches and be applied to the education of Herbology. Methods : Papers were searched in Riss4U and PubMed, and categorized. Medicine or pharmacy articles about Alismatis Rhizoma were matched with the Herbology treatment and KCD. KCD-codes and terms were arranged by the Herbology treatment. The Degree of Herbology research (HDR) was calculated by numbers of papers, study method, citation rates. Results : There were 392 articles about Alismatis Rhizoma. Among these there were 141 medicine and pharmacy articles about Alismatis Rhizoma, and 51 articles were matched to the Herbology treatment. Studies about Phlegm-Fluid Retention and Dizziness, Edema and Distention and Fullness was more active than others. Analysis of other articles showed that studies about anti-cancer, anti-biotic effect, anti-diabetes mellitus, anti-oxidant effect, anti-inflammation, hepatoprotective effect were active, too. In HDR, Phlegm-Fluid Retention and Dizziness was scored by 181, Edema- Distention and Fullness by 173, Hyperlipidemia by 83, Dysuria 64, Heat strangury pain by 18, Diarrhea and decreased urine volum by 0.Conclusions : 141 articles about Alismatis Rhizoma were analyzed and 51 articles were matched to the Herbology treatment. Studies about Phlegm-Fluid Retention and Dizziness, Edema and Distention and Fullness were more active than others. And studies about anti-cancer, anti-biotic effect, anti-oxidant effect, anti-inflammation, Osteoporosis should be more studied and be more discussed among Herbology researchers.
