  • We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) aligning capabilities using the new alignment material of a diamond like carbon (DLC) thin film. A high pretilt angle of about $3.5^{\circ}$ by ion beam(IB) exposure on the DLC thin film surface was measured. A good LC alignment by the IB alignment method on the DLC thin film surface was observed at annealing temperature of $200^{\circ}C$, and the alignment defect of the NLC was observed above annealing temperature of $220^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the high NLC pretilt angle and the good thermal stability of LC alignment by the IB alignment method on the DLC thin film surface can be achieved.

  • RLG(Ring Laser Gyroscope) is a main device of LINS(Laser Inertial Navigation System). RLG has the lock-in region in which there is no output signal. To alleviate the lock-in problem, a mechanical oscillation, the dither motion, is applied on RLG. A LPF(Low Pass Filter) is usually used on the output of RLG and accelerometer to remove the noise that is made by the dither motion. When the LINS is induced the disturbance during the initial alignment, it takes more time on alignment due to the use of the LPF and a fixed gain controller. In this paper, an initial alignment using UKF(Unscented Kalman Filter) is designed and analysed. Analysis include comparison between conventional initial alignment loop using fixed gain type controller and proposed initial alignment using UKF. Moreover, Disturbance inducing test results are demonstrated.

  • Alignment characteristic of liquid crystal (LC) on in-cell retarder which is composed of reactive mesogens has been tested. The in-cell retarder which is polymerized on top of the homogeneous alignment layer (AL) has an optic axis along the rubbing direction of the homeogenous AL and does show good alignment effect of the LC without showing any defects, which possibly allows a skip of another AL on the in-cell retarder that was required conventionally to control alignment of the LC. However, the measured pretilt angle is only 0.04 degree so that disclination lines are generated for a cell that uses the in-cell retarder as an AL when the LC is tilted upward by a vertical electric field.

  • The thrust axis alignment of the launch vehicle is very important because of the misalignment causes the unstable attitude control and results in mission failure. Generally, optical methods such as digital theodolite and laser tracker and mechanical method such as turn table method are used to thrust axis alignment. This article deals with the simple method of thrust axis alignment of Kick Motor.

  • The mechanism responsible for liquid crystal (LC) alignment on solid substrates treated with mechanical rubbing or polarized UV is not understood. The results of x-ray reflectivity study of LC alignment on a large number of different alignment layers show that the anisotropy in the surface roughness of the substrate completely determines the LC alignment. The anchoring energy depends on the degree of roughness anisotropy and chemical interactions between the substrate and LC molecules.

  • Ion bombarded inorganic materials for LC alignment has been researched as it provides controllability in a nonstop process for producing high-resolution displays. Many optically transparent insulators such as $SiOx$ and a-C:H have been investigated as potential candidates for inorganic alignment materials. Even so, LC orientation on a new material with superior capacity is required to produce high-performance displays. Many inorganic materials with high permittivities can reduce the voltage losses due to the LC alignment layer that are a trade-off for its capacitance. The minimum voltage for device operation can be applied to the LC under low external voltage using these materials. This means that low power consumption for LCD applications can be achieved using a high-k alignment structure in which the LC can be driven effectively with a low threshold voltage. Among the many other potential high-k oxides, HfO2 is considered to be one of the most promising due to its remarkable properties of high dielectric constant, relatively low leakage current, large band gap (5.68 eV), and high transparency. Due to these characteristics, HfO2 can be used in LC alignment to increase the capacitance of the inorganic alignment layer for low-voltage driving of LCs.

  • A general process of electronic assembly is composed of a series of geometric alignments and bonding/screwing processes. After assembly, the function is tested in a following process of inspection. However, assembly of micro-optic devices requires both processes to be performed in equipment. Coarse geometric alignment is made by using vision and optical function is improved by the following fine motion based on feedback of tunable laser interferometer. The general system is composed of a precision robot system for 3D assembly, a 3D vision guided system for geometric alignment and an optical feedback system with a tunable laser. In this study, we propose a new fast alignment algorithm of micro-optic devices for both of visual and optical alignments. The main goal is to find a fastest alignment process and algorithms with state-of-the-art technology. We propose a new approach with an optimal sequence of processes, a visual alignment algorithm and a search algorithm for an optimal optical alignment. A system is designed to show the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method.

  • For inertial navigation systems, initial information such as position, velocity and attitude is required for navigation. Self-alignment is the process to determine initial attitude on stationary condition using inertial measurements such as accelerations and angular rates. The accuracy of self-alignment is determined by inertial sensor error. As soon as an inertial navigation system is powered on, the temperature of accelerometer rises rapidly until temperature stabilization. It causes acceleration error which is called temperature stabilizing error of accelerometer. Therefore, temperature stabilizing error degrades the alignment accuracy and also increases alignment time. This paper suggests a method to calculate azimuthal attitude using curve fitting of horizontal control angular rate in fixed-gain self-alignment. It is verified by simulation and experiment that the accuracy is improved and the alignment time is reduced using the proposed method under existence of the temperature stabilizing error.
