In this article, a harmony search algorithm is presented for optimum design of steel frame structures. Harmony search is a meta-heuristic search method which has been developed recently. It is based on the analogy between the performance process of natural music and searching for solutions of optimization problems. The design algorithms obtain minimum weight frames by selecting suitable sections from a standard set of steel sections such as American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) wide-flange (W) shapes. Stress constraints of AISC Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) and AISC Allowable Stress Design (ASD) specifications, maximum (lateral displacement) and interstorey drift constraints, and also size constraint for columns were imposed on frames. The results of harmony search algorithm were compared to those of the other optimization algorithms such as genetic algorithm, optimality criterion and simulated annealing for two planar and two space frame structures taken from the literature. The comparisons showed that the harmony search algorithm yielded lighter designs for the design examples presented.

In FIR (Finite Impulse Response) filter applications, Nth-band FIR digital filters are known to be important due to their reduced computational requirements. The conventional methods for designing FIR filters use iterative approaches such as the well-known Parks-Mcclellan algorithm. the Parks-Mcclellan algorithm is also used to design Nth-band FIR digital filters. But a disadvantage of the Parks-McClellan algorithm Is that it needs a good amount of design time. This paper describes a direct design method for third-band FIR Filters using Chebyshev polynomial, which provide a reduction in design time over indirect methods such as the Parks-McClellan algorithm. The response of the resulting filter is equi-ripple in passband. The proposed method of design produces a passband response that is equi-ripple to within a minuscule error, compare to that of the Parks-McClellan algorithm.

This paper shows the optimal design methodology for the fluid engine mount by the artificial life algorithm. The design has been commonly modified by trial and error because there is many design parameters that can be varied in order to minimize transmissibility at the desired fundamental resonant and notch frequencies. The application of trial and error method to optimization of the fluid mount is a great work. Many combinations of parameters are possible to give us the desired resonant and notch frequencies, but the question is which combination Provides the lowest resonant peak and notch depth. In this study the enhanced artificial life algorithm is applied to get the desired fundamental resonant and notch frequencies of a fluid mount and to minimize transmissibility at these frequencies. The present hybrid algorithm is the synthesis of and artificial life algorithm with the random tabu (R-tabu) search method. The hybrid algorithm has some advantages, which is not only faster than the conventional artificial life algorithm, but also gives a more accurate solution. In addition, this algorithm can find all globa1 optimum solutions. The results show that the performance of the optimized mount compared with the original mount is improved significantly.

In many optimal methods for the structural design, the structural analysis is performed with the given design parameters. Then the design sensitivity is calculated based on its structural anaysis results. There-after, the design parameters are changed iteratively. But genetic algorithm is a optimal searching technique which is not depend on design sensitivity. This method uses for many design para- meter groups which are generated by a designer. The generated design parameter groups are become initial population, and then the fitness of the all design parameters are calculated. According to the fitness of each parameter, the design parameters are optimized through the calculation of reproduction process, degradation and interchange, and mutation. Those are the basic operation of the genetic algorithm. The changing process of population is called a generation. The basic calculation process of genetic algorithm is repeatly accepted to every generation. Then the fitness value of the element of a generation becomes maximum. Therefore, the design parameters converge to the optimal. In this study, the optimal design pro- cess of a machine tool structure for static loading is presented to determine the optimal base supporting points and structure thickness using a genetic algorithm.
This paper presents a generalized truncated least, squares adaptive algorithm and a two-stage design method. The proposed algorithm is directly derived from the normal equation of the generalized truncated least squares method (GTLSM). The special case of the GTLSM, the truncated least squares (TLS) adaptive algorithm, has a distinct features which includes the case of minimum steps estimator. This algorithm seemed to be best in the deterministic case. For real applications in the presence of disturbances, the GTLS adaptive algorithm is more effective. The two-stage design method proposed here combines the adaptive control system design with a conventional control design method and each can be treated independently. Using this method, the validity of the presented algorithms are examined by the simulation studies of an indirect adaptive control.
The paper represents an optimization algorithm for reinforced concrete retaining wall design. The proposed method, called Rao-3 optimization algorithm, is a recently developed algorithm. The total weight of the steel and concrete, which are used for constructing the retaining wall, were chosen as the objective function. Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete (ACI 318-05) and Rankine's theory for lateral earth pressure were considered for structural and geotechnical design, respectively. Number of the design variables are 12. Eight of those express the geometrical dimensions of the wall and four of those express the steel reinforcement of the wall. The safety against overturning, sliding and bearing capacity failure were regarded as the geotechnical constraints. The safety against bending and shear failure, minimum and maximum areas of reinforcement, development lengths of steel reinforcement were regarded as structural constraints. The performance of proposed algorithm was evaluated with two design examples.
The purpose of this study is to propose a facility layout design algorithm based on artificial intelligence concept, and then to develop a computer program which is more practical than any other conventional facility layout design systems. The algorithm is composed of five step layout procedures; knowledge and data input, knowledge interpretation, priority determination, inference of layout design, and evaluation, In the step of priority determination, the algorithm is divided into single row and multi row layout problem. In the step of inference of layout design, alternatives are generated by constraints-directed reasoning and depth first search method based on artificial intelligence concept. Alternatives are evaluated by the moving cost and relationship value by interactive man-machine interface in the step of evaluation. As a case study, analytical considerations over conventional programs such as CRAFT and CORELAP was investigated and compared with algorithm propsed in this study. The proposed algorithm in this study will give useful practical tool for layout planner. The computer progran was written in C language for IBM PC-AT.
The addition of traditional elements can enhance the uniqueness of visual communication design. This paper briefly introduced visual communication and applications of traditional elements in visual communication design and applied paper cuts, a handmade graphic element, to the logo design of Dezhou University's 50th anniversary. The convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithm and the analytic hierarchy process method were applied to evaluation analysis and compared with the support vector machine (SVM) algorithm. The results of the CNN algorithm on the test set verified its effectiveness. The evaluation results of the CNN algorithm were similar to the manual evaluation results, further proving the effectiveness and high efficiency of the CNN algorithm. The hierarchical analysis and the analysis of the assessment results of the CNN algorithm found that the two logo designs made full use of paper cuts.
This paper proposes two measurement methods for injured rate of fish surface using color image segmentation method based on K-means clustering algorithm and Otsu's threshold algorithm. To do this task, the following steps are done. Firstly, an RGB color image of the fish is obtained by the CCD color camera and then converted from RGB to HSI. Secondly, the S channel is extracted from HSI color space. Thirdly, by applying the K-means clustering algorithm to the HSI color space and applying the Otsu's threshold algorithm to the S channel of HSI color space, the binary images are obtained. Fourthly, morphological processes such as dilation and erosion, etc. are applied to the binary image. Fifthly, to count the number of pixels, the connected-component labeling is adopted and the defined injured rate is gotten by calculating the pixels on the labeled images. Finally, to compare the performances of the proposed two measurement methods based on the K-means clustering algorithm and the Otsu's threshold algorithm, the edge detection of the final binary image after morphological processing is done and matched with the gray image of the original RGB image obtained by CCD camera. The results show that the detected edge of injured part by the K-means clustering algorithm is more close to real injured edge than that by the Otsu' threshold algorithm.
Two cases of design are performed for the hyperbolic paraboloid saddle shell (Lin-Scordelis saddle shell) and the hyperbolic cooling tower (Grand Gulf cooling tower) to check the design strength against a consistent design load, therefore to verify the adequacy of the design algorithm. An iterative numerical computational algorithm is developed for combined membrane and flexural forces, which is based on equilibrium consideration for the limit state of reinforcement and cracked concrete. The design algorithm is implemented in a finite element analysis computer program developed by Mahmoud and Gupta. The amount of reinforcement is then determined at the center of each element by an elastic finite element analysis with the design ultimate load. Based on ultimate nonlinear analyses performed with designed saddle shell, the analytically calculated ultimate load exceeded the design ultimate load from 7% to 34% for analyses with various magnitude of tension stiffening. For the cooling tower problem the calculated ultimate load exceeded the design ultimate load from 26% to 63% with similar types of analyses. Since the effective tension stiffening would vary over the life of the shells due to environmental factors, a degree of uncertainty seems inevitable in calculating the actual failure load by means of numerical analysis. Even though the ultimate loads are strongly dependent on the tensile properties of concrete, the calculated ultimate loads are higher than the design ultimate loads for both design cases. For the cases designed, the design algorithm gives a lower bound on the design ultimate load with respect to the lower bound theorem. This shows the adequacy of the design algorithm developed, at least for the shells studied. The presented design algorithm for the combined membrane and flexural forces can be evolved as a general design method for reinforced concrete plates and shells through further studies involving the performance of multiple designs and the analyses of differing shell configurations.
