Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors that influence problematic drinking among adolescents in South Korea. The first aim of this study was to examined the problematic drinking status according to ocio-demographics characteristics, mental-health, and health behavior factors. The second aim was to identify factors affecting problematic drinking. Methods: Using statistics from the $11^{th}$(2015) Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey, any variations among the subjects were presented by percentages and analyzed by $x^2$-tests, and then logistic regression analysis was conducted. Results: In the final model, gender, economic status, weekly allowance, father's education level, experience of sadness, smoking, and consumption of high-caffeine drinks were all significantly associated with problematic drinking. Conclusions: Awareness of teenagers regarding the potential health effects of problematic drinking, in particular in regards to mixing smoking and high-caffeine drinks with consumption of alcoholic beverages, should be increased through health education. Teenagers need to be taught the physical and mental dangers of drinking. A program that can teach proper drinking habits and prevent excessive drinking is needed. It should be a national matter just like the smoking policy.
Objective: This study aimed to understand workplace drinking environment on drinking behaviors among female employees and thereby attempt to lay a ground for future prevention of drinking problems triggered by workplace environment. For the purposes of the study, variables related to drinking behavior and the actual conditions of female employees were explored. And the study examined the effects of individual and environmental factors on drinking behavior. Methods: The sample included 400 female and male employees in enterprises and organizations located in the metropolitan area of Korea. An in-depth interview was conducted to explore workplace variables related to female drinking, and a self-administered questionnaire was conducted to examine the relationship between workplace variables and drinking behaviors (alcohol consumption, risky drinking, and binge drinking frequencies). Results: Major findings of the study are as follows: First, positive function of drinking and drinking culture at workplace and the pressure to drink were derived from in-depth interviews. Second, 47.2% of female employees were current drinkers and 20.4% were risky drinkers. Third, drinking norms and attitude at workplace, influence of peer group, and drinking culture at workplace were found to be predictive factors of harmful drinking. Fourth, drinking expectancy and drinking norms and attitude at the workplace were found to influence drinking binge frequencies. Conclusion: The study indicates the importance of the workplace environmental factors in female employee's drinking behavior, and addresses the need for interventions geared toward changing the workplace environment regarding alcohol use.
Objectives: This is to review drinking behavior and policies to reduce harms caused by alcohol use in Korea and to discuss their implications from a health promotion perspective. Methods: A purported selection was made to include extant literature on drinking behaviors and alcohol control policies into this review. For drinking behaviors reports of national health statistics were used while reports of alcohol control policies submitted to public institutes/organizations were selected for review. Results: Alcohol consumption per capita indicates stable trends over the last two decades. However, percentages of drinkers with high risk drinking over time vary; men remains stable while female appears to increase. Relatively, a few data and/or reports were available about harms derived from alcohol use. Although there are alcohol policies being cost-effective to deal with alcohol related harm in Western society, few alcohol policy available in Korea of being effective, cost-effective with respect to reduction of harms associated with alcohol use. Conclusions: Policy emphasis should be shift from drinkers to availability of alcohol to reduce alcohol related harms with taking health in all policies into consideration. Both statutory mechanism and public acceptance should be of high priority in putting recommended alcohol policy into action.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors which influence health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in Korean Medicaid beneficiaries. The relationships among sociodemographic factors, health status, health behavior, and HRQoL were analyzed. Methods: Data from the 2007 survey on Health Services Use and Health Status of Medicaid Beneficiaries conducted by the Ministry for Health Welfare and Family Affairs were examined. To analyze the sample survey data, descriptive statistics, correlation and hierarchical multiple survey regression analysis with SAS 9.1.3 package were used with SURVEYMEANS and SURVEYREG procedures, which incorporate the sample design into the analyses in order to make statistically valid inference for the whole Medicaid population. Results: The HRQoL correlated with limitations in Activities of Daily Living (ADL) (r=-.509, p<.001), stress (r=-.387, p<.001), depression (r=-.385, p<.001), alcohol consumption (r=.216, p<.001), and exercise (r=.293, p<.001). Significant factors that affect HRQoL of Medicaid beneficiaries were gender, region, limitations in ADL, stress, depression, alcohol consumption, and regular exercise. These variables explained 44.6% of HRQoL (F= 215.00, p<.001). Conclusion: The results indicate that to improve the HRQoL of Medicaid beneficiaries it is important to develop nursing intervention programs that focus on psychological health and health behavior and to give consideration to differences in gender and region.
This study was carried to investigate the effects of alcohol intake on the dietary behaviors and nutrient intakes of students in university and was observed characteristics of alcohol drinking, smoking, dietary behaviors, and nutrient intakes of students. The mean of alcohol consumption was 25.7$\pm$21.7g/day and 47.5$\pm$25.8g/day, most high of high alcohol group in the male student than other groups. Smoking were high by increasing of alcohol intake. Most students had dietary problems as skipping meals, eating snack after dinner, high frequency of eating fast and instant food, and eating meals at watching TV or video. The dietary behavior problems in the high alcohol groups showed higher in the female students than the male students. Nutritional knowledge scores was no significantly different by sex and alcohol intake. The intakes of calorie, protein, phosphorous, iron, and niacin in the male students was significantly higher than those of female students. Except for calcium, vitamin $B_2$ and vitamin C, nutrients were satisfied to the level of Recommended Dietary Allowances(RDA). Nutrient intakes was not affected by alcohol intake. But intakes of calorie, protein, phosphorous, and iron were affected by sex and vitamin C intake was affected by sex and alcohol intake.
The purpose of this study was to identify population subgroups with similar patterns of diet quality, physical activity, alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking of Korean. The cluster analysis was conducted using the data from Korea National Health Survey(KNHS) in 1995, which consisted of 5,805 persons. We identified six health behavior typologies : 32.9% of the sample had a good diet but sedentary activity level(good diet lifestyle), 7.2% had high activity level but less diet quality(fitness lifestyle). Individuals in the passive lifestyle cluster(39.1%) had no active health promoting activities but tended to avoid risk taking health behavior such as cigarette smoking and alcohol drinking. 1.1% of the sample were in a drinking cluster, 17.2% in a smoking cluster and 2.5% had a hedonic lifestyle characterized by heavy drinking and smoking. The other characteristics of these lifestyle clusters could be presented by demographic and socioeconomic factors.
The purposes of this study are to estimate the stress level of university students, and to verify the relationships between stress level and drinking behavior. A questionnaire survey was administered to 430 university students in the Gangwon area in Korea from November 5 to November 28, 2008, and data from 391 students were used for the final statistical analysis. The most stressful factor was "Worry about academic achievements" (2.86 by Likert-type 4 point scale). The subjects were divided into two groups, a low stress group (${\leq}65.0$) and a high stress group (${\geq}66.0$), by the mean value (65.1) and median value (66.0) of the stress levels. The drinking frequency was not different between the two stress groups, but the amount of alcohol consumption was significantly different ($P$ < 0.05). The portion of students reporting drinking "7 glasses or over" was higher in the lower stress group than in the higher stress group. In addition, factor 6, "Lack of learning ability", was negatively correlated with drinking frequency and the amount of alcohol consumption ($P$ < 0.05), and factor 3, "Worry about academic achievements", was negatively correlated with the amount of drinking ($P$ < 0.05). The major motive for drinking was "When overjoyed or there is something to celebrate" (2.62), and the main expected effect of drinking was "Drinking enables me to get together with people and shape my sociability" (2.73). The higher stress group showed significantly higher scores on several items in the categories of motives ($P$ < 0.01), negative experience ($P$ < 0.05), and expected effects ($P$ < 0.05) of drinking than the lower stress group. Our results imply that university students at the lower stress level may drink more from social motives in positive drinking environments, while those at the higher stress level may have more problematic-drinking despite their smaller amount of alcohol consumption.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the personal, family, and community factors that affect addictive behavior of adolescents. Methods: This study was conducted using a descriptive survey design. Subjects included 398 adolescents in three middle schools and four high schools located in three cities. Data were obtained from these subjects between July 11 and July 19, 2013 using self-report questionnaires. Analysis of the data was performed using the SPSS 19.0 program. Results: Of the participants, 62.0% were included in the non-addictive group, and 38.0% in the risk for addictive behavior group. Significant factors related to addictive behavior includes eight personal factors: alcohol consumption, sexual experience, suicidal ideation, experience of being a runaway, time spent using the smartphone, and time management skills; five family factors: physical abuse by parents, parental alcohol abuse, parental rearing attitudes [the type of rearing attitude among emotional warmth, rejection, and overprotection]; and two community factors: number of peers who practice risk behavior and relationship with peers. Conclusion: Based on the outcomes of this study, it is suggested that a school health program to decrease adolescent addictive behavior should consider personal, family, and community factors.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify variables related to smoking behaviors (never smoked, former smoker, current smoker) among college students on the basis of the PRECEDE model. Method: Data were collected from 327 college students in Chungbuk Province from May to June 2006 using a self-reported questionnaire. Result: The rate of current smokers was 19.0%. The rate of current smokers in male students (41.1%) was significantly higher than that of female students(8.3%). Also, there were significant differences by general characteristics such as major, academic achievements, satisfaction with major and alcohol consumption. Number of smokers among five close friends was 1.72 and it showed significant differences among different gender, majors, levels of satisfaction with majors and alcohol consumption. In discriminant analysis, discriminant variables on smoking behavior were the number of smokers among close friends, the referent persons' responses about smoking and subject's belief about smoking. Conclusion: These research findings suggest that we can enhance the prevention of college students' smoking by strengthening the related factors such as enforcing a non-smoking environment and strengthening college health education strategies of non-smoking including a negative belief of smoking and the hazard of passive smoking.
