A single injection of cadmium chloride (3.75 mg/kg) was made into the peritoneal cavities of albino rats. The cortices of kidney were obtained from the experimental animals at 3 hr., 6 hr., 12 hr., 24 hr. and 36 hr. after administration of cadmium chloride, respectively. The specimens of each experimental animal were prefixed in 2% glutaraldehyde-4% paraformaldehyde solution for $2{\sim}4$ hours, and these specimens were post-fixed in 1% osmic acid. After fixation, the specimens were dehydrated with alcohol and acetate and embedded in Epon 812. Ultrathin sections, $600{\sim}800{\AA}$ thickness were made and stained with uranyl acetate and lead citrate. And all the preparations were observed with Hitachi-600 transmission electron microscope. The results obtained were as follows: 1. The main changes in ultrastructures of the glomeruli observed at 3 hr. after cadmium chloride administration include loss of filtration slit and fenestrae of capillary endothelium that was resulted from thickings of the basal lamina and fusion of pedicels of the podocytes. At 12 hr. after cadmium chloride administration the Bowman's capsules were mostly filled with abnormally thickened and fused pedicels. After 24 hr. however, the only recognized change was loss of fenestrae of the capillary endothelium. And the ultrastructure of the glomeruli were almost normal in 36 hr. after cadmium chloride treatment. 2. At 3 hr. after treatment with cadmium chloride, in the renal tubular cells the vesicles and vacuoles increased in number at the apical portion, of the tubular epithelial cells, the basal infoldings were reduced and the basal lamina was thickened. After 12 hr., a number of phagosomes appeared at the apical portion and the cisternae of rough endoplasmic reticulum were swollen. At 24 hr. after cadmium chloride administration irregularly shaped mitochondria were observed in the apical area, and mitochondria with swollen cristae were found at the basal portion. And after 36 hr. The ultrastructures of the epithelial cells appeared almost normal except for a moderate increase in the number of vesicles and vacuoles. Consequently it is suggested that in albino rats, cadmium chloride induces acute reversible degenerative changes in the glomeruli as well as in the epithelial cells of the proximal convoluted tubules.
ln an attempt to define the effects of hyperbaric oxygen treatment on the lipid peroxidation and oxygen See radical reactions in rats exposed to carbon monoxide, we studied malondialdehyde(MDA) level and activities of catalase and superoxide dismutase in the heart of the rats exposed to carbon monoxide. Male Sprague-Dawley albino rats weighing 240 to 260gm were used. Experimental groups consist of Control group (=breathing with air), HBO group(=exposed to hyperbaric oxygen(HBO, 3ATA, 100%) after air breath), CO group(=exposed to CO(3,970 ppm) after air breath), CO-Air group(=exposed to CO after air breath followed by air breath) and CO-HBO group(=exposed to CO after ai. breath followed HBO treatment). The CO group showed significantly higher MDA level, catalase activity and SOD activity as compared to that of control group. The CO-HBO group showed significantly lower MDA level as compared to that of CO group, and did not show significantly lower catalase activity and SOD activity as compared to that of CO group. These results suggest that the excessive oxygen free radicals is an important determinant in pathogenesis of Co-induced cardiotoxicity and HBO inhibits the lipid peroxidation caused by excessive oxygen free radicals in the heart of the rats exposed to carbon monoxide.
1. The effects of chloroform to the tissue lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) activities and its isozymes and to the tissue glutamic dehydrogenase (GDH) activities and its isoaymes are studied using the experimental albino male adult rats in this paper. The tissues studies are liver, kidney, heart, and brain. Besides the control group, two experimental groups are studied providing succeedingly 4 days interpariental administrations of chloroform, 0.0025ml and 0.025ml per day respectively. The changes of body weights, weights of organs, activities of GDH and LDH and their isozymes of each tissues, are analysed. 2. The body weights of rats are decreased due to the chloroform administration. 3. There are no significant differences of weights of organs due to the chloroform administration. 4. The significant decreases of tissue GDH activities and the significant changes in percent distribution of the GDH isozymes are found due to the chloroform administration. This weight be interpretated that chloroform effects to the protein and amino acid metabolism of rats. 5. Due to the chloroform administration, the significant changes in tissue LDH activities and in percent distribution of tissue LDH isozymes indicating the decreases of $LDH_1$ which is the aerobic heart type and the increase of $LDH_5$ which is the anaerobic muscle type, are observed. This could be estimated that chloroform effects to the carbohydrate metabolism, particularly to the anaerobic glycolysis of rats.
The nutrients such as protein, calcium, iron and all three of them, either by natural or chemical substances were added to the recipes of yeast breads. Acceptability test was carried for the each formulated bread before selecting eight experimental diets. Sixty albino rats were separated into ten dietary groups including eight enriched breads and two control diets of plain breads from the market, which were used as the carbohydrate sources of the each basal diet. Experimental regime was seven weeks. The growth rate, hematology, total serum protein and organ weights we compared. Generally animals on the enriched bread showed the better growth rate than the rats fed control diet. Diet H enriched protein, iron and calcium by natural foods, brought up the highest weight gain among all of the rats. Hemoglobin concentrations of the rats on the diet H and G (enriched with three nutrients by chemicals) were 14.3 and 14.2 gram % comparing with other two control groups (12.9 and 13.1 gram%). Rats on diet K (fed nothing but diet H enriched bread) showed the significantly higher growth rate, total serum protein and hemoglobin level than these on the diet L (fed only plain bread from the market).

The effects of DFP(Dietary Fiber Preparation) extracted from naked barley on the lipid metabolism of rats were investigated. 1. The composition of DFP was determined as cellulose 19.3%, hemicellulose 58.7%, lignin 10.5 % on dry weight basis. 2. DFP had no significant effect on the growth of rats. (p>0.05) 3. DFP had no significant effects on the composition of serum lipid and the lipid content per g of liver in rats, but caused significant decrease in serum and liver cholesterol levels of rats to a certain degree. (p<0.05)
The amount of total lipids nad phospholipids in the rat liver and brain after sodium nitrite treatment was measured together with the composition ratio of phospholipids. The results obtained were as follows : 1) The amount of total lipids and phospholipids was decreased significantly and this decrease was more outstanding in the rat brain liver. 2) The amount of phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, and sphingomyelin was decreased, whereas that of phosphatidylinositol and diphosphatidylglycerol nitrite treatment of 120mg/kg/day concentration brings inhibition of lipid metabolism in the rat liver and brain.
The author observed the distribution of mast cells in the hard palate wound healing of healthy male albino rats weighing about 100gm. The mild wounds were made antero-posterior linealy by sugical knife.
The results were as follow :
1. At the from three days to five days after wound, the number of mast cells were markedly increased.
2. In the wound healing process, mast cells were more distributed in the lamina propria than in the submucosa.
The auther observed the effect of dietary magnesium dificiency on the periodontal ligament of albino rats. The experimental animals wre fed with a diet deficient in magnesium for 1,2 and 3weeks.
The sections were stained van Gieson, Mallory azan. Massons-Gomori's one step trichrom. Biolschowsky-Gomori, PAS reaction and Halmi stain.
After 2 and 3weeks with dietary magnesium deficiency, argyrophilic fiber of periodontal ligament were showed increased-reactivity.
Oxytalan fibers were not changed by magnesium deficiency.
To observe the effect of cortison on the oxytalan fibers of the periodontal membrane, the albino rats of each groups were injected intramuscularly with 2.5mg. of cortison/kg. body weight daily for 3,7,10,14, and 21 days. After 14 days of cortison administration, the distributions of the oxytalan fibers were irrgular. In their path from cementum to alveolar bone, the fibers pass wave-like. Their density was loose and their stain ability was lesser than the normal. Prolonged administration of cortison impaired the development and the normal form of the oxytalan fibers.
