Effect of Large $\alpha$-Silicon Carbide Seed Grains on Microstructure and Fracture Toughness of Pressureless-Sintered $\alpha$-Silicon Carbide

  • ${\alpha}-SiC$ powder with or without the addition of 0.1 wt% of large ${\alpha}-SiC$ partices(seeds) was pressureless-sintered at $1950^{\circ}C$ for 0.5, 2, and 4 h using $Y_3Al_5 O_{12}$ (yttrium aluminum garnet, YAG) as a sintering aid. The materials without seeds had an equiaxed grain struture. In contrast, the materials with seeds sintered for 2 and 4 h had a duplex microstructure with large elongated grains and amall equiaxed grains. Addition of large ${\alpha}-SiC$ seeds into ${\alpha}-SiC$ accelerated the grain growth of some ${\alpha}-SiC$ grains during sintering and resulted in the increased fracture toughness of the sintered materials. The fracture toughnesses of materials with or without seeds sintered for 4 h were 6.6 and $5.2 MPa \;m^{12}$, respectively.

상압소결에 의해 제조한 $\beta$-Sic+39vol.%$ZrB_2$ 복합체의 특성 (Properties of the $\beta$-Sic+39vol.%$ZrB_2$ Composites Prepared by the Pressureless-Sintering)

  • The $\beta$-SiC+$ZrB_2$ ceramic composites were pressureless-sintered and annealed by adding 4, 8, 12wt% $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_{3}$(6 : 4wt%) powder as a liquid forming additives at $1800^{\circ}C$ for 4h. The relative density is over 79.3% of the theoretical density and phase analysis of the composites by XRD revealed of $\alpha$-SiC(6H, 4H), $ZrB_2$, $Al_{5}Y_{2}O_{12}$ and $\beta$-SiC(15R). Flexural strength showed the highest of 301.33MPa for composites added with 8wt% $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_{3}$ additives at room temperature. Owing to crack deflection and crack bridging of fracture toughness mechanism, the fracture toughness showed the highest of $3.6979MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ for composites added with 8wt% $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_{3}$ additives at room temperature. The electrical resistivity was measured by the Pauw method from $25^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$. The electrical resistivity of the composites showed the PTCR(Positive Temperature Coefficient Resistivity).

폴리머 고착공정을 통한 저온소성기판용 Anorthite의 제조 (Fabrication of Anorthite for Low-Firing Ceramic Substrate by PVA Steric-Entrapment Route)

  • A homogeneous and stable, amorphous-type, anorthite (CaO $Al_2$$O_3$ $2SiO_2$)powder was synthesized by an organic-inorganic steric entrapment route. Polyvinyl alcohol ( PVA) was used as an organic carrier for the precursor ceramic gel. The PVA content, its degree of polymerization and type of silica sol had a significant influence on the calcination and crystallization behavior of the precursors. For densifiction and crystallization at low temperature, porous and soft, amorphous-type anorthite powder was planetary milled for 20h. The milled powder crystallized to stable anorthite phase and densified to a relative density of 94% below $1000^{\circ}C$. In the development of crystalline phases of the planetary milled powder, omisteinbergite phase was unusually observed at $900^{\circ}C$, and then anorthite was observed at $950^{\circ}C$. The sintered anorthite had a thermal expansion coefficient of $4.6$\times$10^{-6}$ /$^{\circ}C$ and a dielectric constant of 7.5 at 1 MHz. Finally, the anorthite synthesized by the new process is expected to be an useful material for low-firing ceramic substrate.

  • Aluminum alloys are widely utilized in diverse industries, such as automobiles, aerospace, and architecture, owing to their high specific strength and resistance to oxidation. However, to meet the increasing demands of the industry, it is necessary to design new aluminum alloys with excellent properties. Thus, a new method is required to efficiently test additively manufactured aluminum alloys with various compositions within a short period during the alloy design process. In this study, a combinatory approach using a direct energy deposition system for metal 3D printing process with a dual feeder was employed. Two types of aluminum alloy powders, namely Al6061 and Al-12Cu, were utilized for the combinatory test conducted through 3D printing. Twelve types of Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloys were manufactured during this combinatory test, and the relationship between their microstructures and properties was investigated.

  • Si 기판 표면상태 변화와 관련된 핵생성 자유에너지 증가에 따른 다이아몬드 박막성장 거동을 관찰하였다. 표면 염마조건 변화에 따른 3가지 기판(A-Si, B-Si, C-Si)위에 동일한 성장조건으로 다이아몬드를 성장하였으며, 이때 형상인자와 관련된 자유에너지 관계는 ${\Delta}G_{A-Si}<{\Delta}G_{B-Si}<{\Delta}G_{C-Si}$이다. AES, SEM, XRD, RHEED에 의해 각각의 박막 A, B, C를 조사한 결과, 핵생성 자유에너지가 가장 적은 A 박막은 (100) (110) 면이 지배적인 고품위 다이아몬드 박막이다. 자유에너지가 A에 비해 다소 적은 B 박막은 (111) 면이 지배적인 8면체 다이아몬드 박막이고, 자유에너지가 자장 적은 C 박막은 흑연이 많이 함유된 구상의 다이아몬드이다.

명반 및 수산화 알루미늄을 이용한 ${\alpha}$-Al$_2$O$_3$의 합성 (I) 규산 알루미늄광으로부터 순수한 ${\alpha}$-Al$_2$O$_3$ 추출을 위한 용해도 모델 계산 및 실험적 검증 (Alum and Hydroxide Routes to ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ (I) Calculation of Solubility Diagram for Extracting the Pure Alumina from Alumino-Silicate and its Experimetal Confirmation)

  • 천연규산 알루미늄광인 힐로이사이트 광물로부터 고순도 ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$를 합성하기 위해 황산용액을 사용한 습식합성법을 이용하였다. 추출된 황산 알루미늄 용액내에 존재하는 각종 불순물을 제거하기 위해 각 금속이온의 수산화물과 탄산화물의 형성을 고려, pH에 따른 용해도곡선을 도시하였다. 이를 기초로 ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$의 전구물질인 순수한 암모니움 명반은 pH = 1.5∼2.5에서, 수산화 알루미늄은 pH = 6∼8에서 각각 합성하였으며, 이로부터 얻어진 ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$의 순도는99.7${\%}$와 99.0${\%}$였다. 여기서 불순물에 대한 정제효과는 암모니움 명반으로부터 합성된 경우(Na = 0.047${\%}$, Si = 0.092${\%}$)가 수산화 알루미늄으로부터 합성된 경우Na = 0.29${\%}$, Si = 0.12${\%}$)보다 매우 높은 결과를 보였다.

렌즈절삭용 탄화규소계 공구의 크랙전파 거동 (Crack Path Behavior of SiC Based Tools for Spectacle Lens Cutting)

  • 렌즈 절삭공구의 기계적 특성을 향상시키는 기구에 관한 연구를 하기 위해, 탄화규소와 탄화티타늄을 주재료로 사용되었다. 또한, 소결첨가제로 알루미나와 이트리아를 첨가하였다. 첨가제 조성비는 알루미나와 이트리아비를 1:1로 유지하였다. 이를 $1810^{\circ}C$에서 1시간 일축가압 소결 후 $1860^{\circ}C$에서 3, 6 그리고 12시간 동안 열처리하였다. 열처리 시간이 길어질수록 입자크기는 점점 증가하였다. 미세구조는 주사전자현미경으로 관찰하였으며 이미지프로그램(Image-Pro Plus, Media Cybernetics, Maryland, U.S.A.)으로 상분석 하였다. 파괴기구는 주로 길게 자란 탄화규소 입자에 의한 균열회절에서 일어나고 있음을 알 수 있다. 균열회절기구에 영향을 미친 SiC입자들은 대부분 두께가 $2.3{\mu}m$ 이하였고, 장경비는 2.5 이상이었다. 균열가교도 일부 파괴인성 증진기구에 기여함을 알 수 있다.

액상소결 시의 β-SiC의 입자성장 방지 (Prevention of Grain Growth during the Liquid-Phase Assisted Sintering of β-SiC)

  • In our previous studies, continuous SiC fiber-reinforced SiC-matrix composites ($SiC_f$/SiC) had been fabricated by two different slurry infiltration methods: vacuum infiltration and electrophoretic deposition (EPD). 12 wt% of $Al_2O_3-Y_2O_3$-MgO with respect to SiC powder was used as additives for liquid-phase assisted sintering. After hot pressing at $1750^{\circ}C$ under 20 MPa for 2 h in Ar atmosphere, a high composite density could be achieved for both cases, whereas the problems such as large grain size and non-uniform distribution of liquid phase were observed, which was resulted in the relatively poor mechanical properties of composites. Therefore, efforts have been made to reduce the grain growth during the sintering, including the optimization for hot pressing condition and utilization of spark plasma sintering using a SiC monolith. Based on the results, spark plasma sintering was found to be effective method in decreasing the amount of sintering additive, time and grain growth, which will be explained in comparison to the results of hot pressing in this paper.

고품위 페라이트 본드자석 제조에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Fabrication for High Quality Ferrite Plastic Magnets)

  • This research has been performed for the fabrication of high quality ferrite plastic magnet. The magnetic properties of S $r_{5.9}$F $e_2$ $O_3$ ferrite bonded magnets by injection moulding with a variety of applied magnetic field were investigated. 0.3wt% CaCO3, 0.2wt% $SiO_2$, 0.5wt% $Al_2$ $O_3$and 0.5wt% N $a_2$ $SiO_3$are added in order to improve the magnetic properties of Sr-ferrite plastic magnets during the powder fabrication. For carbon coating on chemical compound specimen, 5wt% polyvinyl alcohol is added, and then calcinated under $N_2$ environment of 12$25^{\circ}C$. The particle size is distributed from 0.9~1.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ which approximates to the single domain. The obtained Sr ferrite powder is well mixed with silane coupling and calcium stearate of 1wt%. Nest, the specimen is pelleted after kneading each of them with polyamidel2 as a binder. When the temperature of injection and mould were 25$0^{\circ}C$ and 8$0^{\circ}C$ respectively at injection pressure of 200kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$, the degree of orientation was 85.3% under the applied magnetic field of 12kOe. As the results, when the packing density of Sr ferrite powder was 90wt%, the magnetic properties of Sr ferrite bonded magnet were follows : $_{B}$ $H_{c}$=2.41kOe, Br=3.1kG, (BH)$_{max}$=2.21MgOe. Especially, the Sr-ferrite bonded magnet with 10wt% N $d_2$F $e_{14}$B additive were as follows : $_{B}$ $H_{c}$=2.57kOe, Br=3.14kG and (BH)$_{max}$=2.39MGOe.GOe.GOe.GOe.e.

  • Dry sliding wear behavior of electro-pressure sintered Co-Fe, Co-Ni and Co-Fe-Ni compacts was investigated. Pin-on-disk wear tests were performed on the sintered compacts disk specimens against alumina $(Al_2O_3)$ and silica $(SiO_2)$ ball counterparts at various loads ranging from 3N to 12N. Two sliding speeds of 0.1m/sec and 0.2m/sec and a fixed sliding distance of 1,000m were employed. Worn surfaces and cross sections of them were examined by a scanning electron microscopy, and wear mechanism of the compacts was investigated. Effects of the oxide layer that was formed on wearing surface of the compacts on the wear were also studied.
