  • Two kinds of bioactive glass were coated on the Ti6Al4V alloy by the enameling technique. In order to reduce the thermal stress due to the difference in expansion coefficient with the alloy with the secondary coating forming hydroxyapatite, the difference in expansion coefficient between the alloy and the two glasses was adjusted at $2{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ intervals. FE-SEM and EDS analysis showed that good adhesion was formed between the Ti6Al4V alloy and the primary coating by diffusion bonding. After immersion in SBF solution, it was confirmed from FT-IR that hydroxycarbonate apatite formed in the secondary coating was not different from bulk bioactive glass.

  • The mechanical properties of B$_4$C/Al composites normally depend on the species and quantity of reaction products between B$_4$C and Al and then the control of reaction products is necessary to make desirable composites for lightweight advanced or armor materials. TiB$_2$ is chemically inert with aluminum and has a lower contact angle (85$^{\circ}$ at 100$0^{\circ}C$) to liquid aluminum than B$_4$C. Thus, TiB$_2$ coating on B$_4$C may lower infiltration temperature of aluminum when the B$_4$C/Al composites is fabricated by infiltration process. In this study, the effects of TiB$_2$ on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the B$_4$C/Al composites have been investigated. TiB$_2$ coated B$_4$C powder was prepared using the sol-gel technique. It was found that the B$_4$C surface is homogeneously covered with TiB$_2$ having a particles size of 20-50 nm. While the B$_4$C/Al composites prepared by infiltration after TiB$_2$ coating had 17 wt% of unreacted Al, on the other hand, the B$_4$C/Al composites without coating included 14 wt% of Al. As a result, the composites infiltrated after the coating showed higher fracture toughness and lower hardness. This strongly suggests that TiB$_2$ not only lowers the infiltration temperature, but also inhibits the reaction between B$_4$C and Al.

  • The purpose of this study is to show the friction and wear characteristics on the vapor deposited coating layers on the SCM415 steel. In this research, frictional wear characteristic of coating materials such as Ti-series, Cr-series & WC/C and TiAlN+WC/C multilayer coating was investigated under room temperature, normal air pressure and no lubricating condition. Therefore, this study carried out research on the friction coefficient, micro hardness(Hv), surface roughness and wear quantity on the vapor deposited coating layers on the SCM415 steel. As the wear experimental result, the excellence of TiAlN+WC/C multilayer coating has been proven by high micro-hardness, low friction coefficient and wear quantity.

  • The wear resistance of electroless Ni-P-X(X A1203, Diamond) composite coating layers was studied by Taber abrasion test technique. The wear resistance of composite coating layers was particularly relied upon the codeposited content, particle size and distribution of particles, and heat treatment of coating layers, as well as the electroless nickel plating bath employed. In this study, we lay emphasis on the wear resistance of electroless composite coating layers containing A1203 particles(1.2~Im, 6.7hIm, 11.5lIm, 20l1m) or diamond particles (1.5jim, 5gm). From the result of composite coating A1203 and diamond particles, the wear resistance of composite coating layers is as follows.

  • In this study, fundamental experiment was conducted with various strength of UHSS (Ultra High Strength Steel) by $CO_2$ laser. And then, butt and lap joint laser welding with boron alloyed steel and Al-Si coated boron alloy steel have been done by changing laser beam feature, existence of gap and existence of coating layer to know welding characteristics of those materials. As a result, in case of fundamental experiment with various strength steel, hardening was found in the weld metal of all tested materials and softening was found at the heat affected zone of SGAFC 1180. In case of laser butt welding of UHSS, mechanical properties was improved by using small laser beam diameter and Al-Si coating layer caused fracture of weld metal. In case of laser lap welding of UHSS, Al-Si coating layer resulted in formation of intermetallic compound at the fusion boundary where fracture occurred. Al-Si coating layer caused lowering mechanical properties of weld metal.

  • The hydrolysis-precipitation reaction of mixed aluminum salt solutions of aluminum sulfate, aluminum nitrate, and urea has been investigated to obtain narrow-sized and unagglomerated fine spherical precipitates of aluminum hydroxide required for coating core particles. The hydrolysis-precipitatin reaction could be controlled to be appropriate to coating processes by usign urea as a pH control-agent. As the concetration of total Al3+ ion and the molar ratio of SO42-/Al3+ in starting solutions became smaller and also as the vol. ratio of water/solution for hydrolyzing mixed aluminum salt solution became larger, the morphology of precipitates tended to be more unagglomerated and spherical, while their size(0.5longrightarrow0.05${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) to be smaller. The optimum hydrolysis condition for coating processes was to hydrolyze the mixed aluminum salt solution, in which the molar ratio of SO42-/Al3+ was 0.75, while the amount of water corresponding to the vol. ratio of water/solution of 15. The precipitate was the aluminum hydroxide which sulfate ions were strongly adsorbed on and the maximum yield in the hydrolysis-precipitation reaction was about 20%.

  • In this paper, we investigated the wear lift, wear rate, and its transition on the Hertz pressure. In the experiment, we used TiAlCrN coating deposited by the sputtering technique and ball diameter of 10mm, 7.94mm and 4.76mm for the various Hertz pressure. Ball-on-disk sliding tests wire performed under the unlubricated condition. As the diameter of a ball decreased, the failure load of TiAlCrN coating decreased. However, a good correlation was observed between the wear life and Hertz pressure, and all ball specimens showed the infinite wear life at about 450MPa. In measurement of wear rate, as the diameter of the ball inclosed, the wear transition appeared in bigger load. However, a good correlation was observed between the wear rate and Hertz pressure. The transition appeared in the range from 550MPa to 600MPa at all ball speimens.

  • In this study, calcium titanate $(CaTiO_3)$ gel was prepared by mixing calcium nitrate and titanium isopropoxide in 2-methoxy-ethanol. $CaTiO_3$ gel was single-layer coated on Ti-6Al-4V using a sol-gel dip-coating technique. The coating was calcined at $750^{\circ}C$ in air by utilizing a very slow heating rate of $2^{\circ}C/min$. The crystalline phases of the coating were characterized by x-ray diffraction using a slow scan rate of $1^{\circ}/min$. The morphology of the coating was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. The corrosion behavior of Ti-6Al-4V samples coated with $CaTiO_3$ films were tested in an artificial saliva solution by potentiodynamic polarization and were quantified by the Tafel extrapolation method. The electrochemical parameters showed a considerable increase in the corrosion resistance for the $CaTiO_3$-coated Ti-6Al-4V samples compared to bare substrates.

  • Medium carbon steel was aluminized by hot dipping into molten Al or Al-1%Si baths. After hot-dipping in these baths, a thin Al-rich topcoat and a thick alloy layer rich in $Al_5Fe_2$ formed on the surface. A small a mount of FeAl and $Al_3Fe$ was incorporated in the alloy layer. Silicon from the Al-1%Si bath was uniformly distributed throughout the entire coating. The hot dipping increased the microhardness of the steel by about 8 times. Heating at $700-1000^{\circ}C$ however decreased the microhardness through interdiffusion between the coating and the substrate. The oxidation at $700-1000^{\circ}C$ in air formed a thin protective ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ layer, which provided good oxidation resistance. Silicon was oxidized to amorphous silica, exhibiting a glassy oxide surface.
