Effect of Si on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Ti-Al-Si-C-N Coatings (Si 함량에 따른 Ti-Al-Si-C-N 코팅막의 미세구조와 기계적 특성의 변화에 관한 연구)

  • Quinary Ti-Al-Si-C-N films were successfully synthesized on SUS 304 substrates and Si wafers by a hybrid coating system combining an arc ion plating technique and a DC reactive magnetron sputtering technique. In this work, the effect of Si content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti-Al-C-N films were systematically investigated. It was revealed that the microstructure of Ti-Al-Si-C-N coatings changed from a columnar to a nano-composite by the Si addition. Due to the nanocomposite microstructure of Ti-Al-Si-C-N coatings, the microhardness of The Ti-Al-Si-C-N coatings significantly increased up to 56 GPa. In addition the average friction coefficients of Ti-Al-Si-C-N coatings were remarkably decreased with Si addition. Therefore, Ti-Al-Si-C-N coatings can be applicable as next-generation hard-coating materials due to their improved hybrid mechanical properties.

Effect of Al2O3-ZrO2 Composite Oxide Thickness on Electrical Properties of Etched Al Foil

  • To increase the capacitance of an Al electrolytic capacitor, the anodic oxide film, $Al_2O_3$, was partly replaced by an $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2$ (Al-Zr) composite film prepared by the vacuum infiltration method and anodization. The microstructure and composition of the prepared samples were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The coated and anodized samples showed multi-layer structures, which consisted of an inner Al hydrate layer, a middle Al-Zr composite layer, and an outer $Al_2O_3$ layer. The thickness of the coating layer could go up to 220 nm when the etched Al foil was coated 8 times. The electrical properties of the samples, such as specific capacitance, leakage current, and withstanding voltages, were also characterized after anodization at 100 V and 600 V. The capacitances of samples with $ZrO_2$ coating were 36.3% and 27.5% higher than those of samples without $ZrO_2$ coating when anodized at 100 V and 600 V, respectively.

  • The electrochemical and thermal stability of $LiNi_{0.8}Co_{0.16}Al_{0.04}O_2$ were studied before and after $Co_3(PO_4)_2$ coating. Different to conventional coating material such as $ZrO_2$ or AlPO4, the coating layer was not detected clearly by TEM analysis, indicating that the $Co_3(PO_4)_2$ nanoparticles effectively reacted with surface impurities such as $Li_2CO_3$. The coated sample showed similar capacity at a low C rate condition. However, the rate capability was significantly improved by the coating effect. It is associated with a decrease of impedance after coating because impedance can act as a major barrier for overall cell performances in high C rate cycling. In the DSC profile of the charged sample, exothermic peaks were shifted to high temperatures and heat generation was reduced after coating, indicating the thermal reaction between electrode and electrolyte was sucessfully suppressed by $Co_3(PO_4)_2$ nanoparticle coating.

  • The properties of $Cr_2O_3-Al_2O_3-SiO_2$ composite oxide coatings on steel surface were investigated. The results obtained were as follows: The microhardness of oxide coating layer increased with increasing heat-treatment temperature and $Cr_2O_3$ content in coating layer. The hardness showed the highest value (850Hv) treated at 700$^{\circ}C$ for $SiO_2:Al_2O_3:Cr_2O_3$=1:1:4. Increasing heat-treatment temperature, corrosion current density became lower and coating layer became denser. The corrosion current density showed the lowest value $(6.5{\times}10^{-5}\;Acm^2)$ treated at 750$^{\circ}C\;for\;SiO_2:Al_2O_3:Cr_2O_3$=1:1:3. These results were explained by protective layer which was formed during heat-treatment. The bonding between matrix and coating layer is expected to be made mechanically and chemically by the inter diffusion of Ni and Fe. The composite oxide coating was formed by softening of the binder with increasing heat-treatment temperature. The strengthening of coating layer is to be resulted from the dispersion of major oxide particles.

Characterization of F- and Al-codoped ZnO Transparent Conducting Thin Film prepared by Sol-Gel Spin Coating Method

  • ZnO thin film co-doped with F and Al was prepared on a glass substrate via simple non-alkoxide sol-gel spin coating. For a fixed F concentration, the addition of Al co-dopant was shown to reduce the resistivity mainly due to an increase in electrical carrier density compared with ZnO doped with F only, especially after the second post-heat-treatment in a reducing environment. There was no effective positive contribution to the reduction in resistivity due to the mobility enhancement by the addition of Al co-dopant. Optical transmittance of the ZnO thin film co-doped with F and Al in the visible light domain was shown to be higher than that of the ZnO thin film doped with F only.

  • Al2O3-ZrO2(ZTA) composites were fabricated by a surface-induced coating of the precursor for the ZrO2 phase on the kinetically stable colloid particles of Al2O3. The fabricated composites were characterized by a uniform spatial distribution of the dispersed ZrO2 phase and by the absence of large ZrO2 grains throughout the Al2O3 matrix. The fracture toughness (KIC) and the bending strength of ZTA composites sintered at 1$600^{\circ}C$, respectively, were 5.6 MPa.m1/2 (for 20 wt% ZrO2) and 600 MPa (for 15wt% ZrO2). The fraction of tetragonal ZrO2 phase decreases as the total content of ZrO2, suggesting that both the stress-induced tlongrightarrowm transformation and the microcrack nucleation contribute to the toughening of the ZTA composites fabricated by the surface-induced coating.

  • The sliding wear behavior of Plasma-Sprayed Al$_2$O$_3$-TiO$_2$ Coating against Cemented Carbide were Investigated using a pin on disk type tester. The experiment was conducted using Al$_2$O$_3$-TiO$_2$ Coaling as pin material and Cemented Carbide as disk material and different operating conditions, at room temperature under a dry conditions. The results showed that the type B(250kw power) appeared average wear rate Is lowed than type A(80kw power). The specific wear rate of Specimen A1 Increased with normal load. But The specific wear rate of Specimen B1 decreased with normal load. Average wear rate of specimen A3, B3 are lowed than other but the sliding wear mechanism of edge were rough.

  • The alumina-titania composite powders coated with Al2O3 were prepared by the method of hydrolysis-deposition of mixed aluminium salt solution of Al2(SO)4-Al(NO3)3-Urea. The effects of coating-process parameters on the characteristics of coated composite powders were also investigated. As the content of TiO2 dispersed in deionized water increased, the coated composite powders were found to be more uniform in size and unagglomerated. When TiO2 powders were coated for 30 min, the optimum TiO2 content in the coating process was 400 mg/ι. The size of TiO2 particle was increased approximately from 0.7${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 1.0${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ through coating of Al2O3. The IEP of coated composite powders was pH=8.3 identical to the value of aluminium hydroxides and the zeta-potential showed nearly similar values each other. When heat treating coated composite powders at 130$0^{\circ}C$, only two phases of TiO2(rutile) and Al2TiO5 were observed. These results showed that the suface of TiO2 could be uniformly coated with the aluminium hydroxide.

Characterization of TiAlN Coated Layer with Heat Treatment Prepared by R.F Magnetron Sputtering (R.F magnetron sputtering법으로 제조된 TiAlN 코팅 층의 열처리 특성)

  • TiAlN coatings are available in various industry fields as a wear resistant coating for high-speed machining, due to its high hardness, excellent oxidation and corrosion resistance. The corrosion resistance of TiAlN multilayer coatings is better than that of single TiN coatings. Most of TiAlN coated layers were formed by heat treatment of coating layers with a non-stoichiometric $Ti_xAl_{1-x}N$. In this study, TiAlN coated layer was prepared by R.F magnetron sputtering and investigated the thermal behavior for heat treatment at various temperature in tube furnace. The formation of large particles with porous microstructure and phase change from HCP to FCC were observed on coated layer during heat treatment over $850^{\circ}C$ and it reduced the corrosion resistance of coated TiAlN layers.

Aluminide Coatings on IN713C by Chemical Vapor Depostion (화화증착법에 의한 알루미나이드 코팅층의 형성)

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify the influence of the reaction temperature and $AlCl_3$ content on the aluminide coating formation on Ni-based superalloy IN713C in CVD process and to compare its throwing power with that of Pack Cementation process. Aluminide coating was formed by CVD in hot-wall stainless tube reactor from an $AlCl_3-H_2$ mixture in the temperature range $850{\sim}1050^{\circ}C$. At reaction temperature $850^{\circ}C$, the coating thickness and the content of aluminium at the surface were increased as $AlCl_3$ heating temperature was raised. At reaction temperature $1050^{\circ}C$, they were not influenced by the variation of $AlCl_3$ heating temperature. When $AlCl_3$ heating temperature was fixed $125^{\circ}C$, the phases of the coatings were varied from $Ni_2Al_3$ to Al-rich NiAl and to Ni-rich NiAl with the reaction temperature. Therefore, in this study the reaction temperature has been found to be a major factor in determining the phase formed in CVD process. The throwing power of CVD was superior to that of Pack Cementation.
