Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Solution Treatment and Sr-Modification of Al-12%Si-1.5%Cu Alloy

  • The purpose of this paper was to investigate the effects of solution treatment time and Sr-modification on the microstructure and property of the Al-Si piston alloy. It was found that as-cast microstructures of unmodified and Sr-modified Al-Si alloys consisted of a coarse acicular plate of eutectic Si, $Cu_3NiAl_6$ and $Mg_2Si$ phases in the ${\alpha}$-Al matrix but different in size and morphology. Both size and inter-particle spacing of Si particles were significantly changed by increasing of the solution treatment time. After a short solution treatment, the coarse acicular plate of the eutectic Si appears to be fragmented. Fully modified microstructure of Sr-modified alloy can reduce the solution treatment time to shorter compared to unmodified alloy. The maximum of a peak hardness value is found in the very short solution treatment of both Al-Si piston alloys. Compared to 10 h solution treatment, the solution treatment of 2-4 h is sufficient to achieve appropriate microstructures and hardness. The short solution treatment is very useful to increase the productivity and to reduce the manufacturing cost of the Al-Si piston alloys.

Age-Hardening Behavior of SiCp Reinforced 6061 Aluminum Alloy Composites (SiCp/6061Al합금복합재료의 시효거동)

  • The age-hardening behavior of unreinforced 6061 Al alloy and SiCp/6061 Al alloy composites reinforced with different size of SiC particle (average diameter ; 0.7$\mu\textrm{m}$ and 7.0$\mu\textrm{m}$) was investigated by hardness measurement, calorimetric technique and transmission electron microscopy. At 17$0^{\circ}C$ isothermal aging treatment, the peak aging time of 0.7$\mu\textrm{m}$SiCp/6061Al alloy composite and 7.0$\mu\textrm{m}$SiCp/6061Al alloy composite is shorter than that of unreinforced 6061Al alloy, and the aging of 7.0$\mu\textrm{m}$SiCp/6061Al alloy composite is accelerated more than that of 0.7$\mu\textrm{m}$SiCp/6061Al alloy composite. This acceleration is due to the increase of dislocation density by the compositeness with SiCp and the SiC particle size. In the peak aged condition, the major strengthening phase of these materials is intermediate $\beta$ phase(Mg$_2$Si), and the activation energy for the formation of $\beta$ phase is considerably decreased by the compositeness with SiCp and the increasing of SiC Particle site.

Microstructure, Tensile Strength, and High Cycle Fatigue Properties of Mg+Al2Ca added ADC12 (Al-Si-Cu) Alloy (Mg+Al2Ca 첨가 ADC12 (Al-Si-Cu) 합금의 미세조직, 인장 및 고주기 피로 특성)

  • This study investigated the microstructure, tensile strength, and high cycle fatigue properties of ADC12 aluminum alloys with different $Mg+Al_2Ca$ contents manufactured using die casting process. Microstructural observation identified the presence of ${\alpha}-Al$, eutectic Si, $Al_2Cu$, and Fe-intermetallic phases. The increase of $Mg+Al_2Ca$ content resulted in finer pore size and decreased pore distribution. Room temperature tensile strength tests were conducted at strain rate of $1{\times}10^{-3}/sec$. For 0.6%Mg ADC12, measured UTS, YS, and El were 305.2MPa, 157.0MPa, and 2.7%, respectively. For 0.8%Mg ADC12, measured UTS, YS, and El were 311.2 MPa, 159.4 MPa, and 2.4%, respectively. Therefore, 0.8% ADC12 alloy had higher strength and slightly decreased elongation compared to 0.6% Mg ADC12. High cycle fatigue tests revealed that 0.6% Mg ADC12 alloy had a fatigue limit of 150 MPa while 0.8% Mg ADC12 had a fatigue limit of 160MPa. It was confirmed that $Mg+Al_2Ca$ added ADC12 alloy achieved finer, spherical eutectic Si particles, and $Al_2Cu$ phases with greater mechanical and fatigue properties since size and distribution of pores and shrinkage cavities decreased as $Mg+Al_2Ca$ content increased.

Manufacturing and Damping Properties of Al-Si/Gr. Composite using extruded Al/Gr. Composite (Al/흑연 압출재를 이용한 Al-Si/흑연 복합재료 제조와 감쇠능)

  • Al/15%Gr. composite have been manufactured by mixing, compacting, and extruding aluminium powder and graphite powder. Then, Al-6%Si/x%Gr., Al-12%Si/x%Gr., and Al-18%Si/x%Gr.(x: 0, 2, 4, 6, 8) composites have been manufactured by remelting the extruded materials(Al/15%Gr.), Al-33.3%Si alloy, and Al ingot, etc. We conducted experiments to chracterize the microstructure, and damping properties and hardness. The result of microstructure experiment on Al-x%Si/y%Gr. composites reveals the good dispersion of graphite. As to Al-Si/y%Gr. composites, the more the graphite contents, the less the tensile strength. And the tensile strength varied according to contents of Si: with its highest value in Al-18%Si/y%Gr. composites and lowest in Al-6%Si/y%Gr. composites. As to Al-x%Si/y%Gr. composites, the more the contents of graphite, the more the vibration damping properties. And we can get the highest vibration damping rate in Al-12%Si/y%Gr. composites which matrix structure is an eutectic component.

A study on the wettability of the Al-Li/SiC interface (Al-Li/SiC 계면의 젖음성에 관한 연구)

  • The wetting behaviour of SiC/Al-Li composite interface has been investigated by using an infiltration method. The critical pressure for melt infiltration into SiC particulate preform has been determined by measuring the melt infiltration distance changes with the variation of applied pressure. The threshold pressure of pure Al, Al-0.2wt%Li, Al-0.5wt%Li for melt infiltration are 3.94, 3.93, $3.7Kg/cm^2$ respectively, which implies a slight improvement in wettability of SiC/Al composite by addition of Li. The threshold pressure for melt infiltration also changes with the variation of other parameters such SiC particulate size, SiC particulate fraction and melt temperature.

Dissolution and Melting Phenomenon of Al2Cu according to Solution Treatment Temperature of Al12Si3Cu alloy (Al-Si-Cu합금의 용체화 처리 온도에 따른 Al2Cu 용해와 용융 현상)

  • In this study, dissolution and melting phenomenon of the Al2Cu was studied for the high-strength Al-Si-Cu aluminum alloy in automobile component. The Solution heat treatment was performed at 480℃ and 510℃ for 4hours. Microstructure analysis of the specimen was performed using the optical micrograph and scanning electron microscope for qualitative and quantitative analysis of various phases, the chemical composition of secondary phases was achieved by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and electron probe micro analysis (EPMA). As a result of the electron probe micro analysis, a plate like Al2Cu phase was observed, and eutectic Si phase was observed of a coarsen plate shape. At a temperature of 510, necking phenomenon occurs in a specific part of plate like Al2Cu, and it is segmented and dissolved in the Al matrix. When the temperature of the alloy exceeds the melting point of Al2Cu, incipient melting occurs at the grain boundary of undissolved Cu particles

On the Micro-structures of Rapidly Solidified Al-Si Alloy Powder and Growth Direction of Eutectic Silicon (급속응고된 Al-Si 합금분말의 미세조직과 공정 Si 의 성장방향)

  • Al-Si alloy powder produced by the gas atomizer showed fine eutectic structure between ${\alpha}-dendrites$, that was grown by coupled growth, and there remained small amount of ${\alpha}$ in Al - 20 wt% Si alloy. The morphology of Si in the eutectic structure was largely influenced by the recalescence caused by solidification latent heat, and that was thought to be due to decrement of the surface energy of Si. In modified eutectic Si by rapid solidification, fine twin about $0.01\;{\mu}m$ was observed and growth direction of eutectic Si was <112>. This fact implied that the growth mechanism of eutectic Si in rapid solidification was related to TPRE mechanism. Due to rapid solidification Si was soluble in ${\alpha}-phase$ in Al - 12.6wt%Si alloy up to about 3.4wt%, and the solubility of Si in ${\alpha}-phase$ reaches the equilibrium solubility stare after 60min, holding when it was held isothermally at $253-296^{\circ}C$.

  • Alumium alloys hot forging process are gaining increased acceptance in the automotive and electronic industries and hot forging is one of the most efficient manufacturing method for mass product parts. It has been investigated the microstructures and mechanical properties of Al-11.7Si-0.5Mg (KNT40-T6)alloy fabricated by hot forging process for development of connecting rod in this study. The microstructure of hot forged specimen was composed of eutectic structure of alumimum solid solution and $Mg_2Si$ precipitates. The tensile strength of solutionized Al-11.7Si-0.5Mg alloy was 217MPa. This alloy showed a good corrosion resistance using electrochemical polarization test.

Strain Amplitude Dependence of Damping Capacity in Mg-AI-Si Alloy (Mg-Al-Si 합금에서 진동감쇠능의 변형진폭 의존성)

  • Change in damping capacity with strain amplitude was studied in Mg-Al-Si alloy in as-cast, solution-treated and aged states, respectively. The as-cast microstructure of the alloy is characterized by eutectic ${\beta}$($Mg_{17}Al_{12}$) phase and Chinese script type $Mg_2Si$ particles. The solution treatment dissolved the ${\beta}$ phase into the matrix, while the aging treatment resulted in the distribution of continuous and discontinuous type ${\beta}$ precipitates. The solution-treated microstructure showed better damping capacity than as-cast and aged microstructures both in strain-dependent and strain-independent damping regions. The decrease in second-phase particles which weakens the strong pinning points on dislocations and distribution of solute atoms in the matrix, would be responsible for the enhanced damping capacity after solution treatment.

APPLICATIN OF $CF_4$ PLASMA ETCHING TO $Ta_{0.5}Al_{0.5}$ ALLOY THIN FILM

  • Reactive ion etching (RIE) of Ta-Al alloy thin film and SiO2 thin films was observed during the etching with the CF4 gas and the could be used effectively to etch the Ta-Al alloy thin film. The etching rate of the thin film at a Ta content of 50 mol% was about 67$\AA$/min. No selectivity between the Ta-Al alloy thin film and SiO2 thin films was observed during the etching with the CF4 gas and the etching rate of the SiO2 layer was 12 times faster than that of the Ta-Al alloy thin film. In addition, it was observed that photoresist of AZ5214 was more useful than Shiepley 1400-2 in RIE with the CF4 gas.
