  • Squeeze casting was used for fabricating a light metal base composite having high strength and wearresistance. Reactive sintering was used to prepare the preform of Squeeze casting. To utilize Fe-Al intermetallic compounds and SiC particle as a reinforcement, there needs to prepare Fe-Al mixed powder at 50, 60, 70at.%Al, and add SiC powder to the above mixture at 4, 7, 16, 24wt.%. The prepared mixture with SiC was reactive sintered in a tube furnace at $660^{\circ}C$ to get a porous hybrid preform of intermetallic compound and SiC. The preform prepared above was placed in a metal mold, preheated at $660^{\circ}C$ AC4C matrix was injected into the mold with the temperature of the melt at $610^{\circ}C$ After these processes, 66MPa was applied to the mold for 5 minute to finish the whole procedure. The maximum reaction temperature was increased with the increased Al amount, but decreased with the increased SiC amount. The density of the preform was decreased with SiC amount increase in the compacts due to swelling of the preform. An optical microscope was applied to observe the micro structure and the dispersion of the reinforcements. To analyze phases, We utilized XRD, EDS. Hardness test were chosen to get the information of mechanical properties. There were no significant changes in micro structure between the composite and preform. However, it was shown that uniform dispersion of the reinforcers and complete infiltration of the melt into the preform were achieved through the procedure of the squeeze casting. It was observed that the hardness of the composite is decreased with increased SiC amount, resulting from the volumetric expansion of the preform.

  • In the present study, the effects of Al/SiC interface reaction and the formation of $Al_4C_3$ compounds on the mechanical properties of the Al/SiC composites prepared by squeeze casting were investigated. After squeeze casting, the size of dendrites in Al without whiskers were larger than those with whiskers. The hardness of composite materials (about 72 Hv) was found to be approximating 40% higher than that of matrix metal (29Hv), which gradually increases which heat treatment Time showing maximum hardness at 12hr. The observation of increasing number of compounds in 12hrs heat treatment suggests that these compounds are responsible for the increase of hardness. By X-ray diffraction studies, those compounds were identified as $Al_4C_3$, (Al, Si). And intensity of Si peak increased. The tensile strengh of composite materials was gradually decresed by heat tretment, which was in contrast to the behavior of hardeness. With incresing heat tretment time, the fracture mode of composite materials was changed from large dimples and pull-out form of fiber to the fracture and rupture foum of fiber.

  • Chemical homogeneity and dispersoid formation in mechanically alloyed Al-Ti composite metal powders were investigated in order to fabricate the high temperature Al-Ti alloys. The homogeneity of composite particles was able to be obtained by MA milling time more than 10 hours with the milling velocity of 400 rpm. The amounts of titanium, carbon and oxygen elements in MA Al-Ti alloys by chemical analysis were 8.2, 1.135 and 0.233 wt.%, respectively. The amount of carbon analyzed corresponds to 90 pet. of carbon contained the PCA of stearic acid. TEM analysis has revealed the presence of the rounded $Al_3Ti$ dispersoids with the size of 250nm and the $Al_4C_3$ dispersoids of cylindrical shape with a size of 50nm in thickness and 150nm in length. Also, the some rounded $Al_2O_3$ dispersoids with a size of about 20nm were found in grain boundaries as well as in matrix.

  • This paper presents a new approach for analyzing the microstructure of $SiC_p$-reinforced aluminum matrix composites from digital images. Various samples of aluminum matrix composite were fabricated by hot pressing the powder mixtures with certain volume and size combinations of pure Al and SiC particles. Microstructures of the samples were analyzed by computer-based image processing methods. Since the conventional methods are not suitable for separating phases of such complex microstructures, some new algorithms have been developed for the improved recognition and characterization of the particles in the metal matrix composites.

  • The strengthening of a metal matrix composite(MMC) by the shape memory effect(SME) of dispersed TiNi particles was theoretically studied. An analytical model was constructed for the prediction of the average residual stress(<$\delta$>m) on the base of the Eshelby's equivalent inclusion method. The analysis was performed on the TiNi particle/Al metal matrix composites with varying volume fractions and prestrains of the particle. The residual stress caused by the shape memory of predeformed fillers has been predicted to contribute significantly to the strengthening of this composite.

  • The theoretical modeling to predict the modulus of elasticity by the shape memory effect of dispersed particles in a metal matrix composite was studied. The modeling approach is based on the Eshelbys equivalent inclusion method and Mori-Tanakas mean field theory. The calculation was performed on the TiNi particle dispersed Al metal matrix composites(PDMMC) with varying volume fractions and prestrains of the particle. It was found that the prestrain has no effect on the Yonugs modulus of PDMMC but the volume fraction does affects it. This approach has an advantage of definite control of Youngs modulus in PDMMCs.

  • Alumina ceramics was reinforced by in-situ formation of La-${\beta}$-aluminate in ${\alpha}$-alumina matrix. The powder mixture of which composition is (100-12x)Al2O3+x(La2O3+11Al2O3) was prepared for the formation of La-${\beta}$-aluminate in ${\alpha}$-alumina matrix. The amount of La-${\beta}$-aluminate in the matrix was controlled by varing x which is number of moles. The dense composite was produced by sintering at 1600$^{\circ}C$ in air or hot-pressing at 1550$^{\circ}C$ under 30 MPa. Bending strength and fracture toughness were increased, resulting from the grain growth inhibition and the crack deflection and crack bridging mechanism when La-${\beta}$-aluminate was produced in ${\alpha}$-alumina matrix.

  • In this study, we describe the conventional hot pressing (CHP) of layered $Al-B_4C$ composites and their characterization. The matrix alloy Al-5 wt.%Cu was prepared from elemental powder mixtures. The metal and B4C powders were mixed to produce either $Al-Cu-10vol.%B_4C$ or $Al-Cu-30vol.%B_4C$ combinations. Then, these powder mixtures were stacked as layers in the hot pressing die to form a two-layered composite. Hot pressing was carried out under nitrogen atmosphere to produce $30\times40\times5mm$ specimens. Microstructural features and age hardening characteristics of composites were determined by specimens cut longitudinally. The flexural strength of both layered composites and their monolithic counterparts were investigated via three point bending tests. In the case of layered specimens of both $10vol.%B_4C$ and $30vol.%B_4C$ containing layers were loaded for three-point test. The results show that a homogeneous distribution of $B_4C$ particles in the matrix alloy which is free of pores, can be obtained by CHP method. The ageing behavior of the composites was found to be influenced by the reinforced materials, i.e. higher hardness values were reached in 8 hrs for the composites than that for the matrix alloy. Flexural strength test showed that two-layered composites exhibited improved damage tolerance depending on layer arrangement. Microstructural investigation of the fracture surfaces of the bending specimens was performed by means of scanning electron microscope (SEM). While layer with lower reinforcement content exhibited large plastic deformation under loading, the other with higher reinforcement content exhibited less plastic deformation.

  • For the separation of olefins/paraffins, $Poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO)/AgBF_4/Al(NO_3)_3/Ag_2O$ composite membranes were prepared. When $Ag_2O$ was introduced, the initial selectivity and permeance of composite membranes were observed to be 13.7 and 21.7 GPU, respectively. The increase in performance compared to the initial performance of $PEO/AgBF_4/Al(NO_3)_3$ membrane (selectivity 13 and permeance 7.5 GPU) was thought to be due to the increase of Ag ion activity due to the addition of $Ag_2O$. However, performance degradation over time was observed, which was thought to be due to the polymer matrix PEO. Since the PEO polymer could not stabilize the $Ag_2O$ particles, the $Ag_2O$ particles becmae aggregated together as the solvent evaporates, and $Ag_2O$ acts as a barrier. As a result, the permeance decreases over time.
