Development of Superplastic Forming/Diffusion Bonding Technology for Ti-6Al-4V Sandwich Panels (Ti-6Al-4V 샌드위치 패널제작을 위한 초소성/확산접합 기술개발)

  • Ti-6Al-4V alloy is a critical strategic metal used in aerospace structure due to the high specific strength, toughness, durability, low density, corrosion resistance. Examples of application of this alloy are airframe structural components, aircraft gas turbine disks and blades. Forming of this alloy is not easy due to its high strength and low formability. However, this alloy shows superplastic properties that allow for large plastic deformation under certain conditions. Combination of superplastic forming and diffusion bonding(SPF/DB) processes of this alloy has been widely used to replace mechanically fastened structures with reduced weight and fabrication costs. In this study, superplastic forming/diffusion bonding technology has been developed for fabricating lightweight sandwich panels with Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The experimental results show the forming of titanium lightweight sandwich structure is successfully performed from 3 and 4 sheets of Ti-6Al-4V.

Joint properties and Interface Analysis of Friction Stir Welded Dissimilar Materials between Austenite Stainless Steel and 6013 Al Alloy (마찰교반접합한 오스테나이트계 스테인리스강과 6013알루미늄 합금 이종 접합부의 접합 특성 및 계면 성질)

  • Dissimilar joining of Al 6013-T4 alloys and austenite stainless steel was carried out using friction stir welding technique. Microstructures near the weld zone and mechanical properties of the joint have been investigated. Microstructures in the stainless steel side were composed of the heat affected zone and the plastically deformed zone, while those in the Al alloy side were composed of the recrystallized zone including stainless steel particles, the thermo-mechanically affected zone and the heat affected zone. TEM micrographs revealed that the interface region was composed of the mixed layers of elongated stainless steel and ultra-fine grained Al alloy with lamella structure and intermetallic compound layer. Thickness of the intermetallic layer was approximately 300nm and was identified as the A14Fe with hexagonal close packed structure. Mechanical properties, such as tensile and fatigue strengths were lower than those of 6013 Al alloy base metal, because tool inserting location was deviated to Al alloy from the butt line, which resulted in the lack of the stirring.

  • The joining methods of ceramics to metals which can be expected to obtain high temperature strength are mainly classified into the solid-state diffusion bonding method and the active brazing method. Between these two, the solid-state diffusion bonding method is given attentions as substituting method for active brazing method due to being capable of obtaining higher bonding strength at high temperature and accurate bonding. In this paper, the solid-state diffusion bonding of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$ ceramics to Ni-Cr-Mo alloy steel (SNCM21) using insert metal was carried out. The insert metal employed in this study was experimentally home-made, Ag-Cu-Ti alloy. Influence of several bonding parameters of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$SNCM21 joint was quantitatively evaluated by bonding strength test, and microstructural analyses at the interlayer were performed by SEM/EDX. From above experiments, the optimum bonding condition of the solid-state diffusion bonding of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$/SNCM21 using Ag-Cu-Ti insert metal was determined. Futhermore, high temperature strength and thermal-shock properties of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$/SNCM21 joint were also examined. The results obtained are as follows. 1. The maximum bonding strength was obtained at the temperature of 95% melting point of insert metal. 2. The high temperature strength of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$/SNCM21 joint appeared to bemaximum value at test temperature 500.deg.C and the bonding strength with increasingtemperature showed parabolic curve. 3. The strength of thermal-shocked specimens was far deteriorated than those of as-bonded specimens. Especially, water-quenched specimen after heated up to 600.deg. C was directly fractured in quenching.

Corrosion Assessment of Al/Fe Dissimilar Metal Joint (Al/Fe 이종금속 접합부의 부식특성)

  • The use of light-weight Al alloys in the automotive industry is increasing to meet requirements for fuel efficiency and emission reduction. Joining Al alloy to the conventional steel sheet is also very important issue with the increased use of Al alloy, and several joining processes have been introduced to enhance joining strength between dissimilar metals. This paper deals with a galvanic corrosion in the dissimilar metal joining. Salt spray tests up to 2000 hours were conducted on a self-piercing rivet, spot welded, adhesive bonded and weld-bonded joints, and cross-sections and tensile shear strength according the salt spray duration were analyzed at every 500-hour. Self-piercing rivet joint had relative low initial strength but the joint strength did not change regardless of the salt spray duration. The strength of other joints (spot welded, adhesive bonded and weld-bonded joints) decreased with the increase of salt spray duration and the corrosion behaviour of each joint was discussed.

Effects of Heat-treatment Parameters on Mechanical Properties of A3003 Al Alloy Tubes for Heat-exchangers by High Frequency Induction Welding (고주파유도 용접된 A3003 알루미늄합금 튜브의 기계적 특성에 미치는 열처리조건의 영향)

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the full annealing parameter for A3003 Al alloy welded tubes. The A3003 Al alloy tubes with 34 mm in external diameter and 1.3 mm in thickness for OPC drum were manufactured by high frequency induction welding with the V shaped convergence angle $6.7^{\circ}$ and power input 50 kW. The tensile and yield strength decreased with increasing the annealing temperature and time remarkably, but elongation increased remarkably. Vickers hardness in welds and base metal decreased with increasing the annealing temperature and time remarkably. In a certain experimental condition, the welds line in A3003 alloys disappeared at $520^{\circ}C$ for 4hr because of the same mechanical properties and structures between welds and base metal.

Fatigue and Cyclic Deformation Behavior with the Unreinforced Matrix Alloy and Al/$Al_2O_3$ Metal Matrix Composites (기지금속과 $Al_2O_3$/Al 금속복합재료의 피로 및 주기적 변형거동)

  • Cyclic deformation and fatigue behavior of $Al/$Al_2O_3$ metal matrix composites and matrix alloy were studied. Hatigue strength Al/$Al_2O_3$ composites was about 210MPa, and that of Al matrix alloy was 170MPa. Most of the resultant displacement due to permanent plastic deformation occurred in less than the first 5% of fatigue life. In case of composites, decrease of cyclic displacement was smaller than that of matrix because the reinforcements acted as barriers to dislocation movement. Consequently, cyclic stress-displacement response curve can be considered to have these atages ; an initial few cycles of rapid hardening, followed by progressive hardening for most the fatigue life, and then just prior to failure, an instantaneous drop in stress carrying capability of the material due to multiple microcrack initiation, eventual coalescence of microcrack to form a macrocrack and then rapid macroscopic crack growth.

Interfacial and Tensile Properties of TiNi Shape Memory Alloy reinforced 6061 Al Smart Composites by vacuum casting (진공주조법에 의한 TiNi 형상기억합금 강화 6061Al 지적 복합재료의 계면 및 인장 특성)

  • We investigated the change of mechanical properties for TiNi shape memory alloy by heat treatment. 6061Al matrix composites with TiNi shape memory alloy as reinforcement were fabricated by vacuum casting. TiNi alloy has the maximum tensile strength at 673K treated and there is no change of tensile strength and hardness at 448K treated. The composites, prepared by vacuum casting, showed good interface bonding by vacuum casting. It was about 3$\mu\textrm{m}$ of thickness of the diffusion layer. Tensile strength of the composite was in higher than that of 6061Al alloy as increased value of about 70MPa at room temperature and about 110MPa at 363K. We thought that the increase of the tensile strength at 363K was due to reverse transformation of the TiNi shape memory alloy.

  • Drawability and other mechanical properties of sheet metals are strongly dependent on their crystallographic orientations. In this paper the formability of the AA 5052 Al alloy sheets was investigated after asymmetric rolling and subsequent heat treatment. In most cases, after asymmetric rolling specimens showed a fine grain size and subsequent heat treated specimens showed that the ND//<111> texture component were observed. The anisotropy of formability is often described by the plastic strain ratios (r-value) as a function of the angle to the rolling direction in sheet metal. For a good formability, a high r-value is required in sheet metals. In the asymmetry rolled and subsequent heat treated Al alloy sheet, the variation of the plastic strain ratios have been investigated in this study. The plastic strain ratios of the asymmetry rolled and subsequent heat treated AA 5052 Al alloy sheets were higher than those of the original Al sheets. These could be related to the formation of ND//<111> texture components through asymmetric rolling in Al sheet.

  • The parametric study of Steel-Al alloy SPR joint process is based on the FE simulation described by Kim et al. [10], which was validated by comparing experimental and simulation results for two kinds of steel-Al alloy combinations according to the lower sheet thickness. To analyze the SPR joint process, the friction coefficient, the lower sheet thickness, and the rivet length were selected as the main parameters. Based on FE simulations, the effect of main parameters was investigated by measuring the interlock and the bottom thickness at the cross-sectional shape of the SPR joint. The results of simulation facilitate the design of SPR joint process in various metal combinations.
