Cold gas dynamic spray is a relatively new coating process by which coatings can be produced without significant heating during the process. Cold gas dynamic spray is conducted by powder sprayed by supersonic gas jet, and generally called the kinetic spray or cold-spray. Cold-spray was developed in Russia in the early 1980s to overcome the defect of thermal spray method. Its low process temperature can minimize thermal stress and also reduce the deformation of the substrate. Most researches on cold-spray have focused on micro scale coating, but our research team tried to apply this method to macro scale deposition. The macro scale deposition causes deformation of a thin substrate which is usually convex to the deposited side. In this research, the main cause of the deformation was investigated using 6061-T6 aluminum alloy and properties of deposited aluminum layer such as coefficient of thermal expansion, Elastic modulus, hardness, electric conductivity were measured. From the result of the analysis, it was concluded that compressive residual stress was the main reason of substrate deformation while CTE had little effect.
This study was conducted to investigate the water vapor permeability of packaging film, Al- foil laminated paper, and sorption properties of dehydrated and powdered foods. The results are as fellows. 1. Absorption rate of each products was greately affeoted by physicochemical properties of foods rather than initial moisture contents of the products. 2. The absorption rate of each products were in the order of freeze dried coffee, spray dried coffee, freeze drie4 ginseng extract, spray dried ginseng extract, ginger tea, black tea, citrus juice Powder and ssang wha tea. 3. Most of the products such as freeze dried coffee, spray dried coffee, freeze dried ginseng extract, ginger tea and black tea have shorter than a month of shelf life. 4. The stability of the products were greatly affected by its desorption properties than the degree of desorption of moisture. 5. Water vapor permeability of packaging materials which are laminated Al-foil with polythylene and glassin paper were mainly affected of thickness of Al-foil and polyethylene.
Fine mullite powder was prepared by colloidal sol-gel route. Boehmite as a starting material of Al2O3 and silica sol or fumed silica as a starting material of SiO2 were used. $\alpha$-Al2O3, TiO2 and ZrO2 were used as seeding materials. The combination of boehmite and silica was found to be the stoichiometric mullite powder. Techniques for drying used were spray drying, freeze drying, reduced pressure evaporation and drying in a oven. The gelled powder was heated at 130$0^{\circ}C$ for 100min and was attrition-milled for 1~3hrs. The mullite powder obtained was composed of submicrometer, uniform and spherical particles with a narrow size distribution. The mullite powder was characterized by BET, SEM, XRD and IR spectroscopy.
Spray pyrolysis was applied to prepare $M_{3}MgSi_{2}O_{8}:Eu^{2+}$ (M=Ca, Sr, Ba) blue phosphor powder. The library of a Ca-Sr-Ba ternary system was obtained by a combinatorial method combined with the spray pyrolysis in order to optimize the luminescent property under vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) excitation. 10 potential compositions were chosen from the first screening. The emission shifted to longer wavelength as Ca became a dominant element and the emission intensity was greatly reduced in the composition region at which Ba is dominant element. On the base of the first screening result, the second fine tuning was carried out in order to optimize the luminescence intensity under VUV excitation. The optimal composition for the highest luminescence intensity was $(Ca_{1.7},\;Sr_{0.3},\;Ba_{1.0})Si_{2}O_{8}:Eu^{2+}$ which had the color coordinate of (0.152, 0.072) and about 64% emission intensity of $BaMgAl_{10}O_{17}$ (BAM) phosphor.
This study manufactured a CIG-based composite coating layer utilizing a new warm spray process, and a mixed powder of Cu-20at.%Ga and Cu-20at.%In. In order to obtain the mixed powder with desired composition, the Cu-20at.%Ga and Cu-20at.%In powders were mixed with a 7:1 ratio. The mixed powder had an average particle size of $35.4{\mu}m$. Through the utilization of a warm spray process, a CIG-based composite coating layer of $180{\mu}m$ thickness could be manufactured on a pure Al matrix. To analyze the microstructure and phase, the warm sprayed coating layer underwent XRD, SEM/EDS and EMPA analyses. In addition, to improve the physical properties of the coating layer, an annealing heat treatment was conducted at temperatures of $200^{\circ}C$, $400^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour each. The microstructure analysis identified ${\alpha}$-Cu, $Cu_4In$ and $Cu_3Ga$ phases in the early mixed powder, while $Cu_4In$ disappeared, and additional $Cu_9In_4$ and $Cu_9Ga_4$ phases were identified in the warm sprayed coating layer. Porosity after annealing heat treatment reduced from 0.75% (warm sprayed coating layer) to 0.6% (after $600^{\circ}C/1hr$. heat treatment), and hardness reduced from 288 Hv to 190 Hv. No significant phase changes were found after annealing heat treatment.
(i) The development of a metallurgical bond during the spray forming of clad products has offered the possibility of manufacturing large rolls, including those used in hot and cold strip mills. Small rolls are already being produced in Japan. (ii) Technical developments, including the use-of-multi-atomizers have resulted in the elimination of porosity from the internal bore of a sprayed tube. Bimetallic tubing can also be manufactured and the installation of a 4.5 ton tube plant in the USA should provide low operation costs. (iii) Spray forming offers a potentially low cost manufacturing route for superalloy ring/casing components in high strength superalloys. (iv) A large pilot plant has been built for the spray forming of ultra-clean superalloys for turbine disc applications. (v) Using twin-atomizing technology, special steel billets have been spray formed up to 400mm diameter with deposition yields in excess of 90%. (vi) Al/Si alloy extrusion billets with excellent dimensional tolerances are being manufactured for large scale automotive applications. Several new aluminum alloys have also been developed, including high strength, low density and low cocfficient of expansion materials. (vii) New copper alloys have been developed and pilot plants are in operation to produce these alloys once markets have become established.
Thermal spray coating process has proven to be effective at producing hard, dense, wear resistance coatings on the relatively mild substrates. Among several spraying techniques, HVOF (High Velocity Oxygen Fuel) and plasma coating processes, which are preferentially used for the wear resistance application such as capstans, have been applied in this study. The effects of pre-treatment, it-process and post-treatment parameters on the wear and mechanical properties of WC+12%Co, Cr3C2 and Al2O3 powder coatings have been investigated and correlated with the microstructures. The results indicated that the carbide coating was more preferable to the oxide coatings and the post-treatments consisting of vacuum annealing and sealing on carbide coatings led to significant improvements in wear resistance, adhesive strength and coating phase stabilization over the other processing techniques in this application.
