The microstructural characteristics and low temperature tensile properties between $25^{\circ}C$ and $-196^{\circ}C$ for as-welded and age hardened specimen by using Al 5083-H321 for base metal, 5083-5356 and 5083-4043 weldments have been investigated. The hardness of 5083-5356 weldment decreases with aging treatment, whereas the weld region of 5083-4043 weldment shows remarkable increase in hardness after aging due to the precipitation of fine Si particle at the grain boundaries and interiors. Low temperature tensile properties of 5083 AI base metal, 5083-5356 and 5083-4043 weldments appear to be the increment of tensile strengths and elongations at the room temperature and $-196^{\circ}C$, while the decrement of tensile properties around $-50^{\circ}C$ is shown. Through the observation of fine serration to fracture in the stress-strain curve and tensile fractography, the increment of localized deformation leading to promote the neck initiation and the increment of the dimple size cause to decrease in tensile strengths and elongations around $-50^{\circ}C$. For the tensile specimen of the 5083 base metal, 5083-5356 and 5083-4043 weldments, the reason to increase in elongation after solution and aging treatment is the diminishment of fine pit, the resolution of Mg into the matrix and the spheridization of the eutectic Si.
In this study, anti-corrosion effect was investigated through various electrochemical experiments after applying Al thermal spraying technology to AA5083-H321. Open circuit potential and anodic polarization curves were analyzed through electrochemical experiments in natural seawater. The shape of the surface was observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a 3D microscope before and after the experiment. Component and crystal structure were analyzed through EDS and XRD. As a result, the surface roughness of AA5083-H321 and the Al thermal sprayed coating layer increased due to surface damage caused by anodic dissolution reaction during the anodic polarization experiment. The corrosion rate of AA5083-H321 was relatively low because the Al thermal spray coating layer contained structural defects such as pores and crevices. Nevertheless, the open circuit potential of the Al thermal spray coating layer in natural seawater was measured about 0.2 V lower than that of AA5083-H321. Thus, a sacrificial anode protection effect can be expected.
Among the most of manufacturing process, plastic deformation method offers a significant advantage in productivity and enable mass production with controlled quality and low cost. From the point of view, micro forming is a well suited technology in manufacturing very small metallic parts, in particular for mass production, as they are required in many industrial products. Meanwhile, Al 5083 superplastic alloy with very small grains has a great advantage in achieving micro deformation under low stress due to its relatively low strength at a specific high temperature range. This paper describes the micro formability of Al 5083 superplastic alloy and its application to die forging of micro patterns. Micro formability tests of Al 5083 superplastic alloy were carried out with the specially designed micro forging system by using V-grooved micro dies and pyramidal dies made of (100) silicon. With these dies, micro forging was conducted by varying the applied load, material temperature and forging time The micro formability of Al 5083 superplastic alloy was evaluated by comparing $R_f$ value, where $R_f\;=\;A_f/A_v$ ($A_v$ : cross-sectional area of the flowed metal, $A_v$ : cross sectional area of V-groove). The micro formability of 3 dimensional Patterns was also evaluated using Pyramidal type micro dies.
The demand of LNG tank and the constituting material, i.e., the Al5083 thick plate, increased due to the rapid growth LNG market. To weld the Al5083 thick plate, the gas metal arc welding (GMAW) of high current is necessary to increase manufacturing productivity incurred by the multi pass welding. However, the arc welding vaporizes the volatile element such as magnesium (Mg). This phenomenon changes the Mg composition of the weld metal and the mechanical properties. The study investigated the weldability of Al5083 alloys after conducting high current GMAW. The Al5083 alloy was welded by using different size of welding wires and high current (800-950A). As the arc current increased from 800A to 950A, the mechanical strength decreased and the secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) increased. Even though the arc current increased SDAS, the mechanical strength decreased due to the Mg loss in the weldment. The large diameter of welding wire decreased the dilution of the weld, therefore increasing the Mg content and the strength of the weld. For the reason, the content of Mg in welds was a major parameter to determine the mechanical property for the high current GMAW. For the arc current between 800A and 950A, the yield strength of the weldments showed a relationship with the weight percent of Mg content ($X_{Mg}$): Y.S = 27.9($X_{Mg}$)-11.
As a considerable, experimental approach, an Auto-carriage type of $CO_2$ welding machine and a MIG(Metal Inert Gas) welding robot under inert gas atmosphere were utilized in order to realize Al 5083 welding applied to hull and relevant components of green Al leisure ships. This study aims at investigating the effect of welding conditions(current, voltage, welding speed, etc) on thermal deformation that occurs as welding operation and tensile characteristics after welding, by using Al 5083, non-ferrous material, applied to manufacturing of co-environmental Al leisure ships. With respect to welding condition to minimize the thermal deformation, 150A and 16V at the wire-feed rate of 6mm/sec were acquired in the process of welding Al 5083 through an auto carriage type of $CO_2$ welding feeder. As to tensile characteristics of Al 5083 welding through a MIG welding robot, most of tensile specimens showed the fracture behavior on HAZ(Heat Affected Zone) located at the area joined with weld metal, except for some cases. Especially, for the case of the Al specimen with 5mm thickness, 284.62MPa of tensile strength and 11.41% of elongation were obtained as an actual allowable tensile stress-strain value. Mostly, after acquiring the optimum welding condition, the relevant welding data and technical requirements might be provided for actual welding operation site and welding procedure specification(WPS).
The plastic strain ratio is one of the factors that affect the deep drawability of Al alloy sheet. The deep drawability of Al alloy sheet is limited because of its low plastic strain ratio. Therefore an increase in the plastic strain ratio to improve the deep drawability of Al alloy sheet is needed. The current study investigated the increase of the plastic strain ratio and the change in texture of AA5083 Al alloy sheet after a 2 step asymmetric rolling with heat treatments. The average plastic strain ratio of initial AA5083 Al alloy sheets was 0.83. After the first asymmetric rolling step of 88% deformation and subsequent heat treatment at $320^{\circ}C$ for 10 minutes the value was still 0.83. After the second asymmetric rolling of 14% reduction and subsequent heat treatment at $330^{\circ}C$ for 10 minutes the plastic strain ratio rose to 1.01. The average plastic strain ratio after the 2 step asymmetric rolling and heat treatment is 1.2 times higher than that of initial AA5083 Al alloy sheet. This result is related to the development of ND/<111> texture component after the second asymmetric rolling and heat treatment.
In order to investigate the effect of surface treatment(Anodizing) and rolling in Al 5083-H131 alloy, ballistic testing was conducted. Ballistic resistance of these materials. was measured by protection ballistic limit(V$_{50}$), a statical velocity with 50% probability for incomplete penetration. Fracture behaviors and ballistic tolerance, described by penetration modes, are observed respectfully, resulting from V$_{50}$ test and Projectile Through Plates(PTP) test at velocities greater than V$_{50}$. PTP tests were conducted with 0$^{\circ}$obliquity at room temperature were also conducted with projectiles that were able to achieve near or complete penetration during PTP tests. Resistance to penetration, and penetration modes of Al 5052-H34 alloy, compared to those of Al 5083-H131 alloy.alloy.
One of the most efficient designs for manufacturing LNG tank is the Moss spherical type because it has been validated through precise analyses with respect to reliability and construction safety by stress analysis. The Moss spherical tank is assembled with hundreds of Al thick plate patches that are deformed to curved shape at elevated temperature and welded together. It is essential to evaluate the amount of deflection in the Al5083 thick plate when the patch is transferred from the heating chamber to the forming die since the patch has a length of 12,000 mm and a thickness of 60 mm. Based on FE analysis results, a design procedure for minimizing deflection in Al5083 thick plate during transfer using a moving carrier is demonstrated in this paper.
