  • The flow field around a symmetrical airfoil in a uniform flow under the generation of noise was studied by experiments and numerical simulation. The experiments are conducted by visualizing the surface flow over the airfoil with a shear-sensitive liquid-crystal coating and by measuring the instantaneous velocity field around the trailing edge of the airfoil.   • Once the condensation of water vapor in moist air around a thin airfoil occurs, liquid droplets nucleate. The condensation process releases heat to the surrounding gaseous components of moist air and significantly affects their thermodynamic and flow properties. As a results, variations in the aerodynamic performance of airfoils can be found. In the present work, the effects of upstream Mach number and thickness ratio of airfoil on the transonic flow of moist air around a thin airfoil are investigated by numerical analysis. The results shows that a significant condensation occurs as the upstream Mach number is increased at the fixed thickness ratio of airfoil($\epsilon$=0.12) and as the thickness ratio of airfoil is increased at the fixed upstream Mach number($M_{\infty}$=0.80). The condensate mass fraction is also increased and dispersed widely around an airfoil as the upstream Mach number and thickness ratio of airfoil are increased. The position of shock wave for moist air flow move toward the leading edge of airfoil when it is compared with the position of shock wave for dry air.

  • Present paper deals with turbulence-airfoil interaction noise and mainly investigates the effects of airfoil thickness on the broadband noise spectrum. The acoustic power radiation from an airfoil is predicted using high-order time-domain method, which is based on the computational aeroacoustic technique solving the linear Euler equations. The homogeneous and isotropic turbulence is generated by utilizing the synthetic turbulence modeling based on random particle method. The airfoils taken into consideration are a flat-plate and a NACA0012 airfoil aligned with uniform mean flow. The effects of airfoil thickness on the radiated inflow turbulence noise are investigated by comparing acoustic power spectrum predicted for each airfoil. The comparison of acoustic power spectrum reveals that the airfoil thickness significantly contributes the high frequency noise reduction.

Flapping운동의 최적공력성능을 위한 익형 연구 (A Study of an Airfoil for Optimal Aerodynamic Performance of Flapping Motion)

  • In this work, we propose a new idea of flapping airfoil design for optimal aerodynamic performance from detailed computational investigations of flow physics. Generally, flapping motion which is combined with pitching and plunging motion of airfoil, leads to complex flow features such as leading edge separation and vortex street. As it is well known, the mechanism of thrust generation of flapping airfoil is based on inverse Karman-vortex street. This vortex street induces jet-like flow field at the rear region of trailing edge and then generates thrust. The leading edge separation vortex can also play an important role with its aerodynamic performances. The flapping airfoil introduces an alternative propulsive way instead of the current inefficient propulsive system such as a propeller in the low Reynolds number flow. Thrust coefficient and propulsive efficiency are the two major parameters in the design of flapping airfoil as propulsive system. Through numerous computations, we found the specific physical flow phenomenon which governed the aerodynamic characteristics in flapping airfoil. Based on this physical insight, we could come up with a new kind of airfoil of tadpole-shaped and more enhanced aerodynamic performance.

  • Two dimensional turbulent flow simulations on the low Mach number - high Reynolds number flow about the NACA 4412 airfoil are carried out as the airfoil approaches a ground. It has turned out that angle of attack between 2 and 8 degrees is recommended for the airfoil to utilize the benefit of ground effect. For the large angle of attack, the increment of lift due to the ground effect is faded away and negative aerodynamic effect such as destabilizing aspect in static longitudinal stability occurs and the separation point moves to forward as the airfoil approaches a ground.

  • Separation control has been performed using synthetic jets on airfoil at high angle of attack. Computed results demonstrated that stall characteristics and control surface performance could be substantially improved by resizing separation vortices. It was observed that the actual flow control mechanism and flow structure is fundamentally different depending on the range of synthetic jet frequency. For low frequency range, small vortices due to synthetic jet penetrated to the large leading edge separation vortex, and as a result, the size of the leading edge vortex was remarkably reduced. For high frequency range, however, small vortex did not grow up enough to penetrate into the leading edge separation vortex. Instead, synthetic jet firmly attached the local flow and influenced the circulation of the virtual airfoil shape which is the combined shape of the main airfoil with the separation vortex. Theses results show the characteristic of unsteady flow of single synthetic jet. Beside, we researched on multi-array synthetic jet to obtain applicable synthetic jet velocity. Multi-location synthetic jet is proposed to eliminate small vortex on suction surface of airfoil. With the results, we concluded that the flow around airfoil is stable by high frequency synthetic jet with elimination of small vortex and confirmation of stable flow. Moreover, performance of multi-array/multi-location synthetic jet can be improved by changing phase angle of multi-location synthetic jet.

Aerodynamic Performance Improvement by Divergent Trailing Edge Modification to a Supercritical Airfoil

  • A computational study has been performed to determine the effects of divergent trailing edge (DTE) modification to a supercritical airfoil in transonic flow field. For this, the computational result with the original DLBA 186 supercritical airfoil was compared to that of the modified DLBA 283. A wavier-Stokes code, Fluent 5. 1, was used with Spalart-Allmaras's one-equation turbulence model. Results in this study showed that the reduction in drag due to the DTE modification is associated with weakened shock and delayed shock appearance. The decrease in drag due to the DTE modification is greater than the increase in base drag. The effect of the recirculating flow region on lift increase was also observed. An airfoil with DTE modification achieved the same lift coefficient at a lower angle of attack while giving a lower drag coefficient. Thus, the lift-to-drag ratio increases in transonic flow conditions compared to the original airfoil. The lift coefficient increases considerably whereas the lift slope increases just a little due to DTE modification.

  • Oscillating airfoil haw been challenged for the dynamic stalls of airfoil am wind turbines at high angle of attach. Especially, the pressure oscillation has a huge effect on noise generation, structure damage, aerodynamic performance am safety, because the flow has strong unsteadiness at high angle of attack. In this paper, the unsteady aerodynamics coefficients were analyzed for the oscillating airfoil at high angle of attack around two dimensional NACA0012 airfoil. The two dimensional unsteady compressible Navier-Stokes equation with a LES turbulent model was calculated by OHOC (Optimized High-Order Compact) scheme. The flow conditions are Mach number of 0.2 and Reynolds number of $1.2{\times}10^4$. The lift, drag, pressure distribution, etc. are analyzed according to the pitching oscillation. Unsteady velocity field, periodic vortex shedding, the unsteady pressure distribution, and the acoustic fields are analyzed. The effects of these unsteady characteristics in the aerodynamic coefficients are analyzed.

수정 Sonic Arc 익형의 공력성능 (Aerodynamic performance of Modified Sonic Arc Airfoil)

  • TSD 이론으로 구해진 sonic arc 익형의 형상을 새로운 익형 형상으로 수정하고 천음속 유동에서의 공력 성능을 조사하였다. Euler solver를 이용하여 수정 sonic arc 익형에 대한 수치계산을 수행하고 그 결과를 NACA0012 익형의 공력 성능과 초임계 익형의 공력 성능 그리고 NACA64A210 익형의 공력성능과 비교하였다. 천음속 유동의 같은 자유 유동 마하수에서 수정 sonic arc 익형의 압력 항력은 NACA0012 익형의 압력 항력보다 더 작게 나타났으며 수정 sonic arc 익형의 양항비는 NACA0012 익형의 양항비보다 훨씬 크게 나타났다. 천음속 유동에서의 항력 발산 마하수 비교에서는 수정 sonic arc 익형의 항력 발산 마하수가 NACA64A210 익형의 항력 발산 마하수보다는 크게 나타났지만 초임계 익형의 항력 발산 마하수 보다는 작게 나타났다.
