SAR imagery offers a reliable mode of image acquisition over tropical countries for various applications. The Philippines participated in two missions to the Pacific Rim by NASA in 1996 and 2000 that saw the deployment of the AIRSAR instrument. This paper discusses the Philippine experience in the use of polarimetric and interferometric radar datasets for diverse applications, including hazards mapping, geologic and geomorphologic mapping, and land cover mapping. The results are discussed in the light of present efforts at capacity building in remote sensing, attempts at operationalizing the use of SAR for priority applications, and future ambitions in remote sensing.

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), which provides images of targets using radio signals, enables monitoring at all times regardless of weather conditions. In this paper, the SAR system was installed on the test aircraft to collect SAR raw data on the ground and the sea, and the results of image formation using the backprojection algorithm were presented.
Radar systems are used in remote sensing mainly as space-borne, airborne and ground-based Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), scatterometer and Doppler radar. Those systems are composed of expensive equipments and require expertise and professional skills for operation. Because of the limitation in getting experiences of the radar and SAR systems and its operations in ordinary universities and institutions, it is difficult to learn and exercise essential principles of radar hardware which are essential to understand and develop new application fields. To overcome those difficulties, in this paper, we present the construction and experiment of a low-cost educational radar system based on the blueprints of the MIT Cantenna system. The radar system was operated in three modes. Firstly, the velocity of moving cars was measured in Doppler radar mode. Secondly, the range of two moving targets were measured in radar mode with range resolution. Lastly, 2D images were constructed in GB-SAR mode to enhance the azimuth resolution. Additionally, we simulated the SAR raw data to compare Deramp-FFT and ${\omega}-k$ algorithms and to analyze the effect of antenna positional error for SAR focusing. We expect the system can be further developed into a light-weight SAR system onboard a unmanned aerial vehicle by improving the system with higher sampling frequency, I/Q acquisition, and more stable circuit design.

For the remote sensing purpose, radar systems extract the target information, such as the magnitude of reflectivity and the velocity from the spectrum analysis of return echoes through the Doppler filter bank. This conventional spectrum estimation method, FFT(Fast fourier Transform) is widely used in most radar systems. However, the frequency resolution of return echoes can be seriously degraded in fast moving targets because of the short acquisition time. Since the high Doppler frequency resolution is important in the detection and tracking of fast moving targets, it can cause very unsatisfactory results. Therefore, in this paper, the parameter spectrum estimation method called AR(Autoregressive) spectrum estimation, is investigated to overcome these problems.

The purpose of airborne radars is to detect and identify approaching targets as early as possible. If the targets are identified as enemies, detection systems must provide defense systems with information of the targets to counter. Though many previous studies based on the detection theory of the target have shown various ways to derive detection probability of each radar, optimal arrangement of radars for effective detection, and determination of the search pattern, they did not reflect the fact that most military radar sites run multiple radars in order to increase the accuracy of identifications by radars. In this paper, we propose a model to analyze the probability of identification generated by the multiple radars using non-homogeneous absorbing markov chains. Our results are expected to help the military commanders counter the enemy targets effectively by using radars in a way to maximize the identification rate of targets.

In this paper, we described about methods and results to verify the Tx/Rx beam characteristics of a planar active phased array antenna as using a near-field measurement. The near-field system can effectively measure multiple beams and predict the performance degradation due to the partial failure of individual elements. Also, it can accurately predict the EIRP relating to detection performance of the active phased array radar. We briefly described the near-field measurement method to verify the Tx/Rx beam characteristics, and then verified the effectiveness of measurement method by analyzing the measured results.
The scientific objectives of PACRIM (Pacific Rim) are to advance the understanding of polarimetric and interferometric radar and to promote its application in environmental research designed to detect and quantify changes found in both the physical and humanly dominated ecosystems on the earth's surface. The information derived is used to more readily identify environments at risk; improve environmental decision making and the management of resources and thereby lead to the implementation of more effective and sustainable land use practices. PACRIM is a collaborative research project was organized by NASA's Mission to Planet Earth, Airborne Sciences Program; the Jet Propulsion Laboratory; CSIRO-COSSA and the Centre for Remote Sensing and GIS at the University of New South Wales. A decade of working with AIRSAR data (1993-2003) in the Australia-Asian-Pacific region has provided the opportunity for more than 400 investigators from 20 countries to collect, analyse, interpret and apply state-of-the-art radar data to earth-science studies. This has been achieved by scientists working within seven broad research themes; o Forestry and vegetation o Geology and tectonic processes o Interferometry o Disaster management o Coastal analysis o Agriculture o Urban and regional development. This paper presents an overview of the three data acquisition missions (1993,1996 and 2000) and the science research outcomes achieved from analyzing high quality radar data.

This paper introduces a simulator to assess the impacts of the wind and the airframe vibration on the performance of the Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar mounted in an aircraft. The AESA radar is mounted on the nose cone of an aircraft, and vibration occurs due to the drag force. This vibration affects the behavior of the AESA radar and can cause phase errors in signal. The simulator adopts the geometric model for nose cone, the mathematical models on the rigid-body dynamics of the aircraft, the average/turbulent winds, and the mode/ambient vibrations to compute the position and the attitude of the radar accurately. Numerical studies reflecting a set of test scenarios were conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed simulator.
The radar installed on an aircraft has various operating modes depending on tactical purposes, allowing for the configuration of search areas according to each mode's operational objectives. active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar emits search beams sequentially according to a predefined search beam grid within the designated search area specified by the pilot to detect targets within it. It is crucial that the radar can stably search the area designated by the pilot for target detection, even as the aircraft's attitude changes. This paper focuses on stabilizing the search pattern in the air-to-air operational mode of aircraft-mounted radar to ensure stable target detection during roll and pitch maneuvers of the aircraft. The paper demonstrates its performance by simulating aircraft maneuvers and targets in a system integration laboratory (SIL) test environment.

Synthetic Aperture Radar is an active sensor utilizing the microwaves in order to get the requested high resolution imageries day or night regardless of the weather conditions. In this paper, the architecture of a real-time system controller for the airborne small SAR system, KOrea Miniature SAR which was developed by Agency for Defense Development is proposed considering the embedded real-time environment. The main purpose of the system controller is to control the internal and the rest of subsystem within SAR system in real-time. The main characteristics of the proposed system controller were implemented using the real-time operating system and the distributed hardware architecture for the small, low weight and real-time operation. The system controller performance and real-time operation were verified and confirmed by the demo flight with the KT-1 airplane.
