In this paper, we described the design of Ka-band planar active phased array antenna which is applicable for small RADAR for airborne and seeker of guided missile. The antenna consists of about 1000 array radiating elements and is designed to be within 200mm diameter. We optimized the spacing of radiating elements to allow beem steering above ${\pm}55$ degrees of Field of view, and analyzed the performance of antenna. We confirmed that the Effective Isotropic Radiated Power (EIRP) of the antenna can be 94.22 dBm and receive G/T can be 1.68 dB/k through the designs of RF components and the verification of RF budget. The TX output of TR Module is designed to be over 1.3W for EIRP, and Receive noise figure of TR Module is designed to be less than 5dB for G/T.

Simulation of the strong clutter occurring from the airborne radar is essential in the efficient development and performance evaluation of the aircraft radar system. If the efficient simulation of the clutter can be successful, algorithms can be proved and analyzed and also the performance evaluation is possible in the laboratory environment. Therefore, development and implementation of the airborne radar system can be achieved very economically in the effective way. However, the clutter simulation procedure is very difficult and tedious since the clutter environment changes in numerous ways as it depends on the flight path, direction of antenna beam, reflectivity of the surface, etc.. Thus, in this paper, the general Doppler spectrum model is suggested for efficient simulation of the various clutter environment. Also, it is shown that the various type of clutter in time domain can be generated easily by changing and adjustment of parameters in the general Doppler spectrum model.

When a straight-in landing from an instrument approach using ILS or VOR/DME is not possible or desirable because of topographical reason or bad weather, a circling approach maneuver is initiated by the pilot to align the aircraft with a runway for landing. Visual contact with the runway is necessary while conducting a circle to land maneuver. This research is to develop a new warning system based on a conventional marker system which alerts pilots to watch out for exceeding the circling approach area. The airborne system also uses the same receiver unit without any new installations. The objective of this research is to design and develop a Yagi antenna in a special form. The research includes computer simulations to determine the size of antenna radiation pattern and to compute an expected flight path in case of alarm to validate effectiveness of the system.

In the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the future battlefield will carry out multi-area operations with hyper-connected, high-speed and mobile systems. In order to prepare for changes in the future, the Korean military intends to develop various weapons systems and form a multi-layer tactical network to support On The Move communication. However, current tactical networks are limited in support of On The Move communications. In other words, the operation of multi-beam antennas is necessary to efficiently construct a multi-layer tactical network in future warfare. Therefore, in this paper, we look at the need for multi-beam antennas through the operational scenario of a multi-layer tactical network. In addition, based on development consideration factors, features of rotary-wing and fixed-wing aircraft, we present the location and operation of airborne relay drone installations of multi-beam antennas.

If two signals with the same single-tone frequency and differing phases impinge simultaneously on an antenna at slightly differing angles, then a large error in the angle estimation might occur if the phase difference is either $0^{\circ}$ or $180^{\circ}$. This phenomenon might arise with an airborne fire-control radar, which has a relatively small bandwidth, for a low-flying target over the sea or terrain surface. In this paper, we show that the $Cram{\acute{e}}r$-Rao lower bound for such a target can be significantly lowered with the use of two frequencies.

In this paper, we described about methods and results to verify the Tx/Rx beam characteristics of a planar active phased array antenna as using a near-field measurement. The near-field system can effectively measure multiple beams and predict the performance degradation due to the partial failure of individual elements. Also, it can accurately predict the EIRP relating to detection performance of the active phased array radar. We briefly described the near-field measurement method to verify the Tx/Rx beam characteristics, and then verified the effectiveness of measurement method by analyzing the measured results.

Since there are very strong clutter returns in airborne and ground weather radars used for the detection of low altitude weather hazards, the reliable weather data cannot be extracted from the weak Doppler weather signal without cancellation of these strong clutter returns. However, the clutter cancellation in Doppler frequency domain is not an easy task since even the fixed clutter returns not to mention the moving clutter can have Doppler shifts due to the antenna rotation and operational environment. Therefore, it was shown in this paper a simple array antenna system can be used for the efficient clutter cancellation in the spatial domain. The weather signal, various moving and fixed clutters were modelled and simulated to prove the performance of this adaptive array system. Also, the degree of accuracy in pulse-pair estimates of a weather radar was compared and analyzed from the simulated weather data.
In tactical theater, it is crucial to detect ground moving targets and to locate them precisely. This problem can be resolved by using SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) sensors providing GMTI (Ground Moving Target Indication) capability. In general, to implement a robust GMTI sensor is not simple because of the strong competitions between target signals and clutter signals on the ground, and low speed of moving targets. Contrary to the case that a delay canceller is mostly suitable for ground surveillance radars, DPCA (Displaced Phase Centered Antenna) or STAP (Space Time Adaptive Processing) techniques have been adapted for GMT! function of modem airborne radars. In this paper, anew scheme of DPCA using two passive antennas with vertical separation is proposed, which also provides good clutter cancellation performance. The proposed scheme enables us to scan straight ahead of the carrying platform that is impossible with typical DPCA configuration. Simulations using various conditions have been performed to validate the proposed scheme, and the results are acceptable.

An airborne radar is an essential aviation electronic system for the aircraft to perform various civil and/or military missions in all weather environments. This paper presents the design, development, and test results of the multi-mode X-band pulsed Doppler radar system test model for helicopter-borne flight test. This radar system consists of 4 LRUs(Line-Replacement Unit), which include antenna unit, transmitter and receiver unit, radar signal & data processing unit and display Unit. The developed core technologies include the planar array antenna, TWTA transmitter, coherent I/Q detector, digital pulse compression, MTI, DSP based Doppler FFT filter, adaptive CFAR, moving clutter compensation, platform motion stabilizer, and tracking capability. The design performance of the developed radar system is verified through various ground fixed and moving vehicle test as well as helicopter-borne field tests including MTD(Moving Target Detector) capability for the Doppler compensation due to the moving platform motion.
