  • A heat pump system is a highly efficient, eco-friendly device which consumes a small amount of energy and supply a lot of energy for heat formation. In addition, it is a single device system that has low generation effect about carbon dioxide. There are many researches related to the electronic expansion valve and the heat pump, but the detailed data analysis of each influence is insufficient. In this study, the cooling capacity and COP of the heat pump system were investigated by varying frequency of the inverter connected to compressor, inlet temperature of chilled water into evaporator and inlet temperature of cooling water into condenser. The results are as follows : (1) The cooling capacity increased as the inverter frequency, inlet temperature of chilled water into evaporator increased, and inlet temperature of cooling water into condenser decreased. (2) The COP increased as the frequency of inverter, inlet temperature of cooling water into condenser decreased and the inlet temperature of chilled water into evaporator increased.

  • A third-order simulation model of a Vuilleumier{VM) heat pump has been developed. This model takes into account the major losses such as the heat conduction losses through regenerators and displacers, the pumping losses and the wall-to-gas heat transfer losses in active volumes, in addition to the heat exchanger and regenerator losses. The working volume was divided into 12 control volumes and the conservation equations of mass and energy were applied to each control volume. Pressure drops were considered in regenerators only. Thermodynamic behavior of the working gas in a VM heat pump was investigated and effects of the major losses and operating conditions on the performance of a VM heat pump were shown.

  • Ground-source(Geothermal) heat pump(GSHP) systems can achieve a higher coefficient of performance than conventional air-source heat pump(ASHP) systems. However, GSHP systems are not widespread because of their expensive installation costs. The authors have developed a GSHP system that employs the cast-in-place concrete pile foundations of a building as heat exchangers in order to reduce the initial cost. In this system, eight U-tubes are arranged around the surface of a cast-in-place concrete pile foundation. The heat exchange capability of this system, subterranean temperature changes and heat pump performance were investigated in a full-scale experiment. As a result, the average values for heat rejection were 186~201 W/m(per pile, 25 W/m per pair of tubes) while cooling. The average COP of this system was 4.6 while cooling; rendering this system more effective in energy saving terms than the typical ASHP systems.

  • Studies on the annual performance of three different type of solar-absorption heat pump system (parallel type, series type, and generator type) are carried out by using the computer simulation. These include the calculation of solar energy from the solar collector, and the revision of computer package, developed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory, to predict the annual performance. Finally using weather data and load conditions, the annual performance are obtained. Results show that the annual operating costs of three solar-absorption heat pump systems are almost same values and 44% lower than that of the pure absorption heat pump system. The total annual input energys of solar-absorption heat pump systems are also about 44% lower than that of the pure absorption heat pump. The nominal size of the solar-absorption heat pump systems can be reduced to a value of 55% that of the pure absorption heat pump that would normally be specified under identical conditions.

  • Drying process, corresponding to a final process in the area of food engineering, requires a lot of heat energy. Thus, the energy efficiency is very important for dryers. Since the energy efficiency of heat pump dryers is much higher compared to that of electric dryers or other types of dryers, most of large-capacity dryers are adopting heat pump. In this study, shapes, positions and number of air-circulating fans, guide vanes, air inlet, outlet and top separator were varied for optimization of the flow of a large-capacity heat pump dryer. In addition, fans were modelled with performance curves and porous media were assumed for foods and heat exchangers. The simulation results were applied to the 12-ton dryer and the velocity distributions were experimentally examined. Finally, uniform drying in time was successfully accomplished through frozen pepper experiment.

  • The aim of this study is to verify the performance of water-to-air multi-heat pump system with a vertical U-tube GLHX(U-tube system) and a double tube GLHX(double tube system), which were installed in a school building located in Asan. For analyzing the performance of the GSHP system, we monitored various operating da~ including the water temperature of inlet and outlet of the ground heat exchanger, mass flow rate, and power consumption. Daily average COP of the single U-tube system and the double tube system were 4.5 and 4.2 at cooling mode and were 3.5 and 3.8 at heating mode. As a result, We know that performance of water-to-air multi-heat pump unit is reliable at actual condition operated in a part load conditions for all day.

  • Floor panel heating system using hot water is the primary heating system of domestic residential building. This paper presents the results of performance analysis of the heat pump system with air source evaporator and single unit dual sink(SUDSk) condenser. The heat exchanger combines two separated condensers into a single condenser and the object of the SUDSk condenser is to release energy to dual sinks, i.e. air for air heating system and water for panel heating system in one single unit. Simulation program is developed for single unit dual source(SUDS) SUDSk heat pump system and some experimental data are obtained and compared with simulation results. Differences of heating capacity and COP in dual source operating mode are 7% and 8% respectively. Simulation results are in good agreement with test results. Therefore, developed program is effectively used for design and performance prediction of dual source dual sink heat pump system with SUDS evaporator and SUDSk condenser.

  • When the outdoor air temperature decreased less than the freezing temperature, frost forms at the surface of heat exchangers and it makes the performance degradation of a heat pump system. In this study, a heat pump system has been developed which has a refrigerant heating device as an auxiliarly heating equipment. To reduce power consumptions of the system, a liquid pump, rather than a compressor, was used to drive refrigerant in the heat pump cycle. Ratio of refrigerant mass flow between a refrigerant heating heat exchanger(GHX) and a outdoor plate heat exchanger(PHX) was varied and the system performance was measured and analyzed. As results, when the refrigerant flow rate to the GHX was decreased, the system performance is decreased due to heat absorption capability restriction of the GHX and small variation of the power consumption in the compressor. The effect on the evaporating and condensing pressure by the distribution ratio of the refrigerant to the each heat exchanger is small compare to the effect by the frequency change in the compressor. When the compressor was replaced by the liquid pump, the capacity of the system decreased a little, however the power consumption decrease approximately 80% compare with the power used in the compressor.

  • Commercial buildings and institutions are predominantly cooled, thereby dissipating excess heat to a vertical ground heat exchanger (VGHE), than heat extracted over an annual cycle. Surface waters, such as lakes and ponds, provide a cost-effective means of reducing the VGHE length, and in balancing the thermal loads to the ground. This paper presents the measurement and analysis of the cooling performance of ground-coupled heat pump (GCHP) system, using surface water heat exchanger (SWHE) submerged in an artificial pond. In order to measure the performance of the system, we installed monitoring equipment, including sensors, for assessing the temperature and power consumption, after which the operation parameters were determined. The results from the thermal performance test for the SWHE indicate that the temperatures at the outlet of the SWHE and within the pond were affected by outdoor air temperature. In addition, the results reveal similar variation trends on temperatures; however, the peak temperatures of the SWHE were somewhat greater than those of outdoor air, due to the thermal capacity of the pond. Analyzing the cooling performance over the measurement period, the average coefficient of performance (COP) of heat pump was found to be 5.71, while that for the entire system was 2.99.
