Heat pump systems have been widely adopted in buildings for cooling and heating, due to their higher energy efficiency. Recently, the demand for hot water supply from the heat pump system has been increasing. To increase the water supply temperature with higher system efficiency and reliability, a heat pump water heater adopting cascade cycle was investigated in this study. The cascade heat pump water heater consisted of a low-stage cycle using R410A, and a high-stage cycle using R134a. A simulation program for the cascade heat pump water heater was developed, and verified by comparison with experimental data. The performance of the cascade heat pump water heater was optimized, by varying the compressor rotating speeds of the low- and high-stage cycles. At low ambient temperatures, the performance of the cascade cycle was compared with that of the single-stage cycle. The system efficiency of the cascade cycle was higher than that of the single-stage cycle, showing a lower compression ratio and compressor discharge temperature.
Performance of the raw water-source heat pump system with a thermal storage tank has been analyzed in winter season. The raw water is transferred through the multi-regional water supply system from Han river. Raw water is large temperature difference resource compared with groundwater. Although the raw water temperature drops to $0.6^{\circ}C$ due to the heavy snowfall and the severe cold in late January and early February, 2010, the system has been normally operated without any trouble this winter. The unit COP and system COP considered all pump power consumption were estimated based on the second-by-second data of the all sensors. The monthly averaged unit COP and system COP are 3.37 and 2.76 respectively with $1.4^{\circ}C$ of raw water in January, 3.55 and 2.89 with $1.6^{\circ}C$ raw water in February, 3.82 and 3.15 with $5.4^{\circ}C$ raw water in March. The performance of the system are increased with raw water temperature, and the COPs are higher than the water-to-air heat pump system using relatively high temperature raw water from Daecheong reservoir because the water-to-water system was operated on the full load condition and was stopped when the thermal storage tank was full of the high temperature water.
An experimental study was conducted to analyze performance of a heating system with variation of control logic of the system. The system uses a solar as heat source and composed with heat pump that uses R-22 as working fluid. The difference between the developed system and the commercially available heating system is working fluid. The solar assisted heating system which was widely distributed in the market uses water as a working fluid. It could be freezing in case of the temperature drops down under freezing point. The anti-freezing fluids such as methyl-alcohol or ethylene-glycol are mixed with the water to protect the freezing phenomena. However, the system developed in this study uses a refrigerant as a working fluid. It makes the system to run under zero degree temperature conditions. Another difference of the developed system compare with commercial available one is auxiliary heating method. The developed system has removed an auxiliary electric heater that has been used in conventional solar assisted heating system. Instead of the auxiliary electric heater, an air source heat exchanger which generally used as an evaporator of a heat pump was adapted as a backup heating device of the developed system. As results, an efficiency of the developed system is higher than a solar assisted heat pump with auxiliary electric heater. The merit of the developed system is on the performance increment when the system operates at a lower solar energy climate conditions. In case of the developed system operates at a normal condition, COP of the solar collector driven heat pump is higher than the air source heat exchanger driven heat pump's.
In this study, in order to utilize the waste heat of industrial wastewater in the range of the relatively low temperature of 40~5$0^{\circ}C$ as a heat source, a hybrid heat pump system was considered by computer simulation method. In the simulation, an absorber, desorber and solution heat exchanger were modelled by UA values while a compressor and pump performance were specified by an isentropic efficiency. Simulation results show that the performance of hybrid heat pump can be up to 80% higher than that of conventional R134a heat pump when it makes a process hot water of 9$0^{\circ}C$ while the wastewater is cooled down to 2$0^{\circ}C$. As the absorber pressure increases, the system performance and deserter pressure increase with a favorable effect of a compressor discharge gas temperature drop.
Along with socioeconomic development and improving standard of living, the heat demand for heating and cooling in residential and commercial sectors is expected to expand rapidly, reaching over 43 million TOE by 2010 in Korea(about 80% increase compared with that in 1995). Since most of this heat demand is loop temperature below $60^{\circ}C$, the utilization of 'unused energy' is surely one of very effective measures to both environmental preservation and energy conservation. 'Unused energy' in this paper is implicated as 'temperature differential energy' available from treated sewage water, useful and abundant heat source for heat pump(cooler in summer and warmer in winter than outside air). An analysis was carried out to estimate the energy potential of treated sewage water for heat pump heat source. Some analysis were taken to study the characteristics of a heat pump system using the treated sewage water as heat source.
In Jeju, underground air is used for heating greenhouse and fertilizing natural $CO_2$ gas by suppling directly into greenhouse. But greenhouse heating method by direct supply of underground air has several problems as like low temperature below $20^{\circ}C$ or high relative humidity over 90%. The underground air is inadequate in heating of crops such as mangos, oranges with the growing temperature over $20^{\circ}C$. Also if the relative humidity of greenhouse is kept with over 90%, diseases can strike almost of the crops. And also the ventilation loss becomes larger because the air pressure of inside greenhouse by direct supply of underground air is higher. In this study the heat pump system using underground air as heat source was developed and heating performance of the system was analyzed. Heating COP of the system was 2.5~5.0 and rejecting heat into greenhouse and extracting heat from underground air in this heat pump system were 46.5~31.4 kW, 34.9~20.9 kW respectively.
The Effluent ground water overflows in deep and broad ground space building. Temperature of effluent ground water is in 12$\sim$18$^{\circ}C$ annually and the quality of that water is as good as living water. Therefore if the flow rate of effluent ground water is sufficient as source of heat pump, that is good heat source and heat sink of heat pump. Effuent ground water contain the thermal energy of surrounding ground. So this is a new application of ground source heat pump. In this study open type and close type heat pump system using effluent ground water was installed and tested for a church building with large and deep ground space. The effluent flow rate of this building is 800$\sim$1000 ton/day. The heat pump capacity is 5RT each. The heat pump system heating COP was 3.0$\sim$3.3 for the open type and 3.3$\sim$3.8 for the close type system. The heat pump system cooling COP is 3.2$\sim$4.5 for the open type and 3.8$\sim$4.2 for close type system. This performance is up to that of BHE type ground source heat pump.
The canned motor of 3-phase induction is used for main coolant pump(MCP). The type of motor is canned-motor that stator and rotor are welded by sealed can. So, cooling water flows in the air gap of the canned motor as an independent cycling cooling system from the air gap to yoke of the motor to prevent high temperature of stator can and to lubricate bearing. Heat exchange is occurred between cooling water in the air gap and cooling water from the exterior pump to prevent rising of temperature in the motor. I has to analyze the characteristics of can exactly because the loss and the heat in the can are very important to design MCP. Therefore, thermal analysis is studied considering the effect of eddy-current los induced in the can.
This study was conducted to develop a heating system for a fuel cell-driven electric vehicle. The system consists of a compressor, an expansion device and three heat exchangers. A conventional air source heat exchanger is used as primary heat exchanger of the system, and an additional water source heat exchanger is used as a pre-heater to supply heat to the upstream air of the primary heat exchanger. On the other hand, the third heat exchanger consists of a water-to-refrigerant heat exchanger. The heat source of the pre-heater and the water-refrigerant heat exchanger is the waste heat from the fuel cell's stack. In the experiment, the indoor and the outdoor air temperature were fixed, and the compressor speed, EEV opening and waste heat temperature were varied. The results indicate that the $COP_h$ of the proposed system is 3.01 when the system is operating at a 1,200 rpm compressor speed, 50% EEV opening, and $50^{\circ}C$ waste heat source temperature in air pre-heater operation. However, when the system uses a water-refrigerant heat exchanger, the $COP_h$ increases to up to 9.42 at the same compressor speed and waste heat source temperature with 75% EEV openings.
The treated sewage temperature is about $5^{\circ}C$ lower in summer and $5{\sim}10^{\circ}C$ higher in winter than ambient air. It can be used heat pump heat source and is good heat source on high performance of heat pump. In this study, to develop 100RT 2-stage compression heat pump use treated sewage water heat source and system applies to sewage disposal plant. Although heat pump is better performance, the large temperature difference between load and source makes the performance degradation of a heat pump. To solve this problem screw 2-stage compression is considered. The experiment was focused on the system operating performance variations over supply water and treated sewage water a temperature in the field. The results show that system of heating performance is higher then general heat pump and is enough to supply a hot water of $70^{\circ}C$.
