  • In this paper, the experimental study has been carried out to investigate the reliability lifetime of two bearing units based on the oil temperature. Measurements for the oil temperature as well as the bearing temperature during normal operation were performed to study the effects of oil viscosity and oil submergence percentages in the two bearing units. The optimal lubrication condition to increase the lifetime of the bearing unit A was found that its viscosity and submergence percentage were VG32 and 25%, respectively. For the bearing unit B, when the oil viscosity and submergence percent were VG32 and 75%, the lubrication condition was the most efficient. Finally, the adjusted rating times of both the bearing units were calculated to be over 28,000 h, which is greater than the minimum adjusted rating times of 25,000 h. Therefore, they satisfied the regulated lifetime of API 610.

  • An experimental study has been carried out to investigate overheating of oil and bearing housing during pump operation. This problem is of particular interest in the pre diction of lifetime and failure of pump. Transient variation of oil temperature as well as bearing housing temperature is measured to study the effect of oil viscosity, oil amount, and discharge flow rate of pump. It is found that optimal oil quantity as well as proper viscosity of oil is required to keep the safe temperature level of oil and bearing housing in a pump. The oil temperature at steady state is almost not affected by discharge flow rate in the range of discharge flow rates considered in the present study.

  • The heat generation of the angular contact and the deep groove ball bearing is studied experimentally and numerically. The temperature variation of the inner and outer races and the temperature increase distribution are measured for the shaft rotational speeds, preloads, viscosities of the lubricant and lubrication methods. The measured temperature distributions are used as the input data of the numerical simulation to estimate the heat generation rate at the bearing. The temperatures of the inner and outer race increase more rapidly and approach faster to their steady values as the rotational speed increases. The optimal viscosity of the oil to minimize the heat generation is 8~10 cSt at 4$0^{\circ}C$ when the oil-air lubrication method is adopted. The heat generation of the bearing increases with the rotational speed and depends more on the lubrication method than on the preload variation.

  • A study on motor current signature analysis has been executed for monitoring the fault of journal bearing due to wear. The air gap eccentricity of motor produces specific frequencies in motor current, the supplied current frequency plus and minus rotational rotor frequency. The air gap eccentricity is simulated by the clearance of Journal bearing. The amplitudes of the specific frequencies increase with the increasing clearances. The amplitudes of the specific frequencies continue to increase over the wear limit that is used in the manufacturer of the test motor. Though clear relations between the amplitudes of the specific frequencies and the clearances are not obtained in this paper, the specific frequencies can be used as an indicator of a journal bearing fault. Further study is necessary to make out the quantitative relations between the specific frequencies and the clearances.

  • Ensuring flight safety for passengers as well as crew is the most important aspect of modern aviation, and in order to achieve this, it is necessary to be able to forecast the durability of individual components. The present contribution illustrates the results of a computational analysis to determine the possibility of analysing the prediction of bearing durability in on-board rotating equipment from the point of view of thermal fatigue. In this study, a method developed at the Air Force Institute of Technology was used for analysis, which allowed to determine the bearing durability from the flight altitude profile. Two aircraft have been chosen for analysis - a military M-28 and a civilian Embraer. As a result of the analysis were obtained: the bearing durability in on-board rotating devices, average operation time between failures, as well as failure rate. In conclusion, the practical applicability of this approach is demonstrated by the fact that even with a limited number of flight parameters, it is possible to estimate bearing durability and increase flight safety by regular inspections.

  • Air foil thrust bearings are the critical components available on high-efficiency turbomachinery which need an ability to endure the large axial force. Air foil bearings are self-acting hydrodynamic bearings that use ambient air as their lubricant. Since the air is squeezed by the edge of compliance-surface of bearing, hydrodynamic force is generated. In this study, we measured the air film thickness and obtained the minimum film thickness experimentally. To increase the maximum load capacity, compliance of sub-structure was controlled. From numerical analyses, it is seen that, if the air film thickness is distributed more uniformly by variable compliance, the thrust bearings can take more axial load.

  • The optical storage device has recently experienced significant improvement, especially for the aspects of high capacity and fast transfer rate. However, it is necessary to study a new shape of air bearing surface for the rotary type actuator because the optical storage device has the lower access time than that of HDD (Hard Disk Drives). In this study, we proposed the air bearing shape by using SA (Simulated Annealing) algorithm which is very effective to achieve the global optimum instead of many local optimums. The objective of optimization is to minimize the deviation in flying height from a target value 100nm. In addition, the pitch and roll angle should be maintained within the operation limits.

  • Recently, the precision required by precision manufacturing and machinery related to electronics is within the domain of submicron that it is difficult to evaluate them by traditional measuring equipments and methods. Accordingly, precision of sub 0.1.mu.m super precise position-decision-apparatus and straight-guide air bearing have been researched and they are almost ready to be used. In utilizing straight-guide-table for super-precision-measurement which used externally pressurized porous air bearing as a way of externally pressurized air bearing, the high-precision-straight movement is the most crucial. In this study, the researcher conducted the experimental study with trial manufacture to see how the surrounding temperature and support condition influenced the selection and allocation of the machine composing element which is important to the high-precision-straight movement. The researcher finding showed that when the property of the rail part and support part of the semi-closed slider form is different, the heat generation of the working motor and surrounding temperature influence the high-precision-straight movement significantly and the researcher showed the influence of the condition of central load and eccentric load to the straight movement precision when the support stand of the straight-table was supported by numerical values.

  • Recently the use of high-speed equipment in machine-tool industry has greatly increased, which requires the development of prognostics and prediction methods on the design stage. Conversion of the test/experiments stage from real to virtual reality will not only significantly reduce the design and manufacturing cost, but will also increase design quality. This paper shows how it is possible to develop the automated system for the design calculations of the air-bearing spindles. First, the general calculation method is introduced. It contains several steps, namely, geometry identification, pressure calculation, stiffiness calculation, dynamics characteristics calculation. For geometry identification reducing spindle shaft to rings was proposed, which helps to automate the calculation process. For pressure calculation the Peshti method was implemented. For stiffiness calculation the analysis was made, which shown the necessity of correct calculation step selection. Then the system of ordinary differential equations containing influence coefficients was evolved, which is used for trjectories calculation. The graphical representation of the calculation results shows the dynamic behavior of the spindle unit concerning various working conditions. Finally, this automated system is illustrated by an example of the air-bearing spindle calculation.

  • This study aims to investigate numerically the static and dynamic stiffness characteristics of porous air bearing and to estimate appropriate permeability values of porous medium. In particular, a new roughness model is proposed and implemented into the commercial CFD code (FLUENT Ver.6.2). The predicted results are extensively compared with experimental data for static cases. The roughness model is also validated through comparison with the results from open literature. For the dynamic cases, the deforming and re-meshing technique is used for describing fluid-solid interactions. It is found that the predictions for static stiffness are in good agreement with experimental data and the dynamic stiffness appears to be relatively smaller than the static stiffness. In addition, moving and dynamic analysis of air bearing seems to be possible to provide qualitative predictions even if there are somewhat discrepancies quantitatively, compared to experimental data.
