  • The study of Sealless Cylinder is presented. The cylinder has a piston with air bearing. The piston has a partly cylindrical and partly conical shape. The description of system geometry is follows by the flow rate equations. Then pressure distribution and Bearing force equations are derived. Several non dimensional parameters are suggested. The relationship among bearing force, leakage flow and geometry of the bearing is investigated by simulation. And determination method for optimal design of sealless cylinder is given. A prototype of sealless cylinder which had rod bearing with four pockets, five pockets, and six pockets was built respectively.

  • The dynamic behavior analysis of air-lubricated tilting pad journal bearing which considers start-up, running and shutdown Process were performed. By carrying out the experiment of shaft vibration, measurement of the vibration amplitudes supported by air lubricated tilting pad bearing and analysis of the result, we found more accurate dynamic behavior of the system. There were many investigations in these bearings, but dynamic behavior of startup, shutdown and running process were lacked. By using the experimental data we found the accurate dynamic behavior of the system.

  • The feasibility study on the oil-free turbocharger supported by air foil bearings is investigated. Using the perturbation method, dynamic characteristics of air foil bearings are calculated based on the static equilibrium position of a turbocharger rotor is predicted. With collaboration of calculated stiffness and damping of foil bearing, rotordynamic analysis is performed using the finite element method. The effects of bump compliance and bearing clearance on rotordynamic characteristics of the oil-free turbocharger such as the critical speeds, eccentricity ratio, vibration amplitude and stability are investigated.

  • The optical storage device has recently experienced significant improvement, especially for the aspects of high capacity and fast transfer rate. However, it is necessary to study a new shape of air bearing surface for the rotary type actuator because the optical storage device has the lower access time than that of HDD (Hard Disk Drives). In this study, we proposed the air bearing shape by using SA (Simulated Annealing) algorithm which is very effective to achieve the global optimum instead of many local optimums. The objective of optimization is to minimize the deviation in flying height from a target value 100nm. In addition, the pitch and roll angle should be maintained within the operation limits.

  • In this study, we measured cylindricity and Runout of the air bearing spindle, and tested PCB(printed circuit boards) drilling with 0.4mm micro drill at 90,000rpm and 110,000rpm in order to obtain drilling hole error. Results are as follows; The air bearing spindle's Runout was not so high within $10\mu{m}$ from 20,000rpm to 80,000rpm but it grew after 80,000rpm. Drilling hole size error was 9% at 80,000rpm and 12% at 110,000rpm because of spindle's Run out. Drilled hole shape falsified more 110,000rpm than 90,000rpm.

  • Local magnetic properties and magnetization distributions on the air-bearing surface of a thin-film magnetic head have been studied by using scanning magneto-optical Kerr microscopy. The examined head was a merged MR read/inductive writing head with a write gap equal to 0.3 $\mu m$. Sizes of top and bottom pole-tips on the air-bearing surface of the writing head were equal to $3\mu m\times3\mu m$ and $3\mu m\times30\mu m$, respectively, The measured magnetic characteristics on the head air-bearing surface were found to be very sensitive to the head design. In particular, magnetization distributions were discovered to have asymmetrical shape. Maximum magnitudes of the magnetization were located near the shorten pole-tip. So, it was experimentally proved that more magnetic flux emanates just from this part of the air-bearing head surface.

  • The influence of aerated oil on a high-speed proceeding bearing is examined by using the classical thermohydrodynamic lubrication theory coupled with analytical models for viscosity and density of air-oil mixture in fluid-film bearing including the live surface tension of aerated oil. Convection to the walls and mixing with supply oil and re-circulating oil are considered. The considered parameters for the study of bubbly lubrication are oil aeration level, air bubble size and shaft speed. The results show that, if the live surface tension is considered, the effect of air bubbles on the bearing load capacity is reduced due to temperature engagement comparing with that under the condition of a constant surface tension.

  • The limiting load capacity of air foil thrust bearings at extremely high operating speeds is theoretically investigated. The limiting load capacity of a sector is shown to increase as the angular extent ${\beta}$ and the inlet film thickness $h_1$ of the bearing increase, while it decreases with an increase in the ramp ratio b and the compliance ${\alpha}$ of the bearing. But it is found that the angular extent of the bearing is not related to the total limiting load capacity of the $360^{\circ}$ thrust bearing.

  • Rapid increase of Refrigeration and Air conditioning system in modem industries brings attention to the urgency of core technology development in the area. This paper presents theoretical investigation of the lubrication characteristics of rotary compressor for refrigeration and air conditioning. In order to analyze the lubrication characteristics of the main & sub bearing of rotary compressor, the bearing force and locus of shaft center are analyzed by the dynamic analysis of rotary compressor and numerical analysis of Reynolds equation as the operating condition is changed in various ways. In this paper, we used the Runge-Kutta method for the dynamic analysis of rotary compressor and the SOR (Successive OverRelaxation) method for the numerical analysis of Reynolds equation. The result shows that the operating condition of sub bearing is severer than that of main bearing, and eccentricity ratio grows as the bearing force increases. It is believed that the result can be applied to the design of alternative refrigerant rotary compressor.

  • Recently the requirement of long-term mobile energy source for mobile robot or small-sized unmanned vehicle is highly increased, and the micro turbine generator(MTG) which is known to have high energy and power density is under development. MTG is designed to have air foil bearing and high speed rotor of which operating speed is 400,000rpm. In the development stage of high speed rotor and bearing, stability analysis for the full operational speed range is essential and the dynamic coefficients such as stiffness and damping coefficients of bearing depending on the rotational speed are required for that. Although perturbation method is usually used to identify the dynamic coefficients, it's not easy to give the perturbation to the high speed rotating rotor. In this study, we present the dynamic coefficients measurement system for air foil bearing which consists of electromagnets, gap sensors, high speed motor and controller. This measurement system can exert the sine sweep force to the rotor-bearing, measure the displacement of rotor and get FRF(Frequency response function) of rotor-bearing. The least square estimation method is applied to identify the dynamic coefficients of bearing from the measured frequency response at the different rpm and the identified dynamic coefficients for the wide rotational speed range are presented.
