Analysis on the effect of the opening of high speed rail way on the change in the air passenger's demand - Focused on Seoul and Jeju line - (고속철도 개통이 항공여객 수요변화에 미치는 영향 분석 - 서울-제주간 노선을 중심으로 -)

  • Competition between air transportation and railways has grown fiercer in major countries around the world with the rise of high-speed railways. In South Korea, air passenger travel has been rapidly decreasing since the initial launch of the Seoul-Pusan KTX line in 2004 and second opening that followed in 2010. Further expansion of the high-speed railway is expected. At present, research efforts to verify the validity of constructing an underwater express railway tunnel between Ho-nam and Jeju Island are taking place. Considering the possible high speed railway connection between Seoul and Jeju Island, this thesis has analyzed the choice behavior of existing passengers of the major and low-cost carriers. For this, Stated Preference (SP) research has been performed for three variables, including fare, travel time and the number of runs, to estimate the substitution rate of each of the three variables. Binomial Logit Model has been estimated with the obtained data. The estimation of the model has found that airline passengers of major and low-cost carriers are willing to pay approximately 7,200 KRW and 5,000 KRW, respectively, to reduce travel time by one hour. If the number of runs in one day increases, it has been estimated that the passengers are willing to pay additional fares of about 390 KRW and 30 KRW, respectively. On the other hand, the substitution rate between the number of runs and the travel time was found to be somewhat insignificant. If the construction of the Seoul-Jeju line progresses in the future, this study could be used as preliminary data for determining fares, travel time and the number of runs.

  • The supply chain of the airline industry includes multiple airline companies, travel agencies and customers. Various air fares are offered by travel agencies. The travel agencies grant deposit to the airline company in advance and preoccupy seats with deep discount, which called group-discount-ticket. The group-discount-ticket offers the lowest air fare but it does not base on real demand. So the information flow generated by group-discount-ticket can cause the information distortion in airline supply chain. This study analyzes the bullwhip effect in the airline industry. A mathematical model is formulated and managerial suggestions is provided.

  • The purpose of this study is to grasp position of Sachon airport-local airport-especially the characteristics of it's air passengers, the distribution of passengers hinterland on their purposes of the travel and on the day of the week, and the spatial structure of hinterland The results is as follows The distribution of the hinterland on the purposes of a passenger's travel shows the hunterland of friend and acquauntance visit is wider than that of business, And the middle level of its size is sightseeing The hinterland of commuting includes only Chinju, so the range of passengers' social activities is wider than that of passenger' economic activities In the distribution of the hunterland on the day of the week, the distnbution of the weekday is wider than that of the holidays, but the passenger travel to Chinju is concentrated on the holidays. As rnentioned adove, the hinterland centenng around Sachon airport is Chinju sity field. Tongyoung. Sachon and Koje city field, Kwangyang city and Namhae, Sanchong, Kosung, Hadong, Uiryoung county field. It is a little different result from the area of reverse commuting of the elementray, middle and high school Leachers living in Chinju That's because air passenger travel mainly occurs in industrial and sighrseeing cities

Estimation of Air Travel Demand Models and Elasticities for Jeju-Mainland Domestic Routes (제주-내륙 간 국내선 항공여객수요모형 및 탄력성의 추정)

  • Jeju-Mainland demand for air passenger is variated by the season because most of the demands stem from the leisure travel. This research is to estimate the econometrics demand models(A simple time series model and the partial adjustment model) and elasticities of each models for the Jeju-Mainland domestic routes air travel market using the time series aggregate data between the year 1996 and 2005. As the result of estimating, income elasticity was evaluated to be elastic(1.55) and fare elasticity was inelastic(-0.49${\sim}$-0.59) for A simple time series models. In the partial adjustment model's case, income elasticity was evaluated to be inelastic(0.51) in short-run whereas it was evaluated to be elastic(1.88) in long-run. Fare elasticity was evaluated to be inelastic in short-run(high-demand season: -0.13, slack season: -0.20) and long-run(high-demand season: -0.48, slack season: -0.72).

  • What was once known as common courtesy is rapidly disappearing in the air travel industry, and the violent behavior known as air rage is a constant threat. Once sought after by other industries for advice because of its expertise in customer service, the air travel industry has now slipped to the lowest rungs of companies with unhappy customers. As airlines cut corners in order to avoid bankruptcy, passengers' patience is tested by the stress of flight delays, crowded airports and close packed seating on airplanes. This article examines the situation, strategies used by passengers and ways the airline industry might better inspire courteous behavior in passengers. A cultural expectation of entitlement and competitiveness for limited resources has led to a breakdown in civilized behavior throughout society, both in the United States and internationally. Air travelers faced with rude and intrusive behavior from others on the flight are beginning to find their own ways of coping, such as high quality headphones to block offensive noises, and mechanical devices to keep the seat in front from reclining to the point where it hits their knees. The most potentially effective remedies will come from airlines that enlist cooperation by offering effective passenger education and possibly even incentives. Acceptable airline behaviors need to be plainly defined and stressed for passengers, both before boarding and onboard. In this paper, some methods are suggested to motivate passengers and to inspire courteous behavior.

The Impact of Air Quality on Traveling Time by Transportation Mode (대기오염 수준이 교통수단별 통행시간에 미치는 영향 분석)

  • This paper examines the effects of ambient air pollution by ozone and particulate matter on traveling by mode of transport. We estimate the SUR model of travel time by different modes of transportation using individual level data of travel diaries. We find that, as air pollution levels rises, traveling by privately-owned vehicles increases but traveling by bus decreases. Our results also show that, when an air quality alert is issued, bus traveling increases in an effort to reduce pollution levels, but traveling by own car does not change and traveling by train declines. This suggests that alert programs may not be highly effective in reducing air pollution emissions from vehicles because voluntary switching to public transportation induced by air quality alerts is outweighed by individual effort of avoiding exposure to pollution.

  • As can be seen by the fact that 96% of foreign visitors to Korea travel by air, governments across Asia are aware of the importance civil aviation has in a country's economical developlment, and are fiercely investing in infrastructure and systems which could help set the ground for a hub strategy, catching the profits generated from air travel. In the case of Incheon Internation Airport (IIA), Chinese passengers have outnumbered Japanese passengers using IIA. Considering the potential growth of the Chinese air transport market, there is the growing need for thorough research regarding Chinese passengers. Surveys for the following study were distributed between September 2015 and October 2015, which includes Chinese holidays. Surveys were distributed to Chinese transfer passengers, with questions related to airport service and facility usage.

  • This study is focused on the problem of seat allocation for group travel demand in airlines. We first explain the characteristic of group demand and its seat allocation process. The group demand in air travel markets can be classified into two types : incentive and package groups. Allocating seats for group demand depends on the types of group demand and the relationship between airlines and travel agents. In this paper we concentrate on the package group demand and develop an optimization model for seat allocation on the demand to maximize the total revenue. With some assumptions on the demand distribution and the linear approximation technique, we develop a mixed IP model for solving our problem optimally. From the computational experiments, we can find our optimization model can be applied well for real-world application.

  • The rapid spread of Internet has significant effects on changes in the distribution channel. The direct transaction between manufacturer and consumer could create the threats of dis-intermediation to existing channel members as middlemen. Air-ticket market also has changed in Internet marketing channel era. This study is mainly concerned with understanding the reaction of travel agency to Internet marketing channel. The objectives of this study is to propose and test the model that the perceived threats of dis-intermediation affect the reactions of travel agency: increasing channel competence, decreasing concentration, and deriving diversification. The model basically adopted the arguments of intertype competition, considering the arguments of re- intermediation in order to explain the reaction of using Internet. The result of survey from 158 travel agencies supported most of hypotheses. All the hypotheses are accepted except the relationship between threats of dis-intermediation and increasing channel competence.
